1 FALL 2012 We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the fall session, with some fantastic new programs in which your child/ren can participate. We are proud of the superb lineup of staff hired to lead your children in our many lunch and after school programs. We make every effort to open each child s mind to new and fun ways of learning. Some of the popular courses continuing for the fall session are: Jewelry Making & Kangoo Jumps. We are thrilled to welcome Enrique Welcher, a 9th degree black belt, who will be teaching both Karate and Middle School Self Defense. In addition, we also have an after school Tae Kwon Do class for the younger students. We have a wonderful new instructor who will be teaching a multi sport class on Fridays after school for grade SK- 1, as well as basketball for grades 2-5. Be aware that all of our classes have a maximum number of students that can be taken for each session. This is for the safety and well being of your children. Please take note of these numbers, and register early, our classes fill up very fast and we cannot accommodate extra children beyond our maximum. ALL CLASSES ARE ON A FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS. Lastly, we want to introduce and welcome Jodi Mandell (jodimandel@sympatico.ca) & Jennifer Galet (jennifergalet@rogers.com), who will be taking over the coordinators positions from us starting in the fall. We have had a productive and busy 3 years, which we have thoroughly enjoyed! Please contact them in the fall with any questions you may have about the programs. 4 Yoga Relax, stretch and grow! Rishma (full certified Yoga teacher) teaches yoga in an animated manner that kids LOVE. Age appropriate yoga postures help children develop strength, flexibility, balance and motor coordination. Other activities include creative movement, circle games and animal sounds which lead to increased concentration, reduced stress and inner peace. A safe, non-competitive environment is created for optimal learning. Cost: $150 Reference: YOGA100 Karate Enrique Welcher, a 9th degree black belt, will be teaching our lunch hour Karate. Enrique brings over 30 years of teaching experience to this class. The class will start with the basics of karate, and move onward from there. Enrique's vast knowledge and passion about Martial Arts makes him an excellent teacher for your children. Date/Time: Tuesdays, Oct Dec. 18 Reference: KAR100 FALL 2012 Lunch Programs Chess Looking for something to stimulate your brain over the lunch hour? Join us over some chess pieces and boards and learn new moves, or master old ones. For all levels who are interested in improving their game and theory. Other board games may be introduced as well. An inexpensive chess set is required every week. Cost: $135 Reference: CHESS101 Middle School Self Defense (for boys and girls in grades 6-8) RHA welcomes Enrique Welcher, a 9th degree black belt to teach our self defence course. Learn practical self-defence techniques to handle any situation. Defend against the most common grabs and holds, and improve your shape and confidence! Through a variety of co-ordination, balance and strength activities, students will learn the basics of Self- Defence. Much emphasis is stressed on discipline and focus. Reference: MSD100 - Module 3 (for boys and girls in grades 4 & 5) This valuable program focuses on teaching effective presentation skills to children. Its aim is to instill the skill, experience and confidence needed to speak successfully before a group. The program is founded on the principles of developing Visual (body language), Vocal and Verbal (content) excellence. Video and audiotaping is used to enhance the children s awareness of what they do well and where they could improve. Students will learn basic drawing skills in a constructive step by step environment, also how to create their own fun characters and creatures. All students will leave the course with a portfolio filled with drawing exercises and cartooning based projects. Cost: $150 Reference: CAR100 Glee This lunchtime program will enable you to rehearse popular songs (Top 40, Rock, Hip Hop, Pop, etc.). Students will have the opportunity to learn, enhance and develop their own voice. Over the course of the program each child will gain an understanding of basic harmonies, vocal techniques, and the process of creating a performance. We will feature group numbers,duets and solos. Taught by singer, performer and vocal coach, Michelle Newman. 5 Kangoo Jumps - Level 2 (for boys and girls in grades 5-8) Teaching children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle has never been easier. Using Kangoo Jumps within the school environment will energize and motivate your child. Students will be able to have fun, while getting fit. Kangoo Jumps helps to improve balance, stability and co-ordination. Children will gain improved listening skills, and a healthy self image. Your child will beg for more! The Academy s cooking class gives the students a chance to partake in the fun-to-cook projects, kitchen safety, nutrition, and delicious and fun foods! Students will also get to enjoy their delicious creations which makes for a yummy after-school snack! Date/Time: Tuesdays, Oct Dec. 18 Cost: $180 Reference: COOKTUE101 Min. 7, Max. 12 students required Tae Kwon Do (for boys : and girls in grades JK-2) Through a variety of co-ordination, balance and strength activities, students will learn the basics of Tae Kwon Do. The Academy s cooking class gives the students a chance to partake in fun-to-cook projects, kitchen safety, nutrition, and delicious and fun foods! Students will also get to enjoy their delicious creations which makes for a yummy after-school snack! Cost: $180 Reference: COOKMON100 Min. 7, Max 12. students required Legend Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Ping Pong (for boys and girls in grades 1-5) Join instructor Paul as he teaches students the fun and exciting game of Ping Pong. Students will learn the rules and then put their new skills to use in friendly Ping Pong matches with each other. Cost: $120 Reference: PNG100 Min. 4, Max. 8 students required School Play Wizard of Oz (for boys and girls in grades 2-6) This is a casting call to come out and take part in the musical production of The Wizard of Oz! Rebecca Sutin will be taking our students to new heights with this amazing play. Come be Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, The Lion, and many, many other parts as we bring this play to life on stage! Cost: $200 (includes 2 tickets to see the play!) Reference: WIZ100 Min. 12, Max 18 students required Guitar A well-rounded introduction to the guitar and its uses in various musical contexts, will help students develop a sense of musical understanding and performance, while engaging them in fun and creative activities. Guitar lessons for Beginners and Intermediates. Each participant is required to bring his/her own guitar. Guitars can be rented from some retailers (approx. $20 - $35 per month). Cost: $230 Reference: MUSIC100 Min. 2, Max. 3 students Basketball Join instructor Ron as he teaches students the basic skills of the sport. Whether your athlete is a beginner or advanced player, the class will challenge them to improve their skills in a fun environment. Drills will help improve balance, footwork, ball handling, shooting, passing and rebounding. Students will then split into teams to put their skills to use. Let the games begin! Reference: BASK100 Min. 6, Max. 15 students required Mixed Media (for boys and girls in grades 1-5) We ll begin the term by learning some fundamental drawing skills through observing still life objects. Then students will begin to transform their drawings into unique and exciting pieces of art by experimenting with pastel, charcoal, pencil crayon, watercolour and collage. Creative minds will be expanding! Cost: $170 Reference: ARTS100 Multi Sport (for boys and girls in grades SK-1) Does your child want to try many different sports? If so, Mixed Sports is right for you. Please join our instructor Ron, as he teaches your children soccer, floor hockey, basketball, volleyball and many other sports in a fun learning environment.
