6 2013 DRIVERS EDUCATION PROGRAM COORDINATOR Tony Cherico Driver s Education is offered to students in an effort to help them make good driving decisions. The purpose of the course is not to teach students to drive, but to teach them to drive safely. It is not the purpose of the course to help students pass the written driver s test. Every effort is made to coordinate the classroom work so it can be applied in the car during driving sessions. COST OF THE CLASS: The fee for the course is $225 and check made payable to BHS. Payment must be made in the north or south office at Bentonville High School. The fee is used to buy supplies, gas for the car, car rental fees, and salaries for personnel teaching the course. Payment in full must be made when registering and you must show a current license or permit. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE COURSE: 1. Must be at least 14 years of age and must have LICENSE/PERMIT before driving. Students must have a 2.0 GPA to be eligible to get a permit and to take this course. Students can not complete this course without a learner s permit/driver s license and money for the course will be forfeited. 2. Students will complete 10 hours of classroom, observation and driving time. 3. Students must provide working materials such as paper and pencil. 4. All time missed due to absences must be made up before certification will be given. 5. Students must meet all requirements of the course in order to receive a certificate for the use of insurance discounts. 6. Plan a 1000-mile trip and estimate all expenses. 7. Prepare a report using the internet. RESPONSIBILITY OF THE PARENTS: 1. Help reinforce the information we give by allowing your personal car to be used for driving practice when you are with your child. 2. If your son/daughter is asked to leave class because of a discipline problem, he/she will not be allowed to go back to class until you take him/her back and talk to the instructor. A second discipline problem will result in dismissal from the class. NO REFUND WILL BE GIVEN. 3. Students are reminded, while they are on the school campus, they are under the jurisdiction of the school and subject to its rules and regulations. Driver s Education is a one-week, ten-hour course. Two 5 day sessions will be held: Course 1: Tuesday, June 4 th through Saturday, June 8th. Course 2: Monday, June 17 th through Friday, June 21 st. Morning classes will meet from 8:30-9:00 with driving times from either 9:00-10:30 or 10:30-12:00. Afternoon classes will meet from 12:30-1:00 with driving times from either 1:00-2:30 or 2:30-4:00. Class size will be limited to four students per instructor. *Note: All sessions will meet in the morning for the Final Day of Class. There will be no class in the afternoon on the Final Day.* Sign-ups for each week of class will be on a first come first serve basis. Classroom instruction will take place at the high school. Room assignment will be posted on the door of North Building first day of class. Questions may be directed to: Tony Cherico at tcherico@bentonvillek12.org
