The perfect summer break program Orange Coast College English professor and award-winning author and screenwriter Raymond Obstfeld will be taking a group of students to Cambridge, England. After two weeks of classes at OCC, students will live and study for five weeks in the beautiful and historic town of Cambridge, home to one of the world s most prestigious universities. Why study in cambridge? Cambridge is a beautiful place to live and study. Home to the worldfamous University (which is now over 800 years old!), the town also boasts some of the country s finest museums, art galleries and theatres. Shopping, entertainment and nightlife are all within easy reach of the accommodation and teaching spaces - the historic city centre has something for everyone. Not only is the town itself a wonderful place to study abroad, it is also ideally located to ensure easy access to the rest of the UK and Europe. In the past, students have taken advantage of the 45 minute train ride to London and explored many of the sights in the UK capital, from Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace, to the National Theatre and the Harry Potter Studio. 4 professor raymond obstfeld summer 2018: july 3rd august 6th literature, film & creative writing The perfect summer break program Orange Coast College English professor Raymond Obstfeld will be taking a group of 40 students to Cambridge England. Students will live and study in Cambridge, England for five weeks after completing two weeks of classes at OCC. Through this students will be able to combine the travel and excitement of living and studying abroad with the completion of an OCC-accredited course. From those looking to pursue creative writing, Cambridge is a truly inspirational place to write - at least, famous authors (from Sylvia Plath to John Milton, and Virginia Woolf to Lord Byron) thought so. Expert instruction offered alongside the unique environment of Cambridge provides the opportunity for students to dramatically improve their writing. For those with an interest in Film and Literature, Cambridge has a rich history, having produced some of the finest actors (Sir Ian McKellen - The Lord of the Rings, King Lear), actresses (Emma Thompson - The Remains of the Day, An Education), directors (Paul Greengrass - The Bourne Ultimatum) and authors (Sebastian Faulks, Nick Hornby, Zadie Smith) in the world. Or, take a walk along the river in the footsteps of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein? courses available English 148: British Film as Literature: Classic examples of English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish film are analysed, including Trainspotting, The Third Man, The Commitments, and The Remains of the Day. English 101: Advanced Composition / Writing about Literature: Students will be taught how to think critically and write essays on literary works. English 119: Introduction to creative writing, English 122: Novel Writing, English 127: Scriptwriting are available as independent studies. It may be possible to arrange other independent studies - previous courses have included British Literature before 1800, British Literature after 1800, and Contemporary British Literature.

Students are provided with their individual dorm rooms for five weeks. Half board meals are provided in the price of the program, Monday to Thursday.

Normally all breakfasts are in one of the college s stunning formal dining halls, with two dinners also being held. Students are able to experience dining in one of Cambridge s finest establishments. Previously, students have stayed at Girton College and Sidney Sussex College. About the professor Raymond Obstfeld is the author of over 45 published books of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as dozens of screenplays. His most recent works were both co-authored with basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabaar and both became New York Times bestsellers. Together they won the 2012 NAACP Image Award. Ray has enjoyed past programs so much that this will be his 11th time accompanying students abroad! He knows from past experience that studying abroad can have a huge impact on students, from influencing a choice of major to making friends for life. The Reach team are always on hand to help with any issue, from train timetables to pastoral support, restaurant recommendations to academic advice. activities and free-time A typical week at the Reach Study Abroad program includes classes in the morning, Monday to Thursday. In the afternoons, evenings and weekends, the Reach staff organise a variety of activities. In the past this has included Karaoke nights, punting on the river Cam, movie nights, picnics and croquet in addition to a lively sports scene of volleyball and as we say in the UK football (soccer). We also organize various day trips throughout the program to sights such as Oxford, Ely and the famous Bletchley Park, former home of the WWII Enigma code breakers, as immortalized in the film The Imitation Game. A weekend trip to London is also included in the program, where students are able to safely explore London and to take in all the sights of the capital such as the legendary British Museum, the majestic Houses of Parliament and the exciting nightlife of this vibrant, exciting city. Weekends are also a fantastic opportunity for students to travel independently. Reach staff are always on hand to help you organise your travel itinerary and assist you throughout your trip if the need occurs. flights, insurance and enrolment For each of our courses, students are able to book a place on a group flight from LAX to London Heathrow, and the return journey. Please note that the costs of these flights is not included in the course total. Should student choose to fly independently, airport transfers between London Heathrow and Cambridge cannot be guaranteed. All program participants are required to purchase short-term outbound study abroad medical insurance through an approved District insurance provider. Each of our courses is taught by a highly-experienced, tenured professor at Orange Coast, California. If you do not current attend Orange Coast College, enrolment is easy - just fill out an application on the OCC website! Our courses have their own registration dates, and the program leader will inform students of these closer to the departure dates.
