4 Registration Process Enrollment is limited and classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Remember to register early! Deadline for Session 1: Deadline for Session 2: June 1, 2012 July 6, Student completes the student information section of the registration form and schedules a time to meet with their counselor. The registration form is located on the website at extendedhours/summerschool or in the school. 2. Counselor meets with student to verify course needs, indicates course selected, signs the registration form, and registers the student on OASIS.. 3. Counselor instructs student regarding payment to the school financial specialist via cash, check, money order, or credit card and informs student of who verifies waiver forms, waiver options, and documentation needed by parent. If the student has a waiver form, the student takes appropriate documentation to the designated staff member for verification. The staff member signs the form, and returns it to the student. 4. Student brings signed registration form,* payment, and waiver information (if applicable) to the school financial specialist. Students will be provided a receipt for payment which will serve as confirmation in the class. 5. No registrations will be processed without payment. Checks must be preprinted with name and address or the check will not be accepted. Make checks payable to MCPS and include Student ID on the check below the address. Returned checks and declined credit cards will result in student being withdrawn from class unless cash payment is made to the Regional Summer School Office. 6. Students will be notified only if class is cancelled due to low enrollment. For Non-MCPS Students Only Complete the registration form, along with all signatures, and mail it along with payment to: Regional Summer School Office 850 Hungerford Drive, Room 100 Rockville, Maryland No registrations will be processed without payment. Checks must be preprinted with name and address or the check will not be accepted. Make checks payable to MCPS and include a phone number below the address. Payment receipt will be mailed to the address on the registration form. 5 General Information Accommodations On the first day of class, parents and/or legal guardians should provide the summer school site administrator with a copy of the accommodations included on the student s Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan (if applicable). A special educator will be on site. Attendance The highly concentrated programs offered in the high school summer school sessions make full-time attendance necessary. Explanatory notes from parents will be required for absences and tardiness, and all cases will be subject to verification by the summer school site office. Cancellation of Courses Classes that do not meet enrollment requirements will be cancelled. Students will be notified if their class is cancelled and given the opportunity to switch to another class and/or location or request a refund. Clearance All fees must be paid and all books and materials loaned to students for the summer session must be returned to the appropriate teachers. Discipline Students are expected to comply with all rules and regulations of MCPS and their summer school site. Eligible Student The high school summer school is planned for students who are presently enrolled in Grades Students who have completed Grade 8 may take a credit course with the recommendation of their home school principal (or designee) and the approval of their receiving high school s principal (or designee). Careful planning is critical to the high school program. Final Examinations Final exams will be given in accordance with Board of Education policy on the last day of class. Graduation Information Graduation information packets, including forms, will be available from the summer school site secretary. MCPS students planning to graduate upon successful completion of summer school need to submit selected forms to the summer school site secretary no later than Friday, July 28, Rehearsal: Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at Richard Montgomery High School auditorium, 2:00 p.m. Graduation: Thursday, August 9, 2012, at Richard Montgomery High School auditorium, 11:00 a.m. Medical Information Please Note: Notify the summer school site of any important medical information that may pertain to the student. Refunds (Form is located at departments/extendedhours/summerschool) Refunds will be made if a student's class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment. Refunds will be made to students who have never attended a class. Refunds will not be made after one week s attendance. An exception is made for students who attend less than one week and must withdraw because of hospitalization or home confinement for personal illness. Refunds will not be made if a student is expelled from summer school. The deadline to request a refund is as follows: Session 1: Friday, July 13, 2012 Session 2: Friday, August 3, 2012 Registration (Form is located at org/departments/extendedhours/summerschool) See the registration guidelines on page 2 on how to register. Report Cards Report cards will be mailed to the students homes at the end of the course. For non-mcps students, a copy of the report card will be mailed to the student s home school and home. Resident/Nonresident Students Resident