This gives teachers and students an opportunity to build relationships with a wider range of students than they would typically connect with in their permanent classes, building a stronger sense of community in our school. Today we have sent home a letter with each student to inform you of their class placement for next year. On Monday, students will report to their new classroom and teacher. THE DOT SCHOOL WIDE THEME This year, our staff decided to use a school wide theme during the first week of school to set the stage for a positive year of growth and learning for each student in our community. We focused on the book, The Dot, by Peter Reynolds. Each teacher read the story to their group and engaged in discussions around the book s theme of having a growth mindset as well as the virtues of perseverance and kindness towards others. Teachers also centered a variety of other learning opportunities on The Dot theme in the areas of art, technology and writing. You will find a variety of dot-inspired artwork in our halls and classrooms. As a school, we would like to celebrate International Dot Day on Friday, September 14. We invite students to come dressed in dotty clothing inspired by this book as we celebrate this day. I m looking forward to seeing polka-dots of all kinds next Friday. 2 FAMILY BBQ/MEET THE TEACHER NIGHT - THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 th On Thursday, September 20 th our PAC will be hosting a Family BBQ (food available for a small cost) from 5:00-6:00 pm. Teachers will then be available in their classrooms from 6:00-7:00 for a Meet and Greet. We hope you will drop in to touch base and meet your child s teacher. PICTURE DAY School pictures are scheduled for Monday, September 24 th starting at 9:00 am. Picture reminder notices will be sent home prior to picture day. Do not send payment; proofs will be provided to you in a couple of weeks. You will then make your choice of background, image and desired package and return the form with your payment at that time. ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY As we begin a new year it is time to stress, once again, the importance of regular attendance and arriving on time for the school day. These are important habits for your children to have! Research says the following: "Children who miss too much school in kindergarten and 1st grade often struggle to read proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, and by 6th grade chronic absence is a key predictor of dropping out. Please remember to give the school a call at if your child is will be late arriving to school or will be absent for the day. TERRY FOX RUN / COIN DRIVE THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 th Our Terry Fox Run is scheduled for the afternoon on Thursday, September 27 th beginning at 1:30 pm in the gym with a short Terry Fox video and then stretching in preparation for the run. Students will prepare and practice with their teachers over the next week. In support of the Terry Fox Foundation we will hold a fundraising coin drive throughout the week of the 24 th to 28 th ; nickels on Monday, dimes on Tuesday, quarters on Wednesday, loonies on Thursday and twoonies (or any other denominations) on Friday. All donations will be forwarded to the foundation in support of cancer research. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO MAN CHECK POINTS We require some parent helpers to main checkpoints and ensure student safety along the route on Thursday, September 27 th for the Terry Fox Run. Please contact the office if you are available on the 27 th from approximately 1:45-2:30 pm to help. GLENWOOD STAFFING Each new school year brings with it some changes to our staffing. Please check backpacks for several important items including: Student Information Verification form, Freedom of Information form, Community Walks Permission form for the year, Aboriginal Program form, and Fruit and Vegetable Program Allergy form. Please take time to look over all these forms, make any corrections necessary on the Student Verification form, complete the Community Walks Permission form, Fruit & Vegetable Allergy form, and the Aboriginal Declaration form also if applicable, and return them to the school at your earliest convenience. SCHOOL CASH ONLINE School Cash Online is the online payment system adopted by the Langley School District. The purpose is to offer parents a more simple, secure, and convenient online format for paying school and field trip fees, while minimizing the number of cheques and the amount of cash that flow through the office. If you have not already done so, we encourage families to go to and register your child(ren). You will require their birthdate and student ID number. If you do not know your child s student number, please contact the school office. STUDENT PLANNERS All Gr. 2 7 students will be receiving school planners. These books are an excellent means of communication for you, your child and the teacher. If you have not done so already, we ask that you please send payment of $5.00; payment may be made online at LATES AND ABSENCES Please remember to call the school to report any absences or late arrivals. The answering machine will record a message if you call before Ms. Hamilton arrives at 8:15 am. All students who arrive late must report to the office to let Ms. Hamilton know they are here. BUS STUDENTS The official bus zone is on 208 th at the south end of the school on the east side of the Heritage Building. Students will line up inside the fenced area until the bus arrives. Drivers picking up students are asked to please respect this bus zone. ARRIVAL & PICK UP Each morning the students are asked to line up outside their classroom door. The teacher will greet them at the door when the bell rings. Students in room 18 & 25 are also to line up outside their classroom doors (in the front alcove) but are reminded to be particularly aware of the vehicles parking and driving through our front parking lot. An early bell will ring to bring the students in if it is raining too hard outside. Please remember to keep the drive-through/pick-up lanes in the parking lot clear, especially at the front entrance of the school. This is a pull-through drop-off lane so please do not leave your vehicle unattended. Students have been asked to wait for their rides in between the two buildings. PARKING/SUPERVISION A reminder to parents, our parking lot is a busy place so please drive slowly and look for other cars pulling out or students crossing. The area to the south of the parking lot (along 208 St. before the stop sign) is for buses and is a

4 No Parking area. Parents are welcome to park on the road along the north field or in the gravel parking lot at the north end of the school. Again, supervision is outside fifteen minutes before and after school. COMMUNICATION Communication is an integral part of what makes a school tick. The Student Planners (grades 2-7) are an excellent tool to send messages back and forth between teachers and parents. If you ever have any concerns or worries, please do not hesitate to talk your child s teacher or come directly to the office to speak with Mrs. Redekop. Glenwood is a family school and we need to work together to keep it that way! UTENSILS - STUDENT LUNCHES Please remember to include utensils in your child s lunch if you are sending something that requires a spoon or fork. We do have a small supply of plastic utensils available at the office if you forget to include them, but we cannot supply utensils on a daily basis for students. FILTERED WATER STATION If you are not already aware - the school has a filtered water filling station so that students can fill water bottles. As an alternative to sending a juice box consider sending a refillable water bottle. The station is located outside the main office.
