Summer work ongoing throughout BPSD Renovations and minor construction projects are taking place throughout the Bartlesville Public School District this summer through the use of 2007 bond funds. At Bartlesville High School, approximately $1.2 million in improvements are underway. The projects are aimed at improving efficiency and updating older facilities throughout the BHS campus. The largest project of the summer will involve re-tiling the floor throughout the main building, the annex, and Custer stadium. The new tile will replace the previous aging floor and allow flooring throughout the high school campus to be more uniform. Replacement of chalkboards with marker boards is also underway throughout the high school campus. This will help increase functionality for teachers and staff with the use of marker boards as opposed to older chalk- SUMMER- Continued to Page now on twitter The Bartlesville Public School District has a newly created twitter account which you are encouraged to follow. The name to follow As the account gets up and running, it will be used for various functions. Uses of the account may include announcements of school closings or delays, upcoming district events, district updates and other important information pertinent to the Bartlesville Public School District and the Bartlesville Community. With the reach of social media growing drastically, it is the belief of the BPSD that every avenue of communication be used to keep people informed. The BPSD views twitter as a great way to get out important information. As a reminder, the BPSD also has a Facebook page that is updated regularly. The Facebook page will allow you to view upcoming events, pictures and view the latest edition of The Bruin each week.

2 Freedom Fest set for July 4 in downtown B Ville Downtown Bartlesville will once again play host to the annual Independence Day celebration known as Freedom Fest. The event will be held on Wednesday July 4 from 6p.m. to 9:45p.m. Fireworks will follow the conclusion of events at approximately 9:45p.m. An annual celebration of Independence Day, Freedom Fest will have a variety of activities for the whole family. There will be live music as well as an array of games for all ages. Participants 16 and older can take part in carnival-type games with the chance to win a prize. Games geared toward the younger audience will also be present. The Red, White and Blue kid s parade will take place once again this year. Children are encouraged to wear patriotic attire and show it off in a small parade. The parade will begin at 7:30p.m. Participants must check in before 7p.m. at the Chamber Depot to participate. The Air National Guard will also do a fly-over done by the 138th Fighter Wing. American Legion Post 105 and Army National Guard color teams will do a presentation of the colors. The annual summer event will have various activities and events aimed at allowing children to have a great time. The event will take place throughout the main grounds of Woolaroc. Kidsfest at Woolaroc Despite the event, the price of admission will remain the same to all Woolaroc visitors. The prices are $10.00 for ages 12 through 64, $8.00 for 65 and older and free to those guests who are under the age of 12. For more information on the event please visit

3 Free summer meal program continues The Bartlesville Public School District would like to remind students and parents that a free summer meal program is ongoing throughout the summer. The program started June 4 and will conclude on July 20. The program runs Monday through Friday and provides breakfast and lunch daily. Breakfast is served from 8:30a.m to 9:30a.m. Lunch is served from 11a.m. to 1p.m. There are four locations where meals are being served this summer. The locations are Hoover Elementary, Jane Phillips Elementary, Wilson Elementary and Central Middle School. The program requires no registration, application or qualification and it is open to children ages one through 18. Not Afraid of Hope benefit to take place Saturday Photo by Laci Lynn/Special to The Bruin Caitlyn Caughell and Rickey Kraemer share a moment together. The Not Afraid of Hope benefit show will be taking place at the Bartlesville Community Center this Saturday, June 23 at 7p.m. Bartlesville High School student Laci Lynn is organizing the show with all proceeds going to benefit Rickey Kraemer. Kraemer, the husband of 2005 BHS graduate Caitlyn Caughell, was in a serious motorcycle accident on March 17. Tickets to the show are $5.00 and will be available at the door. Donations are also being accepted through a memorial fund set up at Arvest bank. The name of the fund is the Richard J Kraemer Support Trust. Performers confirmed to be a part of the show include Britney and David Caughell, Life Church Praise Band, Kathy Stewart and Celeste Barrette, Inspirations Dance Studio7 Tap Dancers, Diana Farris, BHS Show Choir, CMT Alumni Cast and Sarah Jane Grisham who recently won the title of National American Oklahoma Miss. 7 Former Bruin QB named assistant football coach Jason Aubrey, a 2005 Bartlesville High School graduate, will make his return to Bartlesville and help coach the Bruin football team. Aubrey, a former quarterback for the BHS, will serve as an assistant coach as well as a teacher in the Bartlesville Public School District. He was a SUMMER- Continued from page 1 boards. Additionally, previous renovations left some aging science labs in the main high school building untouched. This summer, the old rooms are being renovated to allow for everyday classroom use. The process will involve removal of old sinks, gas outlets, vent hoods, counters and science desks that remained in former science labs located within the main building. Two of the old chemistry labs will be turned into a large computer lab for the use of business classes. Two structures on the BHS campus will be razed including the small greenhouse located on top of the 1954 building annex and the 1963 auxiliary building which housed the Bruin Brilliance program. The Bruin Brilliance program will be moved to room 004 in the ground level of the annex. The old library, now a large computer lab, will have a portable dividing wall installed allowing for the division of the room. This will allow for more flexibility when using the computer lab for instruction and testing. One of the most noticeable updates of the summer will be the removal of the Senior High School lettering on the Northwest corner of the main high school building. The words Senior High School will be replaced with Bartlesville High School. The new lettering will match the lettering used for the entrance to the Fine Arts Center. Another summer project at BHS involves the addition of a set of bleachers for the BHS band at Custer stadium. The bleachers will be located in the north end zone and allow the band to move from the visitor side of the stadium to their own space. Most other large schools in the state of Oklahoma currently have this set up for band members. This project was recently approved by the Bartlesville Public two year starter for the Bruins before graduating in Aubrey went on to play college football and graduate from Tabor College. Aubrey was an assistant at Tabor until recently accepting his new post with the Bruins. School District Board of Education and has yet to get underway. District wide, 47 classrooms and two libraries are receiving much needed carpet replacement. Along with new carpet, fresh coats of paint are being applied to various locations in the district. Motion detectors are being installed throughout BPSD buildings in hallways, conference rooms, restrooms, classrooms, libraries and office space. The Senior High School wording on the side of BHS will be replaced with Bartlesville High School. Motion detectors allow the district to be more efficient as lights will turn off automatically when no motion is detected for a certain period of time. Along with the projects mentioned, there are also other minor updates going on throughout the district. It is anticipated that most, if not all projects will be completed in time for the start of the school year. Projects taking place this summer are being funded through the 2007 bond issue. Without the funds from the 2007 bond issue none of these projects would have been possible. It important to note that minor renovations and updates throughout the summers allow the Bartlesville Public School District to continue to operate efficiently and provide the best learning environment possible for students. Without bond money, the summer projects would not be taking place.

8 school year calendar available on BPSD website Despite the summer recess, those looking to learn more about the upcoming school year can go to the Bartlesville Public School District s website to look at important dates. Displayed on the front page of the website, the calendar is listed just under the scroll of important announcements at the top of the webpage. The calendar will allow both parents and students to get a preview of what the academic year will look like. The school year will officially begin on Wednesday August 15 as students attend the first day of classes. The first school holiday will take place on Monday September 3 as a result of Labor Day. October will be fall break for students, with October 17 being classified as a professional in-service day for teachers. Thanksgiving break will be November Winter Break is scheduled from December 20- January 1.
