1 MATH 015 Pre-Algebra Course Syllabus Spring 2014 Math 015, 4 units, CRN ONLINE CLASS Instructor: Rene Price Office: Room (north end of 600 building: first floor) Office Hours: Tuesday 9:00am 9:30am, 11:40am -12:40pm Thursday 9:00am 9:30am, 11:40am -12:40pm, 2:55pm 3:25pm ONLINE office hours Tues/Thurs 9-10 pm **I am also working in the Math Lab Annex from 9:30am 11:35 am on Tues/Thurs rprice1@fullcoll.edu Office Phone: (714) Website: Course Prerequisite: Math 010 Basic Mathematics with a grade of C or better, Math 004 and Math 006 with a grade of pass, or math skills clearance. Course Description: This course includes an intensive review of arithmetic, and an introduction to algebra, including operations on signed numbers, ratio, proportion and percentages, variable expressions, geometry; polynomials, and graphing. Upon successful completion of MATH 015 F Pre-algebra, the student will be able to: 1) Perform various operations on integers, fractions, or decimals, and be able to simplify algebraic expressions involving integers, fractions, or decimals. 2) Solve basic linear equations and verbal problems that require simple mathematical models. 3) Perform operations on polynomials such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or factoring out the greatest common factor. *For a full list of course objectives, you may refer to Mrs. Price s website. **Required Materials: 1) MyMathLab Student Access (available in the FC bookstore or online) *MyMathLab includes an online textbook, online homework, and other resources. The textbook is Prealgebra, fifth edition, written by Jamie Blair, John Tobey, Jeffrey Slater, and Jennifer Crawford. You may access the textbook online from our MyMathLab course website. In addition, you have the option of purchasing or renting a hard copy of the textbook if you think it would be helpful. Bookstore options: * The textbook and MyMathLab Access Kit shrink-wrapped as a package set * The MyMathLab Access Kit ONLY * You also have the option of purchasing MyMathLab Access online at 2) Computer with internet access 3) Notebook for working out homework exercises, pencils, eraser 1

2 Grades will be determined as follows: Percentage Grading Scale Online Tests 40% (8% each) A: % Online Homework 10% B: % On-campus Midterm 25% C: % Final (comprehensive) 25% D: % F: % Class Format: Because this is an online class, the learning will be done independently, using the textbook and videos. You are always welcome to the instructor with any questions. Each section will have online homework associated with it. There will be five online tests, each covering two chapters. In addition, there will be an on-campus midterm and on-campus final. Online Homework: Homework in this class will be turned in online using a program called MyMathLab (MyLab/Mastering). You will be graded on the percentage of exercises that are answered correctly. You do not have to complete a section in one sitting. If you complete part of an assignment, you can save the work you have completed and return to the rest later, as long as the assignment is still available. You may also print out your homework if you prefer to work on it while not on the computer however, you will need to log in and input your answers on the computer prior to the homework deadline. The deadline for each week s homework is listed on the syllabus, as well as on the MyMathLab site. Homework is due by 11:00 pm on the listed due date. The number values for each problem will remain the same unless you answer incorrectly 3 times. In this case, press the similar exercise button and attempt the new exercise. You should have a homework notebook in which you work out your homework problems. Try to keep the notebook organized so that you can review your work later. Label the sections and problem numbers. If you are having issues with your home computer, you may use the computers in the Fullerton College Math Lab or the 2200 computer lab. STUDENTS NOT REGISTERED FOR MYMATHLAB BY FEBRUARY 3 MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS Online Tests: There will be five online tests, each covering two chapters. The tests will be based on the online homework, and there will be a set time limit. You will be allowed three attempts per online test, and your highest score will count. 2

3 Required On-campus Exam Dates: **Students need to make the necessary arrangements to attend the two on-campus exams. Midterm: Friday, March 28 from 6:45-8:45 pm in room 615 * Bring a Scantron (882 or 882E), pencils, and eraser. NO CALCULATORS will be allowed. Final Exam: Wednesday, May 21 from 6:45-8:45 pm in room 615 * Bring a Scantron (882 or 882E), pencils, and eraser. A BASIC, NON-SCIENTIFIC calculator will be allowed. No phones, scientific calculators, or graphing calculators will be allowed. Make-up Policies: Homework: Homework due dates are listed on the class schedule, and are due by 11pm on the listed due date. Homework submitted by due date will earn full credit. You will be able to submit late homework for 75% credit. * For Ch 1-5, you may earn the 75% late credit up until Friday, March 28. After that, no credit will be given. * For Ch 6-10, you may earn the 75% late credit up until Wednesday, May 21. You will have 3 attempts to complete each of the online tests, and your best score will count. Be sure to complete these tests well before the due date in case you have any computer issues. 5 FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. Such standards are founded on basic concepts of integrity and honesty. These include, but are not limited to, the following areas: 1. Students shall not plagiarize 2. Students shall not cheat 3. Students shall not furnish materials or information in order to enable another student to plagiarize or cheat. Instructors may deal with academic dishonesty in one or more of the following ways: 1. Assign an appropriate academic penalty such as an oral reprimand or point reduction. 2. Assign an F on all or part of a particular paper, project, or exam. 3. Report to the appropriate administrators, with notification of same to the student(s), for disciplinary action by the College. Such a report will be accompanied by supporting evidence and documentation. Repeated violations may result in students receiving an F in the course, suspension or dismissal from the College. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT (ADA) STATEMENT Fullerton College is committed to providing educational accommodations for students with disabilities upon the timely request by the student to the instructor. CHILDREN ON CAMPUS Children are not allowed on campus unless supervised by a parent or guardian. Children may not attend classes or computer labs (unless the course is specifically designed to include children.) Children must be supervised so educational activities are not interrupted and may not be left unattended in common areas such as the library, student center, food services area, quad or college parking lots. EMERGENCY RESPONSE STATEMENT Take note of the safety features in and around the classroom. Also, please study the posted evacuation routes. The most direct route of exit may not be the safest. Running out of the building during earthquakes may be dangerous. During strong earthquakes, it is recommended to duck, cover, and hold until the quaking stops. Follow the guidance of your instructor. Your cooperation during emergencies can minimize the possibility of injury to yourself and others. You may purchase copies of these publications at the campus bookstore, or you may read them online at the Fullerton College website, STANDARDS OF STUDENT CONDUCT AND DISCIPLINE POLICY The standards of student conduct and disciplinary action for violation of Board Policy 5500 were approved by the NOCCCD Board on January 28, 2003, and were drawn in compliance with Sections 66300, 76030, 76033, 76034, of the State Education Code. Students are expected to respect and obey civil and criminal law and shall be subject to the legal penalties for violation of the city, county, state, and national law(s). Student conduct must conform to Board Policy and college regulations and procedures. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. Students have an obligation to familiarize themselves with the College s policies, rules and regulations and to conduct themselves in a reasonable, respectful manner, which is conducive toward attaining their educational goal. Upon registration, each student should obtain a copy of the College Policies and Regulations: Standards of Student Conduct and Discipline Policy. Contained therein are the policies approved by the Board of Trustees governing student behavior and the applicable penalties for violations of these policies. Copies are available in the Student Affairs Office, the Office of Equity and Diversity, all division offices, and the Student Services office. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting. 5
