2 What is the Spanish Immersion Program? It is an enrichment program for native English speakers, that provides academic instruction (Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Language Arts) in a second language (Spanish). 2

7 Is Spanish Immersion the right program for my child? Kindergarten students who are reading at least at a Lexile level of 202 by the final universal screener reporting time (May 20, 2016) shall be considered for program participation. 7

8 Parents: Is the Spanish Immersion Program the right program for you? Students residing in the Kingwood area participate in the Spanish Immersion program at Bear Branch Elementary Students residing in the Atascocita, Humble, Summerwood and Fall Creek area participate in the Spanish Immersion program at Pine Forest Elementary Transportation is NOT provided for students residing outside of the Bear Branch and Pine Forest school zones. Parents of students selected to participate in the Spanish Immersion program are required to sign a 5 year commitment 8

9 What do I need to do as a parent? Read in English every night Utilize Istation online as directed by teacher. Complete weekly writing piece which include: Helping with daily language homework (spelling and/or grammar). Revise,edit and review teacher directions as stated on homework. 9

10 Do I need to speak Spanish? Parents do not need to speak Spanish at home. Depending on the subject, homework may be in either English or Spanish. Spanish homework will be a review or extended practice of content already taught in the classroom. What does homework look like for SIP students? Homework looks different in every grade level. 10

11 STAAR Testing Students will be taking the STAAR tests in English beginning in 3 rd grade. 3 rd grade STAAR Reading & Math 4 th grade STAAR Reading, Math & Writing 5 th grade STAAR Reading, Math & Science All Benchmark Assessments will be administered in English. 11

12 Opportunities for Middle School We currently offer a continuation of Spanish immersion education at Creekwood Middle School through an accelerated Spanish program. Advanced Spanish Classes Currently Offered at Other Middle School Campuses (8 th grade): Humble MS Atascocita MS Timberwood MS Ross Sterling MS Woodcreek MS 12

13 Opportunities for High School SIP students have the opportunity to take Spanish III, Spanish IV and Spanish V in high school. This presents opportunities for dual college credit. SIP students, because of completing the required foreign language credit early on, could pursue a third language. Campuses currently offering Spanish IV and V: Summer Creek HS, Kingwood HS, Humble HS, Atascocita HS Campuses currently offering Spanish IV: Kingwood Park HS 13

14 Application Process Applications for the Spanish Immersion program will be accepted from April 8th to April 27, 2016 at 3:30 p.m. All applications must be returned to the front office at Bear Branch (2500 Garden Lake Drive, Kingwood, TX 77339) or Pine Forest Elementary (19702 West Lake Houston Parkway, Humble, TX 77346). Upon meeting entrance qualifications, students will be placed in the program by the tiered lottery below. If more qualifying applicants are received than seats available; students may be placed on a waiting list according to the tiered lottery: Tier 1 K students zoned and attending BBE or PFE K students attending BBE or PFE but not zoned Tier 2 Lottery (transferred students) K students zoned to BBE or PFE but not attending Tier 3 Lottery (private K from attendance zone) Tier 4 Lottery K students attending other Humble ISD campuses Parents will be notified of the student s acceptance into the program during the last week of the school year. 14
