1 February/March 2017 Volume 23.7 SPRING WOOD NEWS Volleyball Spring Wood is proud of its student athletes! Volleyball is wrapping up this week and our 3 teams represented the school well.

2 2 SPRING WOOD NEWS The National Anthem was sung at our last home volleyball game on March 13. Spring Wood Students Beautify the School summer. Each window encompasses different musical instruments as well as silhouetted figures in varying dance poses to symbolize our expressive interpretation of the arts in our school. The window paintings also serve an added function beyond beauty! They provide a buffer from any external distractions for the band members as they practice and play hard to create the band performances that all of us get to enjoy here at Spring Wood Middle School! We hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we have enjoyed creating them! The Outsiders On March 8th, 7th grade had its first family night in the form of a 1960s Sock-Hop. A night of reminiscing about the "good-ole-days" started with a classic 1960s tradition: a soda bar. As our seventh-grade teachers embraced the cultural idea of the youth of the day, students and their families seemed thoroughly impressed with the immersion of the culture of the time. Following our soda bar, we opened the floor to teaching students how to do 1960s dances, led by Ms. Vrettos and Ms. Harris. Such moves as the Hully Gully, Watsi, and a cultural reference in the Sammy Davis were taught to students and parents. Ending our night, a dance-off commenced with such parents as Mr. Sourwine entertaining the crowd and students such as Alejandro Bahena and Niko Osorio busting out their moves. As students have been reading the Outsiders through the month of February and are currently working on their narratives, it is important to let the students immerse themselves into the culture that our Greasers, Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally, lived in. We hope you enjoy some of the pictures from that very enjoyable evening: When you get the chance, walk past the band room and see the beautifully painted windows that the Art Staff (Mrs. Scoles 8th grade enrichment students) are working on! The design was generated by the students and incorporates the passing of four seasons as we progress through the school year. We enter school during the fall and exit at the beginning of

Music in Our Schools Once again our Concert and Symphonic Bands provided a wonderful evening of music for our community on Thursday, March 16. Thank you Mr. Hellyer and band students.

Bus Information Please remind your child that anyone taking the late bus (only available on scheduled days) should inform the driver of the neighborhood in which he/she lives, as he/she gets on the bus. The school has one late bus to cover the entire District area and the driver needs to formulate a route as the bus leaves the school. Parents/guardians should realize that children taking the late bus may take a while to get home, due to the amount of area the bus must cover. District Web Site For more information about our schools, please visit our web site: On our site, you can find information about the District and the individual schools, the District budget, and contact information for offices and staff 8th Graders and Parents of 8th Grade Students Students need to remember that attendance at the promotion ceremony, May 24, 5:00 PM, at Lake Park West Campus gymnasium, is considered a privilege, and is therefore, one that must be earned. Eighth grade students must earn a cumulative grade point average of at least 1.75, at least a 1.75 grade point average for the third trimester, pass the Constitution tests, and not have any unpaid fees/fines in order to attend the promotion ceremony and receive a diploma. Students need to be aware that student behavior leading up to the actual ceremony can also have an impact on this privilege. Using the gymnasium will allow us to provide families 6 tickets, so families should start considering who will be able to attend. Parents, please stress to your 8 th graders that the promotion ceremony is important to you! Please let them also know that you expect their behavior to be excellent during these last two months of school. If your child earns a suspension from school, an inschool suspension, or 3 detentions during these last months, your child will lose the privilege of participating in the end-of-year boat trip that many of you paid for. If your child loses the boat trip, he/she also loses the money that was paid to make it possible for him/her. We want this time to be full of wonderful memories. Student anxiety and excitement rises as the year comes to an end and they really need all of us to encourage and guide them. District Musical We are very excited that students in 5 th through 8 th grade are having this wonderful opportunity to show their talents this year in the District s first musical
