2 About Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) Sun Yat-sen University is ranked among the Top 10 Chinese universities and is renowned as being No. 1 in southern China. It is a comprehensive multidisciplinary university with academic interests in humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, medical sciences and engineering. SYSU has about 55,000 students studying on four campuses (three in Guangzhou, one in Zhuhai) and nearly 14,000 faculty and staff recruited in 40 schools, 5 substantial departments and 8 affiliated hospitals. There are many advanced laboratory facilities and scientific research bases provided by Sun Yat-sen University, including 4 key state-funded labs, 2 specialized labs, 3 research centers, 4 state-province joint engineering labs, 10 key labs of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and 6 research bases for the humanities and social sciences of MOE. SYSU also has very close relationships with many top universities in the world to set forward the programs regarding joint-research, students and faculties exchange and various other co-operations.

3 SIS SIS is located in Zhuhai where the Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) opened its largest campus in Since then, SYSU Zhuhai has become the most international campus because of its schools that work on various academic exchange and joint research programs with foreign universities as well as the universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Since its foundation in 2005, SIS has aimed to develop highly qualified foreign language programs and area studies courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. With a special emphasis on international faculty, SIS now has 24 foreign language instructors employed from different nations like the U.S., the U.K., Spain, Jordan, Egypt, South Korea, Russia, and Portugal, and has created the largest team of international faculty among the six schools at the campus. The SIS foreign language instructors are all the holders of a master degree in language education, art & history, political science and business. The language courses offered by SIS cover English, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Arabic, German, French, Japanese, and Portuguese studies. These courses are designed to allow the SIS students to improve their foreign language proficiency and more importantly gain better understanding of the nature of human languages and cultures. The BA program is a four-year undergraduate program with an enrollment of about 2000 students for each year. It is developed to give students an opportunity to specialize in English and other foreign languages in conjunction with translation, business, management, and cultural studies. Students are trained to be able to deal with cross cultural communication and develop skills of problem solving in intercultural settings. With a special focus on high-quality research and teaching in language-based disciplines, SIS also offers a master s program with a wide range of research courses and lectures on the study of languages, translation, and cultures. About the School of International Studies (SIS)

4 COURSES & OVERVIEW OF SIS UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM Program Overview The SIS English Language Instructor Program is a 10-month full time training program that incorporates set courses of English language and culture. The program is aimed to systematically improve the skills of listening, writing, reading and speaking English for the SIS undergraduate students, develop personal writing skills of the SIS master students in academic English, and help the students of Huanan Program with IELTS, TOEFL and SAT preparation. -Program Courses Courses of SIS Undergraduate Program English Writing I - Course Description: English Writing I is the first of a series of English writing courses offered to Second-Year students enrolled at the School of International Studies at Sun Yat-sen University. This course aims to enhance students proficiency level in English, to familiarize them with the common practices and approaches to writing in English at the college level, and to create for students the appropriate linguistic environment to facilitate communication and self-expression in English. English Writing II - Course Description This course is a continuation of English Writing I. Students writing skills in paragraph development and essay writing will be further enhanced. An important part of the course is to prepare students for the Test of English for Majors (Level 4) Exam. The course will equip students with various rhetorical strategies in writing, in addition to further improving their sentence and vocabulary skills. Another important component of the course will be to show students how to conduct independent research and write up a research paper. Students will learn to narrow down topics, develop their own thesis, gather information from different sources, evaluate the relevance and reliability of source materials, and use citations and references as appropriate. English Writing III - Course Description This is the third of a series of English writing courses offered to Third-Year students enrolled at the School of International Studies at Sun Yat-sen University. This course continues to enhance students knowledge of the practices in written academic discourse and aims to further develop students ability in writing

