1 Seldens Landing Elementary PTA After-School Activities Program (ASAP) Spring 2017 Online registration will open at 8:00 p.m. on Sunday February 19, 2017 and will stay OPEN UNTIL Sunday March 5, 2017! Classes will only be on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday this session, (Chorus and Drama Club classes continue as usual) REGISTRATION : For the Spring 2017 session, online registration is required. You must pay by credit card via Pay Pal (Pay Pal account not required). Visit the Seldens Landing website at and click on the PTA drop-down menu and then PTA ASAP link to access full class information and the online form. A first-come, first-serve registration process will be used for all ASAP sessions. Online registration will open at 8:00 p.m. on February 19, 2017 and the new extended close time/date is at 8:00 p.m. Sunday March 5, If you do not receive payment confirmation from PayPal you are NOT registered. Please immediately seldensasap@aol.com as all unpaid registrations are routinely deleted. Fully completed registration forms with payment must be submitted and received by Sunday, February 26, LATE REGISTRATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE. Families will be sent an enrollment confirmation via before the start of each class. Please be sure the address you provide during registration is the you will read most frequently as this is the method we will use to communicate cancelled classes or confirmations throughout the session. Further communication will ONLY be made if there is a problem with your registration or if your child did not get into a class. DO NOT call the school for class placement confirmation. Make note of the dates of your child s activity, remind your child and plan accordingly. No further reminders will be sent home. Students are permitted to enroll in multiple classes at the time of initial registration. OTHER PAYMENT INFORMATION : Parents who owe fees from a prior session will not be eligible to register their children for new classes until payment is received. There will be no refunds once a child is placed into a class. MAKE-UP POLICY : After-school classes will NOT be held if Loudoun County Public Schools are closed. If there is inclement weather, classes held outdoors may be cancelled and parents will be notified by an that day. Every effort will be made to schedule a make-up class. However, if make-up classes cannot be scheduled in a timely manner, prorated refunds will NOT be issued. SESSION INFORMATION : All classes are six-week sessions and will have a one break during the week of Spring Break, April All classes will begin on FRIDAY MARCH 24, 2017 and will end Friday, May 12th (unless otherwise noted by your teacher/instructor). Please mark your calendars with your class dates once enrollment confirmation has been received. Students must be picked up by a designated adult at the class location no later than 3:45 p.m. It is imperative that children be picked up promptly; failure to do so may lead to the student being removed from the ASAP Class. Please note that Flag Football on Fridays will end at 3:30 pm. Class locations will be posted under the PTA ASAP tab on the SLES website as well as in the front hall the first week of classes as well as every day that there is an ASAP class. If your child cannot attend a class, you must call the school by 1:00 pm or send a note with your child s name, ASAP class and the date that the child will be absent. These classes are offered through the Seldens Landing Elementary PTA Fundraiser Program. Classes are offered after school hours at a time when health services are not available through the school. The school cannot provide health information to ASAP instructors. It is the responsibility of parents to notify instructors of any health or medical needs. Participants are expected to follow the LCPS Student Code of Conduct. We reserve the right to remove, for the remainder of the session, any student whose inappropriate behavior disrupts the program. If an ASAP class is cancelled, parents will be notified by 1:00 p.m. The school will follow the regular dismissal plan unless the parent notifies the school office of a change. 3 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS MONDAY: Coding Club (MEETS IN THE MORNING from 6:45-7:30 AM) - Grades 3-5: (Alex Springer-Post) Students will learn the basics of computer programming and will work together on a coding course designed by Code.Org. Students will complete one coding project as a result of their learning. School Newspaper - Grades 3-5 : (Alex Springer-Post) Ladies and Gentlemen, get it hot off the press! The school newspaper needs your help. Students will enjoy this creative and exciting class as they create authentic newspaper stories. As they are transformed into reporters and editors, the outcome will be to publish their own school newspaper. Various aspects of newspapers are covered; including parts of a newspaper, writing an article, reading and habits, advertisements, and layout and design techniques. Touching Heart (Grades 3-5) : ( Stacey Williams), our school counselor will be teaching this wonderful new class. Touching Heart is about Inspiring kids to have a giving heart. Do you want to make a difference in someone s life? Touching Heart is partnering with Mrs. Williams to bring you opportunities to make a difference. Together, we will take action to help others through service projects and will learn about the importance of compassion and giving. Using multiple teaching methods such as hands on activities, service projects, art projects, discussion, books, videos, and role playing, we are learning the importance of compassion and giving while taking action to help others. Upon completion of the program, you will walk away being inspired to continue to give back and empowered knowing you made a difference! CLASS DESCRIPTIONS TUESDAY: Drama Club: Drama Club is continued for Grades 2-5 for third and final part of the drama club session for 6 weeks! Those students who attended the Fall and Winter ASAP Drama Club with be automatically enrolled in the spring session. (This is not a new class and you must have been previously signed up for this class in the Fall to attend.) Art Club Jr. - Grades K-2 : (Mr. Loya) Class Description: Students in grades k-1 will have the opportunity to have fun getting creative with a variety of art-related media, including clay, collage, drawing, painting and more! *Creative Crafting - Grades 2-5 : (Mrs. Williams) Choose your brushes and sharpen your pencils because it's CREATIVE CRAFTING time. In this art class you will do a different art project each week--drawing, painting, and collage making. You ll never know what talents you have until you ve explored all the possibilities. Please note an additional fee of $20 for supplies should be paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class Extreme Sports P.E. - Grades 1-5 (Mr. Willingham) Who wants to play extreme PE games? Of course you do! "Extreme Sports PE" offers students an opportunity to play traditional games that all kids love! Games will include: Telephone Booth Tag, Star Wars Battle Ball, Capture the Flag, Skittles Tag, and many more! Girls Tech Coding Club (Alex Springer-Post)- Grades All girls are welcome to join the first all girls coding club at Seldens Landing. We will learn about careers in technology and learn coding skills using Made with Code. Brain Teasers and Mind Benders- Grades K -5: (Ms. Ruzanic) Want to challenge your brains AND have fun at the same time? Come on out and engage in fun, educational, brain challenging games! Some games are individual, while others have you competing against a number of different opponents. Games such as Rush Hour, Blokus, Mancala, Chocolate Fix, Squizzles, Tip Over and Izzi are just a few of the games to explore. A great time is sure to be had! Seldens Winter 2017 ASAP Page 3

