3 CHINESE SUMMER PROGRAMS Junior Chinese Summer Camp (Day Camp) Suitable for: non-native Chinese-speaking students aged 5-11 Program Date: Session I: June 27-July 8; Session II: July 11-July 22 Location: YK PAO School Primary Division Having running for 8 years, the Junior Chinese Camp at YK Pao School is the ideal program for non-native Chinese-speaking children to learn Chinese in an enjoyable environment and gain a taste of Chinese culture while living in Shanghai. We offer students a Chinese immersion environment, along with quality teaching, streamed learning, and interactive learning with local Chinese students. Besides, it also provides cultural explorations, extensions programs and home-stay opportunities. Residential Chinese Summer Camp -Age Suitable for: non-native Chinese-speaking students aged years old Program Date: July 4-July 15 Location: YK PAO School Secondary Division YK Pao School is the only Chinese school in Shanghai offering boarding program in summer. It is an ideal program for students to get exposure and immersion in Chinese culture, in which offers well-balanced courses that encourages learning through activities including drama and music. Students will have daily sharing with local students, along with exciting cultural field trips. The Residential Chinese Summer Camp is at YK Pao School Secondary Division in Song Jiang Campus.

You are all amazing! * This schedule is subject to change Language Immersion Your child will learn Chinese in an immersion setting under the guidance of YKP s own highly experienced teachers. No prior Chinese language skills are necessary to participate in this camp, but all participants must be at least 5 years old at the start of camp. We make every attempt to create balanced classes to ensure that every child gets the most out of his or her experience. Curriculum During each two-week session, children will experience Chinese Language, Chinese Culture, Calligraphy, Pottery, Drama, Chinese folk music, Sports with local students, Kong Fu, Dancing, Swimming, Culture excursion. Language acquisition will come naturally to your child as a result of participating in these fun and interactive activities. Teacher will speak in Chinese while using visual aids and body gestures to help children feel comfortable in the new language.

Exercises will include listening, speaking, reading, and writing of Chinese. The method of study is to learn Chinese naturally and happily in devised situations. Two Chinese classes are designed to focus upon Chinese language and culture in the afternoon in the form of activities such as games, drama, calligraphy, singing, performance, visits in the community off campus, ask for directions, shopping, and interviews. Teachers and Teaching Assistants The instructors are all experienced Chinese teachers from YK Pao School Secondary Division, which guarantees high quality teaching and instruction. The Chinese language coordinator will also attend Chinese activity classes. 7 Curriculum Description Junior Chinese Summer Camp Academic Goals: (1) Reading and writing Chinese characters To cultivate a strong interest in learning Chinese characters To recognize about 100 common Chinese characters, in which about 20 Chinese characters can be written (2) Reading To read texts accurately in Putonghua To understand the meanings of new vocabulary by through dictionaries and accumulated experiences (3) Writing To pay close attention to surrounding objects To enjoy expressing in written form To increase self-confidence in composition To be willing to read one s own composition to others and share the enjoyment of writing To be able to record what one sees and hears, feelings, or imagination in different ways, and to express fun, interesting, impressive and touching content. Curriculum materials: Using <Chinese for Children> and Shanghai local teaching materials as major teaching materials, we will add or edit materials according to students language levels and teach them to ensure the best results. Residential Chinese Summer Camp Academic goals: The academic goals of YK Pao Residential Chinese Summer Camp are to enhance each student s conversational skills in Chinese, as well as develop their reading and writing ability of Chinese characters. The structure of the Residential Camp is specifically designed to enhance the Chinese language proficiency of our students through academic class time, role play in drama, enactment of realistic situational scenarios, and engagement with native speakers in the community. Staff will prepare and assign customized academic materials for class, including vocabulary lists, and appropriately leveled reading materials. Textbooks: Our teachers will utilize textbooks specially designed for the students who attends our summer program, drawing the essence from a variety of Chinese teaching materials.

8 Cultural Excursions During The camp, students will have an exceptional chance to explore the unique Chinese cultural and historical places in vicinity, with fun tasks and challenges designed ahead, to help students learn beyond classroom. 11 Registration Process 1) Application Download the Application Form from our website at or request it from Summer Camp Office. Fill in the form and scanned, ed to 2) Registration A Payment Notice will be issued by . Please register in accordance with the date on it. Registration will be confirmed once the payment has been received. Payment can be made by bank transfer, details of which can be found in the Payment Notice. Be sure to include your child s name and Summer Camp on the transfer statement. A place will be reserved for your child after the fee has been received. The place will be released if full payment is not received by the date on the Payment Notice. 3) Assessment When you have done the registration, you will receive s regarding Student Assessment Test, school bus routes and choice of Enrichment Programs. 12 Frequently Asked Questions I Junior Chinese Summer Camp Are there any other classes apart from Chinese lessons? Junior Chinese Camp We believe in activity-based learning. In addition to Chinese language lessons, students will attend classes such as sports, traditional Chinese hand crafts, music and dance, and drama, all taught in Chinese. How does the school cater for different standards of Chinese? Classes are streamed based on language level and age. What types of students is the Summer Program suitable for? The program is designed for students aged 5-11 who are non-native Chinese speakers. Do students study together with Chinese students? Due to language considerations, students will study Chinese with other non-native Chinese-speaking students. However there are opportunities to interact with Chinese students during activities, including sports, etc. Accommodation 1) Families may make their own arrangements for accommodation or we can recommend serviced apartments with group rate near school. The information will be sent to you upon request after you successfully made the registration. 2) Home-stay: A small number of host family placements are available for students aged 9-11 years old with intermediate level of Chinese. Host families are carefully-vetted by YK Pao School. This is the best option for making rapid progress in Chinese as well as getting an insight into Chinese life. Placements are limited, so please contact our office as early as possible if you wish to book a place. School Bus Service We offer a bus service for students staying within a 10km radius of the School. The bus picks up students at the gate of the residential complex or outside the hotel in which they stay and drops them off at school. The school reserves the right to cancel this service in the unlikely event that there are not enough applicants Visa Procedure We suggest applicants apply for an L-type (tourist) visa through their local Chinese embassy/consulate. Please apply for the visa well in advance. Visas typically take 4-5 days to issue, but please allow sufficient time in the event that delays should occur. We can provide an Invitation Letter for visa application purposes. The student s passport name, date of birth and passport number will be required for processing.

