This course satisfies graduation requirement for American government institutions and for California state government. We will examine political ideology, political parties, interest groups, voting, campaigns and elections, civil liberties & rights, public opinion, and the media. Political Science 101 is designed to achieve the following Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Civic Participation - Students will demonstrate a general understanding of the American political system as well as the theoretical and operational design of American government institutions at the federal and state level. 2. Critical Thinking - Students will evaluate the democratic nature of American governmental institutions using standards of popular sovereignty, political equality, and liberty. 3. Diversity - Students will identify and explain contrasting views on the role of government, the virtues and vices of democratic decision-making, and the balance of executive, legislative, and judicial power ********************************************************************************** Notice: Students with Disabilities, your success in this course is important to me. Also, establishing an account & joining the class on My Lab & Mastering You may use the campus computers available to students in various computing labs (e.g., Computer Assisted Instruction Lab) or any other computer (work computer, home computer, etc.). Students must also have an account to complete this course successfully and to communicate with the instructor via Santa Ana College s Blackboard online program or via regular . If you do not already have an account, you can get a free account through online services such as Hotmail and Yahoo (see or In addition, Students must maintain current address on Blackboard account and Web Advisor. Electronic Devices (cell/smart phones, personal data accumulators (PDAs), recording devices, laptops or other such devices) are not allowed during exams and must be off the writing area. During class, cell phones must be off or in silent mode and off your writing area. In-class texting, checking Page 2

3 s, web surfing, or other such usage of the electronic devices that is not explicitly authorized by the professor IS PROHIBITED. NO RECORDING (audio or visual): Extreme care should be taken in keeping the best possible WRITTEN NOTES on lectures and class discussions. To protect the privacy of participants and to encourage development of your writing and note-taking skills, AUDIO OR VISUAL RECORDING OF CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND LECTURES IS PROHIBITED without special permission of the instructor and all other class members. The instructor will not grant such permission except in the most extenuating circumstances, e.g., physical disability making written note taking impossible or impractical and with written statement of need from Disabled Students Programs & Services (DSP&S) office. Students should provide their own Advantage 100 AS form(s) for multiple-choice quizzes and Blue/Green Books for midterm and final exam essay question(s). The Student Store sells both items. Late Assignments Policy: Certain assignments will not be accepted late, late assignments are assessed (10) points per day that assignment is late. Make-up Tests Not offered and strongly discouraged, make-up exams only with a doctor s excuse note or note from employer, one time only, at the instructor s discretion -- Attendance is crucial to understanding course content. Academic Honesty: Please note carefully the college s policy regarding Academic Dishonesty (cheating, plagiarism, etc.) listed in the student handbook. Students must do their own work and/or provide appropriate citations for works of others used to complete assignments. Cheating or plagiarism of any sort will not be tolerated. Any student cheating on an exam or engaging in plagiarism will receive zero points on that exam or paper. Withdrawal and Attendance policy: Regular attendance is considered an important condition for receiving credit for this course. Non-attendance or leaving early and not staying for the entire class will result in loss of participation points. Students compiling four (4) absences or missing two weeks of class instruction with no compelling reason or medical excuse or communication with the instructor (me) may be dropped from this course for lack of participation or interest. However, a student should not rely on this to avoid responsibility; ultimately, it is the student s responsibility to drop from a class no longer participating in. In addition, it is the student s (your) responsibility to process an official withdrawal on or before the last day permitted for withdrawals. Failure to do so will normally result in an F grade. Under State and/or College regulations, the instructor CANNOT grant a W after that date. Instructor reserves the right to modify or adjust course outline and schedule due to extenuating circumstances.