4 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS WEDNESDAYS: Chorus Grades: 5 Meets Wednesdays at 7:00AM (5th Grade) : There are no sign ups for this class. This is to let parents know that Chorus continues as usual. Spanish 101- Grades K-5: (Mrs. Splett) Hola! the Spanish 101 Course is a fun, play-based class for Kindergarteners, First and Second grade children who have little or no background of the language. Students will begin to get in touch with the language by learning the basics. They will learn to introduce themselves, talk about their personalities traits and preferences, develop a basic vocabulary for everyday object and understand common phrases. All this through audiovisual media, interactive and hands-on activities, songs, games and dialogue practice that will give them the ability to get a basic understanding of the language and be able to start a basic conversation in Spanish. A foreign language is an excellent source to help children's development in many ways. The children's cognitive skill will improve together with their creative thinking. It helps them achieve greater confidence as they go along and their ability to communicate with people outside their language group gives them many enriched experiences. Girls Running Club - Grades 3-5: (Mrs. Rhodes) A non-competitive running, active, fun club for girls. This after school program will help girls to learn healthy eating habits and build strength and endurance through running, games and other cardiovascular exercises. Girls will set running goals and work to achieve them. The class will end with a Fun Run 5 K in the spring. Parents must sign up and pay for this race on their own, details will be given at a later date. Boys Running Club - Grades 3-5: (Mrs. Sweeney) A non-competitive running, active, fun club for boys. This after school program will help boys to learn healthy eating habits and build strength and endurance through running, games and other cardiovascular exercises. Girls will set running goals and work to achieve them. The class will end with a Fun Run 5 K in the spring. Parents must sign up and pay for this race on their own, details will be given at a later date. Minute to Win It - Grades K -5: (Mrs.Brosnan/Ms. Murphy) Minute to win it is a club for students who like to have fun and compete as teams in a different challenge each week. The club members will participate in challenges that need to be completed in under a minute using household items. The challenges are exciting and sometimes difficult to do, and really fun to watch! At the conclusion of the club we will declare the winner by using a point system each week of the challenges that have been completed. The club will include a $10 supply fee to purchase the items for the challenge and the rewards at the end of the club. Please pay this directly to the teacher the first day of class. Clay Club Grades 2-5 : (Mr. Loya) Students in grades 2-5 will be able to create three-dimensional art works using various clay-related media in the art room, including earth clay, Model Magic and Plasti-clay. The instructor will present a project each session, and students will have the choice to create something similar, or something completely different, using the materials provided during that particular session. Silver Knights Chess Club - Grades 2-5 : Chess clubs split time between lesson and play. Lessons range from learning the rules to advanced tournament strategies, depending on the children. State and national champions have come from our programs, but most of our students are just looking to have fun! Play time is structured to pair each student against an opponent of similar skill. 5 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS FRIDAY: Art Club Senior - Grades 3-5: Students in grades 3-5 will have the opportunity to create and experiment with a variety of art materials in the art classroom. We will be working on paintings, drawings, sculpture, collage and more. Readers Theatre - Grades 1-5: Reader's Theater is reading a story aloud, like a play, without memorization, props or a stage. Club members will be assigned a character role and read their part with expression, meaning and enthusiasm. Repeated readings will provide the practice of "Repeated Guided Oral Reading" and is a proven method to build reading fluency. Reader's theater will give club members an outlet for creative expression and a safe platform for building reading confidence which translates into success in many other areas of their lives. Strong reading and comprehension skills are the cornerstone for a successful educational experience. Reader s theater is a well-known fluency building strategy that engages and entertains students while they learn and improve their skills. Flag Football - Grades 3-5: Huddle Up and get ready for Flag Football to become an instant classic. Players will get a chance to be running backs, wide receivers, defensive ends, and cornerbacks. Learn to pass, catch, run routes and punt like the pros! Please note that this class ends at 3:30 pm! Please make plans to pick up your child accordingly. *Cupcake Creativity - Grades 3-5 : (Mrs. Sateri) In this fun and exciting class, we will take on a different cupcake challenge each week, creating some very unique and tasty treats for your child to bring home to share! Food items in this class may contain nuts, soy, dairy and wheat and will most definitely contain lots of sugar! You have been warned! ;-) Parents of children with food allergies should be advised that items may contain soy, wheat, eggs, nuts and dairy. Please note an additional fee of $25 for supplies should be paid directly to the instructor on the first day of class. USTA Tennis - Grades The United States Tennis Association, Mid-Atlantic Section (USTA MAS) proudly presents TGA Premier Youth Tennis, the first and only national tennis enrichment program in the country. Students will develop tennis skills utilizing kid-friendly equipment in a play-to-learn style that gets them rallying and having fun right away. In addition, students will learn relevant enrichment skills such as sportsmanship, math, science, technology, history, and more as they advance through our five-level program. All students receive a wristband, a hat, and a student handbook. Program is taught by USTA-trained coaches and all tennis equipment is provided. Seldens Winter 2017 ASAP Page 5
