3 GELI Activities GELI has two Activities Officers who organise and host a variety of events for GELI students in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. These activities will help to improve your English speaking skills and are a lot of fun! At GELI you will have a choice of many free activities as well as other activities at discounted prices. Activities include: cultural events community engagement work skills volunteering theme parks parties dance classes sports weekends away trips to islands and beaches barbeques Speedmate Griffith University also has many special interest clubs, societies and sporting teams. You can join these to experience university culture, practice conversational English and have a great time! Speedmate - March 2012 Speedmate is set up similar to a speed date session where students speak to each other and rotate every 3 minutes. It is a great way for students to practice their English and make new friends! Cooking Club Easter Easter Morning Tea - April 2012 To celebrate Easter, GELI students were invited to a free morning tea celebration where they enjoyed sampling hot cross buns and entering the Easter egg decorating competition! Cooking Club - February 2012 In the February GELI Cooking Club, students learnt how to cook lamingtons, a traditional Australian sweet treat. The best part was getting to eat them! Mt Cootha Mt Cootha Lookout - February 2012 Students were treated to the best views of Brisbane during a trip to the Mt Cootha lookout. Cameras were needed to take plenty of photos of the breathtaking scenery. Currumbin Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary - March 2012 During a day trip to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary students were able to see native Australian animals including emus and crocodiles, cuddle a koala and feed kangaroos! 6 Studying at GELI Academic Pathways Students can enter into a variety of Griffith University degree programs through several pathways. Academic counselling by GELI helps students to reach their language goals and to increase their chances of successfully entering university. Teaching Staff GELI teaching staff are highly-qualified and very experienced. Many GELI teachers have taught internationally and bring a deep understanding of different languages and cultures to the classroom. Classroom Technology At GELI we combine the best features of face-to-face classroom learning with online learning and mobile learning components. All classrooms are equipped with the latest information and communication technologies. Teachers use computers, data projectors and visualisers to enable classroom activities to be active and engaging learning experiences. Mobile technologies, including MP3 players, mobile phones and tablet PCs are also used to enhance teaching and learning. Independent Learning Each GELI centre has an Independent Learning Centre (ILC) where students can undertake additional English language practice before and after scheduled class times. These are dedicated facilities where guided independent learning can take place with the help of GELI staff. ILC Educational Materials: ipads (e-books and apps) Graded readers Grammar and vocabulary textbooks Magazines Language learning software Online resources and activities To get the most out of independent learning, students are provided with weekly guided lesson plans to supplement and complement the core class curriculum. The lessons can be accessed electronically 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Book Club Book club is a fun way to improve reading and comprehension skills and gives students an opportunity to practise their speaking by meeting with a teacher and other students to discuss their book. Book club is held once a week at all GELI centres. Students enjoy coming to book club because it s a fun activity and a great place to make new friends. The activities are always held after class so it is a great way to spend your free time. It is nice to spend time with other international students and learn about their culture and way of life. All of the GELI activities are great fun. Every level I try to do all of them but sometimes there are so many that it s impossible. I am really happy here at GELI. Every day I enjoy my classes, my friends and my teachers.
