1 Normal Community High School BACK TO SCHOOL NEWSLETTER WELCOME On behalf of the entire administration, faculty and student body, we give a warm welcome to the new Principal of Normal Community High School, Mr. Trevor Chapman. Mr. Chapman comes to us from Evans Jr. High where he was principal. We also want to welcome Mr. Jeff Barnard as a new Asst. Principal. He comes to us from Hoose Elementary where we was an Asst. Principal. With their energy, enthusiasm and focus on education and learning, our school community will achieve more! SCHOOL PICTURES School pictures will be taken during registration hours. Picture package order forms will be available. HR Imaging is the photography company. The school picture is the image that will appear in the yearbook. If your student is unable to be at registration, a make up day for pictures will be in October. No package purchase is required in order to be included in the school s yearbook. Yearbooks that were ordered last year will be available for pick up at walk in registration LOCKERS AND LOCKS Each student is assigned a hall locker. Students are required to have combination locks for their hallway and physical education lockers. Locks may be purchased at school for $6.00 each or you can purchase them at a store. NCHS is not liable for stolen property. Lock it Up!!! REGISTRATION Freshman: Monday, August 7, 11:00-1:00 & 3:00-5:00 Sophomores: Tuesday, August 8, 11:00-1:00 & 3:00-5:00 Juniors: Wednesday, August 9, 11:00-1:00 & 3:00-5:00 *Seniors can register any of the three days. Parents, there are 2 parts to registration. You must register electronically and also attend walk in registration. Online registration is now open. All current Unit 5 families are required to register their students electronically. Registration is accessed through Skyward Family Access link found on the Unit 5 website. If you do not have access to a computer or you do not complete the online registration you will need to register your student(s) electronically at NCHS during walk in registration. Students will receive their schedules at walk in registration. Families needing to register NCHS students in multiple grade levels (9 12) may register all on the same day. LAPTOP PICK-UP If your student is renting a laptop from the district, they may pick up their device at Heartland Community College. (1500 West Raab Road in Normal) Pick up times: August 1st Unit 5 employees 3:00-6:00 pm August 2nd Anyone may pick up from 12:00 pm 7:00 pm August 3rd Anyone may pick up from 12:00 pm 7:00 pm

2 IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS Physical exams are required of all entering freshmen and all out-of-state or out-of-country transfer students. The exam must be current within one year prior to entering school. Illinois law requires ALL students entering school at ALL grade levels (K 12) to show proof of: 2 (full) MMR vaccines 1 varicella vaccine Students entering 9th grade must show proof of receiving: 2 varicella (chicken pox) vaccines ALL students entering 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades must show proof of 1 Tdap vaccine. Students entering the 12th grade will be required to receive: 2 doses of meningococcal vaccine Please be sure all required physical exams and immunizations are completed before the start of school. Your student will not be allowed at school the first day if he/she is not current on immunizations. Bring the completed exam form with you to registration, keeping a copy for your records. If your 9th grade student is participating in a fall sport, give a copy to the coach and bring the original to registration. Schedule your immunization appointments now for the school year. The Health Department offers vaccinations to McLean County students who are eligible for the vaccine for Children PLUS program. These are students who: -ARE ENROLLED IN MEDICAID OR KIDCARE -DO NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE -ARE AMERICAN INDIAN, OR ALASKAN NATIVE -HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE THAT DOES NOT PAY FOR VACCINES The McLean County Health Department phone number is Please note: 1. Students must be healthy and have a current immunization record. 2. Parent, legal guardian or an authorized proxy must accompany students under 18. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Students in all PE classes will be required to wear a standard uniform consisting of an orange or gray t- shirt (last name in black letters across the shoulders), black PE shorts, white socks and gym shoes. If you choose to have a sweatshirt or sweatpants available, in addition to your uniform, these items must be plain colored with no words or pictures other than your name. Instructors will indicate appropriate times to wear sweat clothes. Swim classes require swim trunks for the boys, and one piece swim suits for the girls. Success in Physical Education requires active involvement in each class. Failure to dress in the proper uniform precludes healthy and safe participation, and as such dress cuts interfere with success. Department procedures will be implemented each semester to encourage all students to be properly dress for participation each day. A loaner PE uniform will be available on the first dress cut or for circumstances such as theft or temporary financial hardship. PE clothes can be purchased here: REPORT CARD Academic Report Cards will not be mailed to parents with 9th-12th grade students. You may view student report cards through the Skyward Family Access link from either the Unit 5 website or the individual school website. Another organization helping families with a financial need with physicals is KidCare. You may reach them at

