4 LAL TORBAY LAL was established in Torbay in 1980 and became a recognised Cambridge CELTA Teacher Training Centre in In the UK, LAL operates Adult language courses and residential Young Learner Summer Schools and also has a school in Twickenham, London. LAL delivers courses to non-native English speakers worldwide through a network of wholly owned schools, partner schools and other institutions. Teacher Training at LAL Torbay Over the last 2 decades LAL has successfully trained hundreds of native-level English speakers to teach English to students of all ages. In addition, we are experts in developing the skills of experienced teachers through the delivery of our blended DELTA offer and short teacher training refresher courses for non-native English speaking teachers. We are also able to offer career advice to newly qualified teachers and help them find their first important job either in the UK or abroad. Why take a Teacher Training course in Torbay? Paignton, on the south coast of Devon, is a great place to train to be a teacher. The quiet, relaxed atmosphere is ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in their lesson plans and teaching theory, plus accommodation can be within walking distance of the school. And when not studying you can take a walk along the seafront which is minutes from the school. The Train2Teach training room at LAL Torbay has recently been refurbished with coffee and snack facilities so trainees can continue to study and discuss together during their lunch break. Course overview For native-level English speakers: Cambridge CELTA Cambridge DELTA For non-native speakers: International Teacher Training Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Accommodation We can arrange accommodation with a local family or, if preferred, in our student residence. We can recommend hotels and B&Bs all within walking and public transport distance of the school. 4 LAL Torbay Teacher Training Courses 2019

7 THE ENGLISH TEACHING INDUSTRY & JOBS ABROAD Career advice Meten International Education: An LAL partner offering employment in China An important part of the Cambridge CELTA course is preparing trainees for their career. Therefore at LAL each CELTA course contains a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) session focused on finding jobs after the course, both abroad and in the UK. Jobs abroad LAL understands that for many new teachers a CELTA in Torbay is their first step to a new career teaching outside the UK. We have therefore developed strategic partnerships with language schools in other countries who are looking for CELTA qualified teachers. One of our partners is Meten International Education Ltd who have over 120 English language schools across China. So, after completing your CELTA in Torbay, we can organise interviews for jobs in China and elsewhere. A truly global industry Over 550,000 international students come to the UK every year to learn English*. This, combined with language schools in every corner of the world, makes our industry a truly global one. * English UK data (englishuk.com) teachertraining.lalschools.com LAL Torbay Teacher Training Courses
8 CELTA Start teaching English with our most popular teacher training course. Our most popular teacher training course is the Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) which is recognised all over the world. Thousands of people each year choose CELTA to open up a whole world of exciting English language teaching opportunities. It can provide you with the skills, knowledge and hands on practice to follow a rewarding career in teaching anywhere in the world. At LAL Torbay we will give you the support and guidance you need to help you to achieve this. Why take a CELTA course? As well as helping you to gain the skills and knowledge you will need as a TEFL teacher, there are other benefits; the CELTA certificate is one of the few teaching qualifications that is recognised worldwide. It is accepted by British Council and English UK accredited language schools internationally as well as by the voluntary sector (e.g. VSO). It is also accredited at level 5 on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Who can take a CELTA course? CELTA is designed for people with little or no previous teaching experience. It provides you with the basic skills, knowledge and techniques that you need to start teaching English and aims to improve your confidence in the classroom. The CELTA course is perfect for those looking for a career change, who want to live and work in fascinating places around the world or who just want to teach whilst taking a gap year. CELTA can give you the training you need to adjust to a dynamic new profession. However, if you do have experience, the course will give you new teaching methodologies and techniques. For teachers without a formal qualification, it means the opportunity to further develop your teaching skills and help you secure a better teaching position. CELTA is a very intense course but also very interesting and a great way to begin your career in teaching English as a second language. Input sessions and tutor guidance help you all the way through the course. I can honestly say that I'm very satisfied with my CELTA training here in LAL. Sofia Papadimitropoulou, Senior Teacher LAL London 8 LAL Torbay Teacher Training Courses 2019
9 How will I be assessed? Assessment is continuous, based on six hours of teaching practice and four written assignments. You need to pass both elements to be awarded the CELTA Certificate. 10 DELTA Continue to develop your English teaching skills. The DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) course is a training course for experienced teachers. The modular DELTA is designed to be flexible to suit the varying needs of teachers; it consists of three modules which can be taken in any order and at any time and are separately certificated. LAL Torbay runs a semi-intensive course for Module 2. The course consists of: a 6-week intensive block in January/ February, with some external assessment possible in March. We also run an online Module 1 Exam course and will take Module 3 candidates on application. Why take a DELTA course? The DELTA course will help you to deepen your understanding of the principles and practice of teaching the English Language to adults and enable you to examine your current practices and beliefs. You will then be able to apply the results of your learning to your current teaching position and be eligible for more senior roles. Who can take a DELTA course? The DELTA course is for experienced teachers wishing to improve their existing skills and develop new techniques to progress their career; it not only demonstrates proof of ability, but also a commitment to the profession. DELTA is open to English teachers from all over the world, but all participants must have native English speaker proficiency. The DELTA helped me to develop as a teacher gain deeper knowledge and insight, and has broadened my horizons. The course was tough but well-organised and well worth it as it has given me much more of a profound understanding of what it means to be a teacher. 11 What does the DELTA course involve? The DELTA consists of 3 modules. The timed and submitted mock exam (with feedback) ensures candidates are prepared for the Module One Exam (Papers 1 and 2), which are usually taken in June. (Cambridge has a December exam date as well). Module 2 Developing professional practice by: Deepening and applying your understanding of language and skills Examining effects of different contexts on learning English Managing, supporting and maximising learning Focusing and reflecting on your own classroom practice Evaluating different approaches and resources The input sessions will be a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, group activities, workshops, and discussions. You will also need to set aside about 200 hours for reading, research and assignment writing. Assessment is by written assignments and teaching practice (five lessons) during January, February and March. Module 3 Extending practice and focusing on a specialist option. This will depend completely on which area of ELT you are interested in (e.g. Business English, teaching Young Learners, etc.) and can be taken at any time. It is assessed by means of an extended written assignment. Application process When we receive your application, we will send you preinterview tasks to complete and this will be followed by an interview. This will give you an opportunity to meet us and to see the school. It also gives us a good idea whether this rigorous and demanding course is for you.