13 Frequently Asked Questions II Residential Chinese Summer Camp How does the school cater for different standards of Chinese? Classes are streamed based on language level and age. Before we place students in appropriate class, assessment will be made accordingly. What s the class size and teacher/student Ratio? No more than 16 students in one class, the teacher/student ratio is around 1:5. Where are classes held? All classes are held on campus at YK Pao School Secondary Division which boasts a wide range of equipment and facilities, such as a library, a cafeteria, an indoor swimming pool, outdoor basketball courts, a soccer pitch, and a gym with the capability for basketball, volleyball, badminton and table tennis. Classes will be fun and exciting, and are designed to help students learn Chinese through engaging, language-oriented activities. Excursions will be in the cultural places in Shanghai. How about catering? We will provide whole day meal including breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks in each morning and afternoon. Meals served by an international catering company experienced in providing meals for international students. Our food is healthy, well-balanced and meets the nutritional standards for children and youth. How about the health and safety? Our campus employs a 24-hour security team that maintains the school gates and monitors all of the surrounding buildings. All dormitories have security cameras in the communal areas only, and in the case of emergency, all dormitories have multiple exit points. YK Pao School campus is proud of its Wellness Center, which provides for general medical needs of our 400 plus student body during the regular school year. The Wellness Center will be staffed with certified medical professionals to ensure proper medical care is provided 24 hours a day for the duration of camp. If the child become ill, we will not contact you for minor cuts, bruises and scrapes. In the event of a medical situation of a more serious nature that may require hospital care, a full-facility hospital is within ten minutes of the campus, fully-staffed and equipped to meet any medical need. What about administering medication? Our wellness Center is fully staffed. However, our capability for administering medication is limited to easily administered medication, such as over the counter drugs and prescription medicine. We are not capable of providing medical care or treatment beyond this level. What kind of documents shall we prepare for visa? Case may differ, so please refer to your local Chinese embassy/consulate, and make sure the period of stay is valid during the camp.

14 Frequently Asked Questions III Residential Chinese Summer Camp How can I best prepare my Child for camp? The best preparation for camp is a positive family attitude. 1. Clearly discuss with your children what they should expect at camp 2. Review the schedule with your child so they know what to expect 3. Discuss the excitement of meeting new friends and getting to know their awesome teacher. If this is your child s first time to camp, encourage them to bring a friend with them to give them a greater sense of security. Let your children know that you will miss them, but resist the urge to be too sentimental. Your confidence and optimism will rub off on your camper. What should campers pack for camp? And what shouldn t students bring to camp? Student should come to camp with a standard set of toiletries, a pair of sandals, towel(s), an extra pair of shoes, shorts, underwear, comfortable pants and shirts, a swim suit, writing implements such as a pen and pencil, and a water bottle. The following items should be left home, primarily for security reasons: cell phones, jewelry or valuables, video games, electronic devices. Students should not bring the cellphone to camp, the reason is not only the security risk, but also international wireless plans are quite costly. Besides, we want to ensure that students are not on cell phones in the middle of the night when they should be sleeping. What about my child s roommates? The allocation of rooms will be completed closer to the start of the camp. In an effort to develop both Chinese and English language skills and learning about each other s culture, where possible, your child will be allocated a room with students from each of the two residential language programs, English and Chinese. The aim of this allocation is to enable language and cultural acquisition to continue outside of the academic classroom as well as developing friendships and social connections that will continue once the camp is finished. What are evenings like in the dorm? During the camp, the dormitory will be fully-staffed for safety and security. Each house will have Dorm Parents responsible for the children after the academic day, and they will oversee and supervise the residential evening program. In addition, each dorm, or each floor in some instances, has communal areas where children can relax, play cards or board games and get to know one another. What if my child gets homesick? It is natural for some students to miss home, particularly if this is their first experience being away from home. Our residential coordinator and all staff, including dorm parents and teachers, are prepared to work with students who may experience homesickness. Of course, campers will be very busy and there will be little time to spend worrying about being away from home. Should Parents call their child? Since the camp is only two weeks long, we ask that parents do not attempt to call their child. However, in the case of an emergency, a staff number will be provided, but for emergencies only.
