2 Part II Course Details 1. Abstract (A 150-word description about the course) This course aims to consolidate students of various aspects of Putonghua learnt in previous Putonghua courses, with a view to developing their skills in interpretation and discovering ability from Cantonese into Putonghua based on authentic speeches and texts in Hong Kong settings. 2. Course Intended Learning Outcomes (CILOs) (CILOs state what the student is expected to be able to do at the end of the course according to a given standard of performance.) No. CILOs # Weighting* (if applicable) 1. Interpret authentic speeches and texts from Cantonese into Putonghua accurately and perform situational interpretations. 2. Describe, explain and discover the linguistic differences between Cantonese and Putonghua. 3. Describe and explain the interacting relationship between Discovery-enriched curriculum related learning outcomes (please tick where appropriate) A1 A2 A3 language and culture in Hong Kong settings. * If weighting is assigned to CILOs, they should add up to 100%. 100% # Please specify the alignment of CILOs to the Gateway Education Programme Intended Learning outcomes (PILOs) in Section A of Annex. A1: Attitude Develop an attitude of discovery/innovation/creativity, as demonstrated by students possessing a strong sense of curiosity, asking questions actively, challenging assumptions or engaging in inquiry together with teachers. A2: Ability Develop the ability/skill needed to discover/innovate/create, as demonstrated by students possessing critical thinking skills to assess ideas, acquiring research skills, synthesizing across disciplines or applying academic to self-life problems. A3: Accomplishments Demonstrate accomplishment of discovery/innovation/creativity through producing /constructing creative works/new artefacts, effective solutions to real-life problems or new processes. 3. Teaching and Learning Activities (TLAs) (TLAs designed to facilitate students achievement of the CILOs.) TLA Brief Description CILO No. Hours/week (if applicable) Lecture Source speeches and texts analysis and interpretation demonstration by the instructor; commentary on students assignments Tutorial exercise and presentation Interpretation tasks - Sight translation and consecutive interpretation exercises from Cantonese into Putonghua at word, sentence and paragraph levels gradually. Presentations in Putonghua - 2
3 Group discussion and readings Presentations about the differences between Cantonese and Putonghua, and the interacting relationship between language and culture in Hong Kong settings, are intended as materials for the mock CI interpretations. Mock CI interpretations - Consolidation of basic interpretation skills. Interpretation problems and strategies will be discussed in groups. Texts / AV materials plus online information on Hong Kong to expand vocabulary and to build up on current affairs. 4. Assessment Tasks/Activities (ATs) (ATs are designed to assess how well the students achieve the CILOs.) Assessment Tasks/Activities CILO No. Weighting* Remarks Continuous Assessment: 70% Bilingual journal from 15% Cantonese to Putonghua on a daily basis Segmented presentation in 20% Putonghua, totaling 3 minutes, on a chosen topic, in conjunction with mock CI interpretation Interpretation tasks, both 20% consecutive interpretation and sight translation from Cantonese to Putonghua End-of-term quiz on Hong 15% Kong politics, economy and current affairs Examination: 30% (duration: 1 hours) * The weightings should add up to 100%. 100% 3
