3 Global Competence Program Independent Study Choose a global issue/region to research Global Community Service (30 hours, related to topic) Travel (foreign or domestic) Reflection Paper Final Presentation Students work with a faculty member throughout the process Students receive special recognition at graduation Deadline to apply: June 15, 2016 Applications online or in library.

4 Chinese Exchange Program Description: 9th year! Ten students from Gaoxin-Tangnan School in Xi an visit in Fall and live with SHS host families. In Spring, 10 SHS students visit Xi an and stay with host families from their school. Our students get to visit Beijing and Shanghai, too! Timeline & Application Process-*Accepting applications to host, now! Students who wish to travel to China go through an interview process in December. Students who are willing to host a Chinese exchange student in the fall receive extra points on our interview rubric. See Ms. Collins in the library for an application. Hosting- 8 weeks; October - November, 2016 China Trip (Beijing, Xi an, Shanghai) March 7 to May 7, 2017 Cost: $5,000 (approximate)

5 French Exchange Every two years ( ) Open to students in grades SHS students are selected to spend two weeks in France at the end of November. Students live with host families, attend school, and explore Paris. These same SHS students host a French student for two weeks in April of the same school year. Cost: $3,000 (approximate)

6 Paris Trip Every two years (April 2017) SHS students spend April break in Paris. In addition to visiting sites in the City of Lights, students visit Monet s Gardens, Versailles, Chartres, and several châteaux in the Loire Valley. This trip is open to all students who are in grades at the time of the trip. Cost: $4,000 (approximate)

7 Quebec Trip This French immersion trip takes place during Martin Luther King weekend when possible. SHS seniors spend four days visiting Old Québec and participating in winter sports activities such as snowshoeing, dog sledding, and inner tubing. This trip is open to seniors who take French. Cost: $600 (approximate)

8 England Trip Every two years (April 2017) SHS students spend April break in London. In addition to visiting sites in London, students will visit Shakespeare s birthplace, see a Royal Shakespeare Company theatre performance, visit Windsor Castle, Stonehenge, see Two West End Theatre Performances and much more! This trip is open to all students who are in grades at the time of the trip. Cost: $4,000 (approximate)

9 World Challenge Peru Trip *Summer 2017 (June 30th approximate departure date) *Description: 16 day journey includes sightseeing, a trek to Machu Picchu, and a global service project. World Challenge journeys help students develop student leadership skills. *Cost: approximately $5,000 *Meetings will be held throughout the school year with participants to prepare mentally, physically, and culturally. *Student/Parent Information Night: Wednesday, June 1st, 6:30 p.m., SHS Library

10 Global Nomads Video Conference with a classroom in the Middle East (4x year) Share perspectives and learn about the community and culture of your partner school This year we are paired with a school in Jordan Meets after school but not every week *Students could tie a theme from videoconference to GCP

11 Council for International Educational Exchange Website: ciee.org ***As an official CIEE Global Navigator High School, SHS students are guaranteed a minimum of $20,000 in scholarship funds for summer travel. December 1, 2016 application deadline. Language & Culture - 30 hrs. of FL instruction; homestay for 4 weeks; excursions. China, Chile, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, Spain. Service & Leadership- Survival language skills; 3 weeks; 45 hours of community service. China, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Mexico, South Africa. Global Discovery - No FL component; hours of subject area instruction in entrepreneurship, marine science, any much more. Bonaire, Botswana, Costa Rica, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Tanzania, Thailand.

12 Seal of Biliteracy An award given in recognition of students who have attained proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in two or more languages by high school graduation. This opportunity is currently in the development stages.
