It was a joy for me to visit the school and have the opportunity to recognize 10 students, one parent and one teacher for their outstanding work and contributions. At the Coffee N Conversation, Mr. Pendergrass, Principal, and I were joined by Mr. Manuel Garcia, South Region Director, and Ms. Sharon Carpenter, Miami-Dade Public Library, who provided a presentation on free resources. Congratulations to the boys and girls recognized, as well as, the parent and teacher.

2 Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 2 of 5 DISTRICT STUDENT LEADERSHIP ADVISORY COUNCIL (SLAC) CORAL REEF SENIOR A packed room of District 9 student leaders at the Reef. I always look forward to my monthly meetings with students from my 10 senior high schools where they engage in school board policy development, life skills and hear presentations from guest speakers on topics of interest. We thank our guest speakers this month who provided information and made presentations on the College Application Process, Scholarships, Financial Aid and Student Loans, as well as, available Library Resources: Ms. Lou Gilman, CAP Advisor at Coral Reef Senior, Ms. Aya Olmedillo, Financial Planner, and Ms. Ellen Book, Branch Manager, Miami-Dade Public Library System. WISHING FAREWELL TO RUTH ROA, WLRN MEDIA ASSISTANT, AFTER TWO YEARS OF WORKING THE CAMERAS DURING THE MONTHLY SCHOOL BOARD MEETINGS THE SPANISH CUTLER BAY SR HOSTED A FACULTY LUNCHEON TO CELEBRATE HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH MEETING WITH DR. ROSSI, PEDIATRIC CARDIOLO- GIST, NICHOLAS CHILDRENS HOSPITAL, AND LASTINGER CENTER, UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA XYLOPHONE CLUB FROM COLLIER COUNTY SCHOOLS PROUDLY WEAR THEIR D9 MEDALS

3 Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 3 of 5 COFFEE N VINELAND K-8 CENTER Ten fourth through eighth grade students were recognized at Vineland K-8 Coffee N Conversation, as well as, a parent and one teacher. A special treat to watch Ms. Nikki Jose s class conducting a science experiment while we recognized her hard work and dedication. Thank you to Ms. Krtausch, Principal, and the rest of the Vineland family for their warm welcome and Mr. Ruan, South Region Director, for his support. Recognized Dr. Marjorie Wessel, for her 60 years of educational service to children. She served in the capacity of classroom teacher, athletic coach and administrator. After retirement she continued her commitment to education by serving as a member of the Florida Commission on Women s and Girls Participation in Athletics and Extracurricular Activities, Program Chair of the Dade County PTA, School Awards Committee Chair, Chairperson for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Excellence Advisory Committee of Miami Dade County Public Schools. Thank you, Marjorie, for all your love and compassion shown to students over the years. CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH WITH THE HOMESTEAD-MIAMI MARIACHI CONSERVATORY COLONIAL DRIVE STUDENT IS RECOGNIZED AT DO THE RIGHT THING CEREMONY

4 Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 4 of 5 COUNCIL OF THE GREAT CITY SCHOOLS 61 ST FALL CONFERENCE DISTRICT 9 NEWS Kick it Forward Miami, a community service project started in 2014 by Mica Wenger, a senior at Palmetto Sr. where she collects new and gently used soccer clothing and equipment for underprivileged students. Recently, the aspiring soccer players living at the Chapman Partnership Children s Shelter were surprised and elated by all the goodies they received from Mica. Cutler Bay Senior High School students participated in 'Inspire Kindness Day' as part of the Sandy Hook Promise and Values Matter Initiative. Student members from the school s No Place for Hate Club visited all classrooms and had students write a positive/kind message on a Post- It. These were collected and displayed on a large poster by the Main Office. Carlos Barredo, a student at BioTech is a Finalist of the Eco-Hero Contest which is a program managed by the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment. Cutler Bay Senior High School is participating in the 'Book Club 23' campaign and as a result was visited and filmed by Univision 23 and will be featured on the weekly morning segments in Noticias 23 Al Amanecer.