a student residing year-round in Montgomery County, or whose parent or legal guardian is a county resident. Nonresident a student whose home school and parent or legal guardian are outside Montgomery County. International students attending non-u.s. schools and not registered with the MCPS Residency and International Admissions Office are not eligible to enroll in the program. Transportation Parents are responsible for providing transportation for their students to the summer school centers. For information on the Ride On, visit or call 311. Tuition Full payment of tuition is required for all students in order to complete the process and ensure a seat in the class. Payments are made at the local school. Montgomery County Residents: $300 per course Nonresidents: $340 per course Checks or money orders should be made payable to MCPS. Checks must be preprinted with name and address, or check will be returned. Include the student s name and MCPS ID number below the address. For non-mcps students, include a phone number below the address. A $25 fee is charged for returned checks and declined credit cards. To pay by credit/debit card (VISA or MasterCard only), complete and sign the credit card information box on the Summer School Registration form. Waiver (Form is located at departments/extendedhours/summerschool) Depending on verification of total household income, a payment reduction may be available to students through tuition waivers. 10 ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Registrations are to be completed through the ESOL Resource Teachers and School-Based ESOL counselors at each school in collaboration with the Resource School Counselor. Please contact your school for registration and waiver forms. ESOL registrations must be signed by the ESOL Resource Teacher at the student s home school. Students in ESOL Levels 1 and 2 will use texts and materials from the Milestones program to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. Students in Levels 3, 4, and 5 will learn and further develop academic language using the approved MCPS ESOL curriculum and instructional resources. To enroll in this program, a student must be A resident of Montgomery County; Enrolled in a regular ESOL class prior to the beginning of summer school, and be recommended by the ESOL teacher and/or ESOL resource teacher whose signature will be required on the student registration form; ESOL Session 1 In need of summer school according to ESOL program criteria as follows: ESOL Level 1 or 2 if in high school, and recommended by the ESOL teacher (see note above). ESOL 3, with prior approval of ESOL resource teacher; Current eighth graders must have their ESOL teacher s approval before registering for the high school ESOL classes; Registered with the MCPS Residency and International Admissions Office (if considered a foreign student), located at Rocking Horse Road Center, 4910 Macon Road, Rockville, Maryland 20852, telephone ; Recommended by the ESOL Testing Center for summer school classes (after the last day of classes for students) or meet other criteria for admittance, as designated by the Division of ESOL/Bilingual Programs. 11 Project Discovery Project Discovery: Physically Disabled Grades K 12 Project Discovery is co-sponsored by MCPS and the Department of Recreation (MCRD). This program is for students with physical disabilities ages 5 18 and who generally demonstrate average cognitive ability. The program includes activities such as creative arts, music, and physical activities (including swimming). Occupational and physical therapists, a speech pathologist, a nurse, and volunteers from the recreation department provide support to the program. The program capacity is 30 students. Location: Forest Knolls ES Dates: July 9 August 2, 2012 Hours: 9:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Tuition: MCPS $140 and MCRD $250 For further information about Project Discovery and a registration form for this program, contact Ms. Christine Novick at Completed registration must be accompanied by a check or money order made payable to MCPS for $140, and one to MCRD for $250. The deadline for submitting registration forms is Friday, May 18, Please send completed registration to: Ms. Christine Novick, Physical Disabilities Program, 8001 Lynnbrook Drive, Bethesda, MD Student elearning Online Courses The Student elearning program provides students with opportunities to obtain high school credit through internetbased courses. These courses are taught by highly qualified MCPS teachers who conduct classes, give assignments, answer questions, lead discussions, enter grades, and communicate course content and student progress to parents. The teachers are dedicated to providing a successful online experience for each student. Every MCPS online course requires a number of face-to-face sessions which students must attend in order to receive credit in the course. Students who are highly motivated, have good time-management skills, and can work independently usually experience the most success in an online course. During summer courses, the same curriculum taught in a semester course is compacted within a 3-week period. Students should expect to spend 4 5 hours per day completing course assignments. Comprehensive Health Education, Foundations of Technology, and approved AP courses are being offered this summer.
