4 LEARN FROM A CUSTOMIZED CURRICULUM We have designed a curriculum to challenge your mind and to build your skills in English, whether you come to the U.S. as a beginning, intermediate, or advanced speaker. Our dedicated teachers will tailor this curriculum to your needs to help you achieve your goals for growth in English language proficiency. READING You will delve into the lives of great American authors as they remember stories from their own childhoods. This window on American culture through literature will enrich your understanding of current films and television produced in the U.S. WRITING Travel creates a perfect reason to write. Our writing class will inspire you with ideas for your own travel journal as you practice narrative and descriptive essay styles at your level of English. LISTENING A selection of recent feature films will give you a rich listening comprehension experience. You will practice listening with intent as you watch scenes of people on cross-cultural journeys and discuss themes from the films with your classmates.

5 ENGAGE IN A CAPSTONE PROJECT In the Intensive ESL Program, you will work with a group of classmates to prepare a presentation about your culture to share with the Northwest University community. This is your chance to teach your U.S. campus hosts about your culture, history, and values. SHARE YOUR TALENTS Do you love to dance? Sing? Play an instrument? Tell jokes? Organize skits with your classmates? You can share these talents with your friends and teachers in the end-of-program talent show! Proyecta 100,000 students explained the history of MexicoU.S. relations in November 2014 and demonstrated posada traditions in December 2014.

6 LEARN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM Field trips around Seattle form an integral part of the Exchange experience. Northwest University students and teachers serve as Culture Guides for these activities. From the birds-eye view at the top of the Space Needle to hands-on interaction with exhibits at the Seattle Aquarium and Pacific Science Center, you will have plenty of chances to use new vocabulary, to ask good questions, and to engage with the Pacific Northwest region. 7 PREPARE FOR AN ADVENTURE Follow these steps to get ready for your trip to the U.S. ENTRY DOCUMENTS To be able to enter the U.S., you will need to register for ESTA, an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). If you do not qualify for ESTA, then you will need to apply for a B1-B2 Visa for entry to the U.S. Visit these official websites to get started on the ESTA process: HEALTH INSURANCE AIRLINE TICKETS You will need to purchase airfare from Seoul to Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SeaTac), arriving on July 14. AIRPORT ARRIVAL You will need to purchase travel insurance for any medical expenses during your time in the U.S. You must provide Northwest University with a copy of your travel insurance information. When you arrive at SeaTac airport on July 14, expect to spend about 45 minutes to one hour passing through the customs and immigration process. Northwest University staff will come to meet you at the airport baggage claim after you pass through customs. Watch for the Northwest University sign to meet your group for the bus ride to campus. ORIENTATION PASSPORT You must have a valid, current passport to enter the U.S. You must provide Northwest University with a copy of the information page at the front of your passport. When you arrive, we will help you get settled into campus and community life at Northwest University. We will explain a few important rules you should know for example, smoking and alcohol are not allowed on campus. Also, we will help you find your way around so you can have a safe and enjoyable stay in the Kirkland neighborhood.

8 EXPECT A BUSY SCHEDULE Each day of your Seattle Exchange Short Term Program will be packed with ESL classes, activities, and field trips. We have scheduled regular meal times and evening quiet hours to be sure you will have plenty of energy for each new day. 9 ENJOY DELICIOUS MEALS Northwest University s campus cafeteria called "The Caf will give you lots of fresh, healthy options. From basics like rice, vegetables, and fish to special items like kimchi, we will try to help you feel at home. You can order a hamburger cooked just the way you like it, sample different kinds of pizza, or try hot dishes from around the world. At every meal, you can build a salad, make yourself a sandwich, or cook your own hot meal from fresh ingredients. A choice of fruit, desserts, ice cream, and hot or cold beverages will complete your meal. A gluten-free section is always available for special dietary needs. A selection of hot entrees will be ready for you at every meal. Still hungry? Go back for seconds! At this meal station, you can cook for yourself with fresh ingredients. Salad! Pizza! French fries! So many choices.

10 SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Trying new foods is an important part of a cross-cultural experience. At the Caf, you will get to try something new at each meal and pick what you like best.
