5 Trends in Higher Education Trends in Key Markets 2016/17: o China o Saudi Arabia o South Korea o Japan o Taiwan o SE Asia o Brazil o Colombia

6 Enrollment Trends - General Slower growth and declines in the key source markets o Overall numbers up 3.4%, however new student enrolments declined by 3.3%; first decline in 12 years. o China up +6.8%, however growth is slowing down. o India up +12.3%, however mostly due to OPT. o South Korea down -3.4%. o Saudi Arabia down -14.2%. o Brazil down %.

7 Enrollment Trends - General Student enrolments to Asia are growing o Asian higher education systems are steadily strengthening, to the point where several universities in China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia now rank among the world s best. o A growing number of students in these countries are choosing to stay within the region to study, and students from other countries including African ones are adding Asian destinations to their list of attractive options.

8 Enrollment Trends - General Aggressive internationalization strategies by Canada and Australia o A challenging global economy and a less welcoming policy environment in the U.S. are pushing international students to look at studying in Canada and Australia.

9 Enrollment Trends - General Intense competition in the key source markets and development of Pathway Programs in the region o To recruit more international students in the competitive landscape, many HE providers around the globe have expanded their relationships directly with recruitment agents; they have developed marketing platforms where prospective international students are able to access and interact in their own languages.

10 Enrollment Trends China Increased presence of Pathway providers. More active in-country recruitment activity by universities and colleges. Top universities are very active in China, some of which are lowering GPA requirements, offering more scholarships and higher commissions. Students are studying English in China for longer periods of time. In-country pathway programs are increasing.

11 Enrollment Trends Saudi Arabia A large focus on project-based recruitment efforts. Many organizations are reaching out to educational institutions and/or agents to set up in-country English language and professional training programs. Enhanced scholarship policies requiring students to secure a minimum IELTS/TOEFL score prior to study abroad placements. Higher academic quality of students; based on performance.

12 Enrollment Trends South Korea Extremely competitive market; educational companies are paying agents the highest commissions in the industry. Increased presence of pathway providers in the region. South Korea remains one of the countries with the largest percentage of students studying Fine and Applied Arts abroad. Due to high unemployment, Korean students enrolling in vocational programs; looking to immigrate to destination countries. Culinary has become one of the most sought-out majors followed by Hospitality.

13 Enrollment Trends Japan Overall, the number of students interested in studying abroad to acquire international experience is increasing. o The most popular programs are short-term study tours of less than a month. Many students are more interested in intercultural experience than learning English. The age group is getting younger. o Increasing number of high schools are developing their own study abroad programs to tap into this segment. Challenged by shrinking youth population, many private universities are investing in developing an in-house study abroad programs to entice potential students. The high tuition cost prohibits many from enrolling in US universities.

14 Enrollment Trends Taiwan Conditional admissions is still popular with Taiwanese students, however increased presence of Pathway providers absorbing market share. Due to the economic challenges (pension reform), parents are reluctant to invest significant amount of resources in their children s education. Traditionally Taiwan has been a graduate market, but there is an increase in undergraduate applications to 4-year universities and 2+2 programs via community colleges. More universities have adjusted their admission requirements and recruit directly in the market.

15 Enrollment Trends SE Asia Canada on the rise: About 15,000 Vietnamese are studying in Canada as of March Compares to 31,613 Vietnamese students in the US. Increase in study options and pathways providers. Vietnamese economy growing quickly while Thailand s economy is slowing down. Visa refusal rate increasing both in Thailand and Vietnam.

16 Enrollment Trends Brazil Extreme competition with English language schools. Political instability, economic situation and currency fluctuation negatively impacting the region. Will the election of the new president stabilize the economy? Pathway providers investing significant resources in the market.

17 Enrollment Trends Colombia Highly competitive market and many companies have investing in hiring local sales representatives. Currency devaluation had a negative impact, but Colombia Peso has gained value. Canada # 1 destination at the moment. Pathway providers investing significant resources in the market.

24 ELS Kuwait In May of 2017 The Ministerial Decree of a 5.0 IELTS requirement was mandated by the MOE s current Minister of Education: HE Professor Hamid Alazmi Through KU s ELS Center, ELS will deliver IELTS Prep courses and Administer IELTS tests in collaboration with KU, Amid East & The British Council ELS will collaborate with the various government & private organizations: KU, MOE, MOE K through 12, MOH, MOD, MOI, KPC (Kuwait Petroleum Company Mother of all oil companies) to name a few; for the delivery, execution, & development of the English Language in The State of Kuwait.