5 about a variety of topics with sufficient clarity, logical development, and appropriate style and tone. The course also aims to prepare students for their future needs, in further study or the workplace, to familiarize students with the principles and skills of effective professional communication that is performed in English. English Writing IV - Course Description This is the fourth of a series of English writing courses offered to students who are English majors at the School of International Studies of Sun Yat-sen University. This course aims to further develop students writing skills and encourage creativity, cultural learning and selfexpression. The focus is on helping students find their directions and styles in writing through experiment, practice and constructive feedback. The course will cover the main aspects of the narrative, including character, showing and telling, plot, setting, point of view and the like. Students will produce their own narratives at the end of the course. Verbal Communication I & II Description of Learners: This course is offered to the first year students majoring in English. The number of students in each class is around 25. They have mixed abilities because of their previous learning experiences, different interests, various styles and speed of learning. Most of the students can sustain basic conversation. They can talk about themselves and their immediate environment, but can still only comfortably discuss a limited range of topics and handle a limited range of conversation situations. Once they get beyond this limited range, they tend to break down quickly because of inadequate vocabulary or because they lack strategies for coping when they can t think of the word they want. use of conversation strategies and language functions. Enhancing their public presentation skills, discussion skills and social interaction skills. Developing their enthusiasm and discipline for seeking and creating an English language environment for oral communication. Additional goals include: teaching new vocabulary and expressions; pronunciation and intonation; cultural information. Verbal Communication III & IV Description of Learners: The students are all sophomores majoring in English. The number of students in each class is around 25. They have mixed abilities because of their previous learning experiences, different interests, various styles and speed of learning. Most of the students can easily handle daily conversation. They can talk about issues of daily life and society fairly easily (though generally not without errors in grammar and usage). However, they would still have difficulty discussing more advanced topics. Objectives: Further expanding the range of topics students can discuss. Building students ability to express ideas with greater fluency, clarity, and precision. Improving students communication skills, such as retelling, debating, and making speeches. Preparing students for the TEM-4 (Test for English majors, Band 4) oral test. Helping students become efficient language learners and confident language users. Additional goals include: teaching new vocabulary and expressions; pronunciation and intonation; cultural information. Objectives: Expanding the range of topics students are able to talk about. Building their ability to organize and express their ideas on topics of general interest. Building their ability to make appropriate

6 Courses of SIS Postgraduate Program Advanced English Reading and Writing This course is developed to achieve the following objectives: Build upon research and brainstorming skills covered in two-week summer class. Utilize readings for fluency and vocabulary building. Reflect upon and respond to questions raised by readings. To exercise discernment and build upon academic interests through choosing and narrowing one topic area for deeper research and writing. To learn specific writing skills including organizing research through the card method and through a linked document, writing a succinct and narrow thesis paragraph, an abstract, an introduction, a literature review, a bibliography in APA format, a research proposal, and a discussion section of a research paper. Additional writing goals include: writing a letter requesting research in proper register and format, writing a press release, and writing an effective resume. Advance English This course is developed to achieve the following objectives: Challenge postgraduate students to enhance poise, bearing, and communicative skills in formal discourse. Provide practice situations in an English-only environment for discussions in English, leading to more effortless fluency. Provide strategies for language acquisition (including vocabulary) and weekly collocations for uses in professional and academic settings. Provide weekly speaking assignments so that spoken English becomes more fluent. Address issues of pronunciation or intonation observed during class time. Equip students with interview skills useful in employment or university interviews.

7 From the program you can Gain invaluable experience in leadership and organizational skills Prepare yourself for a career as a language educator Work and make friends with different people from across China and around the world Take various Chinese Language Courses offered free to the SIS international instructors We are looking for instructors Who are under the age of 50 Who are native speakers of English, American, and Canadian nationality Who love Chinese culture and working and living abroad Who are enthusiastic in working with students and have strong sense of responsibility With master s degree in the field of linguistics, language education, history, science, culture studies, literature, etc. Being able to teach Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking English Who have at least 2 years of teaching experience in or outside of China Who can teach more than one subject with a total of 16 periods a week (45 minutes per period) Who can hold office hours outside class for students to ask questions or discuss problems with a total of 2 hours a week Who can work with other teachers at the Writing Center to help students with their English writing skills for academic and professional purposes Who can assist in material development and work with other international teachers to create a workshop for the SIS Teacher Professional Development Program We can provide the instructors with A salary of 9600 RMB per month while the tax should be the charge of the instructors Free accommodation on campus with campus internet access.
