The primary school curriculum (Kindergarten to Year 6) is divided into six key learning areas: English; Mathematics; Science and Technology; Creative and Practical Arts; Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE); and Physical Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). The Years 7 10 curriculum includes eight key learning areas (KLAs): English; Mathematics; Science; Human Society and Its Environment; Personal Development, Health and Physical Education; Creative Arts; Technological and Applied Studies; and Languages. In addition students can chose to study elective subjects in areas such as design and technology, visual art, music, languages other than English and computing. Students who satisfactorily complete the course and fulfil strict attendance requirements are awarded the NSW School Certificate at the end of Year 10. International students who enrol in senior secondary school (Years 11 and 12) study a two year course and on successful completion are awarded the Higher School Certificate (HSC). This is the highest educational award in New South Wales schools. The HSC is an internationally recognised credential that provides a strong foundation for students wishing to pursue tertiary study. To gain a HSC, students must have completed a minimum of 12 units of Preliminary courses and 10 units of HSC courses. Most courses are 2 units. Students must satisfactorily complete the Preliminary course (studied in Year 11) before they are eligible to commence the corresponding HSC course (studied in Year 12). English, or English as a Second Language (ESL), is the only compulsory subject for the HSC. It is serviced by bus from Epping, Carlingford and Parramatta railway stations and is close to the M2 motorway. Barrenjoey is a fine school which has welcomed me and other international students. The teachers are experienced and helpful and I have made many Australian friends. Today I returned from a ski trip to Perisher Valley and I feel I now have new friends for life.
