SHERIDAN COLLEGE Founded in 1967, Sheridan has grown from a small community college of 400 students to a dynamic and innovative institution with 11,520 full-time students. It is nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in business, visual design, digital technologies and community services. 3 THE ESL PROGRAM Sheridan College s English as a Second Language (ESL) Program offers a wide range of levels to help international students and other non-native English speakers improve their English and learn more about Canadian education, business and culture. Your English will benefit from a full immersion in the English language in a challenging and stimulating environment with experienced ESL teachers. Sheridan offers eight levels of instruction which offer eight-week courses in: Speaking and listening Reading and writing Grammar Pronunciation Living, studying and working in an English speaking environment is also stressed. Successful completion of the final level, English for Academic Purposes (EAP), allows students to enter one of Sheridan s postsecondary/post-graduate programs without further language testing. The Sheridan website has a full list of these programs: IN THE CLASSROOM A typical instructor at Sheridan is a native English speaker with college teaching experience in Canada and abroad, and dedication to the field of teaching ESL. Our success relies as much on the high motivation level of our students as it does on the skills of experienced teachers. Students at Sheridan share a common need education, business or travel which makes it important to actually speak the language rather than just studying English to pass tests. PROGRAM LENGTH The program length varies. Each level is eight weeks long. It may take anywhere between eight weeks to two years to complete your program, depending upon the level of your English skills when you enrol. PROGRAM FORMAT Classes meet 25 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. START DATES Classes start every eight weeks in early January, March, May, July, September and late October. Check the Sheridan ESL website for exact start dates: AVERAGE ENROLMENT 140 students (average) per term. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Students must be at least 17 years old and have some basic knowledge of English. FEES Application fee: $65 Eight-week course: $2,300 (includes tuition,health insurance, materials, books and computer fee) Fees are based on 2002 figures. FACILITIES ESL students have access to all of the resources of Sheridan including the libraries, language and computer laboratories, and residence.

A multimedia lab, with free access to the Internet, is available to all of our students. ESL teachers staff our after-school lab to help you with your studies. Occasional excursions to scenic and famous sites such as Toronto and Niagara Falls are also available. ASSISTANCE Sheridan s International Services office offers assistance to students in matters of housing, health, immigration, travel, sightseeing and further study once English is mastered.
