1 TOKIWA UNIVERSITY STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAM - FALL 2013 This is the guidance for the Tokiwa University Student Exchange Program 2013, which is held during the Fall Semester, from mid-september 2013 to mid-january Eligible students are encouraged to apply for the program through the relevant department at their institutions. 1. COURSES Tokiwa exchange students can choose from a variety of courses on such subjects as Japanese language and culture in a vibrant academic environment, situated near historic sites, rivers, lake and parks in the city of Mito. Under the student exchange program, the courses listed below will be offered for transferable credits. It should be noted that one course normally consists of fifteen classes, each of which is a 90-minute period. This should be a total of 22.5 hours of instruction per course. Each exchange student is required to take (i) EITHER the basic OR the intermediate Japanese language course, according to the results of the Japanese Placement Test, and (ii) four of the Japanese affairs and culture courses. [JAPANESE LANGUAGE] Each Japanese language course (basic or intermediate) offered to exchange students consists of five classes (5 X 90-minutes) per week, and lasts fifteen weeks, which leads to a total of hours of instruction. [JAPANESE AFFAIRS AND CULTURE] The following courses are planned for exchange students as transferable credits to learn basic aspects of 1

2 Japanese affairs, including politics, economy, society, culture, and history. The students are asked to take four classes, including compulsory Japanese Affairs I. The courses are taught in English unless otherwise indicated. FINANCIAL SUPPORT (1) Tuition Fees: Based on the agreement between Tokiwa University and the participating schools, exchange students pay no tuition fees at Tokiwa University. (2) Accommodation fee for the Tokiwa International Hall: Exchange students will reside in the Tokiwa International Hall free-of-charge and share a room with one or two Tokiwa students. (3) Scholarship: Exchange students will receive a total of 100,000 yen for their living expenses. For this scholarship, they are required to participate in the English language programs as English conversation partners with Tokiwa students in the English Connections (EC) program, and in other positions, for about 10 hours a week. (4) Field trips and excursions in and around the Ibaraki area: Exchange students can join in free field trips and excursions organized by Tokiwa University. (5) Air fare: Students are required to arrange and pay for their trip to and from Japan. (6) Insurance: Students are required to take out their travel / health insurances. 3. HOUSING Students can stay in the Tokiwa International Hall (a university dormitory) during the Fall Semester (September 2013 January 2014) and enjoy the following conveniences: (1) Less than a 5 minute walk to the campus. (2) Internet access. (3) An air-conditioned suite which consists of 3 bedrooms, a shared living room, a shared shower and a toilet. Within the living room, there is a kitchenette with a refrigerator. There is a large kitchen and a common room which every resident can use. 2

3 (4) A dorm warden. (5) Use of the tennis court beside the Tokiwa International Hall and the gym on campus by reservation. 3

4 4. FIELD TRIPS AND EXCURSIONS Tokiwa University will organize occasional field trips and excursions in and around the Ibaraki area. 5. ELIGIBILITY Students must meet the following requirements in order to be considered as exchange students of the program: (1) Currently enrolled in an institution participating in the ongoing exchange program with Tokiwa University. (2) Has completed at least two Japanese language courses (or courses equivalent to Level 4 of the Japanese Proficiency Test) and one Japanese culture or related course before the fall of (3) Has acquired a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher (on a 4-scale) for all undergraduate courses at the time of the application deadline. (4) Has the intention to return to the home institution and complete his/her degree. (5) Will abide by Japanese law and regulations set forth by Tokiwa University. 6. SELECTION PROCEDURE 4

5 [APPLICATION ] All of the following documents are required with the application form: (1) Paper entitled My Interest in Japanese Language and Culture ( 日 words in English OR 800 characters in Japanese). (2) Official transcript of undergraduate course work. (3) Certificate of health.
