1 Woolwine Elementary School April 2016 Principal s Message April is Here and SOL Time is Near It s the final count down and we are looking forward to a strong finish to this school year. We are eager for our students to show their academic success on the statewide Standards Of Learning (SOL) assessments. Students in grades 3-7 will begin SOL testing the last week of April. Please refer to the testing schedule included in this newsletter. We appreciate your support of your student s academic success. Listed below are ways you can help your student be successful on the upcoming SOL tests. Test Preparation: Have your student at school each day on time; classes still have a great deal of material to cover and review. Avoid unnecessary doctor appointments, etc. from now until the end of testing. Test Days: Begin establishing a routine now for your student Get to bed on time and be well rested Eat a nutritious breakfast at home or here at school Be Confident! 2 It was a Seusstacular time as the PreK class participated in Read Across America throughout the week of February 29 th March 4 th. During this week, we were honored to hear 15 volunteers read a variety of books including some by Dr. Seuss. Wednesday, March 2 nd was the official birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, an American writer and illustrator best known for authoring popular children's books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. In honor of what would have been Dr. Seuss 112 th Birthday, Mrs. Donna Harbour, dressed as The Cat in the Hat and Tayman and Bryson Bullins dressed as Thing 1 and Thing 2. It was also a special honor to have a former English teacher, Mrs. Phyllis Eastridge, share some stories and songs with the PreK class. All enjoyed each lesson in a spectacular fun-filled manner! News from the Art Room April is an important month for our Woolwine Elementary students! We are very excited about our artwork that will be displayed for the upcoming Art Extravaganza. We will have our one day art exhibit on Tuesday, April 19th. You may visit anytime between 6:00 7:30 p.m. A galley walk will be held and the fifth grade band and chorus will perform. We will have art in the hallways as well as in the art room and cafeteria. Coming back by popular demand will be the Art Treasure Hunt. All finished clue sheets will go into a basket and one lucky winner will receive a gift bag full of art supplies! An artist reception area in the cafeteria will offer lemonade and cookies. 2 I am looking forward to a great evening!

3 First Grade News First grade has been very busy learning about some of America s famous leaders and the contributions they have made to our society. We have been learning about the lives of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington Carver. Students have worked hard to learn how to count money, and they have been making their own purchases in our classroom store. Students are now learning to tell time! 4 Band News Spring Concerts 5 th Grade Tuesday, April 19 The Spring Fine Arts Showcase will begin at 6:30pm in the WES cafeteria with a performance by the 5 th grade band students. We will stay after school for an extra rehearsal. Pizza and a movie will be provided. I will send home a permission slip for students to stay after school. 6 th /7 th Grade Thursday, May 5 PCHS Auditorium at 6:30pm. We will have a full rehearsal after school that day at PCHS to prepare for the concert. Pizza is provided for dinner. Permission slips will be sent home. Carowinds The 7 th grade will be performing at the Carowinds Music Festival on Saturday, April 23. This is an exciting time for the students as they will perform for judges and receive feedback to help them grow as musicians. We will have a full rehearsal with those going on the trip afterschool on Wednesday, April 20 from 3:30-5pm in the PCHS band room. Parents, there will be a short meeting about the trip in the band room when you pick your child up. This rehearsal is very important for each student going to Carowinds. Please make every effort to attend. I have already spoken to all of the coaches who have practices that afternoon. They are aware that band students will be late to practice so they can participate in this rehearsal. Summer Band Camp All students currently in band are encouraged to attend summer band camp this year! It will be held at PCHS in the band room the week of June (the week after 4H camp). Mr. Joseph Whitt (PCHS band director) and several of the high school band members will be assisting with the camp this year! This camp offers a chance for students who wish to grow on an individual and collective musical level. Camp is FREE and transportation will be provided from WES to PCHS! I will be sending home registration forms before SOLs start. 7 Sixth Grade Travels to Richmond and Williamsburg On March 22, the sixth graders got an early start to their day traveling to Richmond. We left Woolwine at 6:00 and arrived in Richmond around 11:00 am. There we were given a tour of our state Capitol, and we participated in a House program where we learned how a bill is presented and voted on. After the Capitol tour, we travelled to the Science Museum, where we had lunch and watched an IMAX movie on the Forces of Nature. Before leaving Richmond, we toured the Confederate Museum and the White House of the Confederacy. We had a very interesting program about medical practices during the Civil War. Afterwards, we traveled to Williamsburg for dinner and some much needed rest. On Wednesday we spent the entire day in Colonial Williamsburg. The weather was perfect. Our tour included such places as the Capitol, the Blacksmith, the Tinsmith, the Wigmaker, the Jail, the Silversmith, the Milliner, and the Magazine. Students especially enjoyed learning about and playing games that children played during this time period. We had two busy, but very enjoyable days. Our sixth graders represented Woolwine Elementary well. Touring the state Capitol in Richmond. Enjoying a beautiful day in Williamsburg.