3 Student Breakfast Student Lunches Tier 1 Student Lunches Tier 2 New Lunch Fees $1.45 per day $2.15 per day $2.80 per day Our food service also offers a complete salad bar, sandwich bar, and many ala-carte items that may be purchased. No cash is accepted in the food lines. Students must have money in their lunch accounts in order to purchase food. Money or a check can be placed in an envelope and dropped in the food service door no later than 9:30 a.m. in order to have access to the funds on that day. You may also access your student s lunch account through Skyward. Please use the parent account. You cannot add money using your Student s sign-in and password. Money can be added at any time. Unit 5 Food Service will implement the DHS automated system to create a list of NCHS students who automatically qualify for free/reduced lunch. Forms will be available at registration for families who do not automatically qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. Food/Beverages Food and/or beverages (except water) are not allowed in the classroom. Delivery of outside food products during the school day is not permitted for students. Iron Drivers All students driving to school must purchase a parking pass. We have a full lot daily and want to keep everyone safe. Students being picked up or dropped off should use the front of the building and not the faculty lot. It s very important that students to not parking or drive behind the building. This is for their safety as delivery trucks, special education buses, semi-trailers, athletic buses, etc. use that area. Student Parking Lot Enter: By the electronic sign Student Parking Lot Exit: West end of parking lot ATTENDANCE Attendance in all assigned periods, including homeroom, is required. Each day a student is absent, his/her parent or guardian must call the attendance line to report the absence. Please call in by 10:30 if possible. The number is A student s parent/guardian may make arrangements for early dismissal due to an appointment, family emergency, college visit, etc. If your student needs an early dismissal please leave a message on the attendance line at least an hour prior to the time you need your student released. Parents/guardians do not need to come in to the school to sign their students in or out as long as they have called the hotline. All students are expected and required to be on time to each class. Consequences will be administered for unexcused tardies. Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways you can prepare your child for success both in school and in life. When you make school attendance a priority, you help your child get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior and have a better chance of graduating from high school. When students are absent for fewer days, their grades and reading skills often improve even among those students who are struggling in school. Students who attend school regularly also feel more connected to their community, develop important social skills and friendships, and are significantly more likely to graduate from high school, setting them up for a strong future. Counselors are assigned to students alphabetically by last name. Counselors are available to assist with academic problems, educational or vocational planning, and personal issues. It will be helpful to arrange an appointment with the Administrative Assistant, Mrs. Laurie Beyer, in the Counseling Office. Her phone number is (309) She will schedule an appointment for before or after school, during a study hall, or during a lunch period. The Counseling Office has a wide variety of materials available for check out. Materials include college catalogs and career planning guides. The counselors are available for consultation with parents and guardians. They will assist with examination and interpretation of student records. Planning for the future is very important. Students must have a plan in order to reach a desired goal. The high school counselor has many sources of information about careers. We encourage all students and parents to talk with a counselor and avail themselves for the many resources in our office. Avoid drama. This cannot be stressed enough. Enjoy yourself! Freshman year can be so much fun if you choose to make it so. Relax! Try not to get yourself too worked up, but instead find ways to cope with stressful situations appropriately. If you ever become a target for a bully, don't be afraid to report to a counselor, principal, or a teacher. Keep your locker(s) locked at all times. High school theft is not uncommon. If you are ill, go to the nurse s office. The nurse will contact your parents when appropriate.
