3 What is a LMS platform? A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of educational courses or training programs. Ellis, Ryann K. (2009), Field Guide to Learning Management, ASTD Learning Circuits

5 Things to note The following slides are based on Moodle LMS platform for a number of reasons: it is free, many people have already used it, big community around this product. Descriptions of specific Moodle aspects were taken from the official documentation available at By no means it is pure gold, but even with its flaws it is still one of the top-picks for e-learning courses delivery.

6 Courses A single course in Moodle is everything that gathers together teachers, students and course pages which can vary from simple text to complex activities and exercises. Courses are very flexible in terms of what could be put inside. Courses can be compared to a typical classroom environment. The appropriate hierarchy of courses can be maintained with the use of categories.

12 Activities Assignment The assignment activity module enables a teacher to communicate tasks, collect work and provide grades and feedback.

13 Activities Chat The chat activity module enables participants to have textbased, real-time synchronous discussions.

14 Activities Choice The choice activity module enables a teacher to ask a single question and offer a selection of possible responses.

15 Activities Database The database activity module enables participants to create, maintain and search a collection of entries (i.e. records). The structure of the entries is defined by the teacher as a number of fields.

16 Activities External tool The external tool activity module enables students to interact with learning resources and activities on other web sites. For example, an external tool could provide access to a new activity type or learning materials from a publisher.

17 Activities Feedback The feedback activity module enables a teacher to create a custom survey for collecting feedback from participants using a variety of question types including multiple choice, yes/no or text input.

18 Activities Forum The forum activity module enables participants to have asynchronous discussions i.e. discussions that take place over an extended period of time.

19 Activities Glossary The glossary activity module enables participants to create and maintain a list of definitions, like a dictionary, or to collect and organise resources or information.

20 Activities Lesson The lesson activity module enables a teacher to deliver content and/or practice activities in interesting and flexible ways. A teacher can use the lesson to create a linear set of content pages or instructional activities that offer a variety of paths or options for the learner. A lesson may be graded, with the grade recorded in the gradebook.

21 Activities Quiz The quiz activity enables a teacher to create quizzes comprising questions of various types, including multiple choice, matching, short-answer and numerical.

22 Activities SCORM A SCORM package is a collection of files which are packaged according to an agreed standard for learning objects. The SCORM activity module enables SCORM or AICC packages to be uploaded as a zip file and added to a course.

23 Activities Survey The survey activity module provides a number of verified survey instruments that have been found useful in assessing and stimulating learning in online environments.

24 Activities Wiki The wiki activity module enables participants to add and edit a collection of web pages. A wiki can be collaborative, with everyone being able to edit it, or individual, where everyone has their own wiki which only they can edit.

25 Activities Workshop The workshop activity module enables the collection, review and peer assessment of students' work.

26 Resources Book The book module enables a teacher to create a multi-page resource in a book-like format, with chapters and subchapters. Books can contain media files as well as text and are useful for displaying lengthy passages of information which can be broken down into sections.

27 Resources File The file module enables a teacher to provide a file as a course resource. Where possible, the file will be displayed within the course interface; otherwise students will be prompted to download it.

28 Resources Folder The folder module enables a teacher to display a number of related files inside a single folder, reducing scrolling on the course page. A zipped folder may be uploaded and unzipped for display, or an empty folder created and files uploaded into it.

29 Resources IMS content package An IMS content package is a collection of files which are packaged according to an agreed standard so they can be reused in different systems. The IMS content package module enables such content packages to be uploaded as a zip file and added to a course as a resource.

30 Resources Label The label module enables text and multimedia to be inserted into the course page in between links to other resources and activities. Labels are very versatile and can help to improve the appearance of a course if used thoughtfully.

31 Resources Page The page module enables a teacher to create a web page resource using the text editor. A page can display text, images, sound, video, web links and embedded code, such as Google maps.

32 Resources URL The URL module enables a teacher to provide a web link as a course resource. Anything that is freely available online, such as documents or images, can be linked to; the URL doesn t have to be the home page of a website.

33 Moodle roles Moodle contains default 8 different roles, each serving a specific purpose. It is important to note, that the roles can be defined by the system administrator, including creating new ones.

34 Roles Manager Managers can access course and modify them, they usually do not participate in courses.

35 Course creator Course creators can create new courses.

36 Teacher Teachers can do anything within a course, including changing the activities and grading students.

37 Non-editing teacher Non-editing teachers can teach in courses and grade students, but may not alter activities.

38 Student Students generally have fewer privileges within a course.

39 Guest Guests have minimal privileges and usually can not enter text anywhere.

40 Authenticated user All logged in users.

41 Authenticated user on frontpage All logged in users in the frontpage course.

42 Other useful features

43 Calendar The calendar can display site, course, group and or user events in addition to assignment and quiz deadlines, chat times and other course events.

44 File management Moodle has a convenient file management that allows you to drag and drop files from cloud storage services (OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive).

45 Notifications Users can receive automatic alerts on new assignments and deadlines, forum posts and also send private messages to one another.

48 Preparing the content It can be done either directly on the e-learning platform, or in external document (for example Word). While working on the content, it is generally a good idea to follow the template, especially if another person will be uploading it to the e-learning platform.
