Open to Talent As the only university based in Tasmania, UTAS has a unique and distinctive position, nationally and internationally. The closeness of our relationship with Tasmania defines us as an institution, our strength and character generated by the interplay between serving our community and being the best university we can be. We are a fine university, part of an established and esteemed collective of institutions spanning the world, and strategically global in all that we do. Our Statement of Values asserts that [w] e work in a unique setting and actively partner with the communities in which we live, in support of a healthy, civil and sustainable society. At the same time, we are outwardly focused and part of a global community, engaging with the rest of Australia and the world. This encapsulates our distinctive opportunity and informs the future articulated by Open to Talent. We will create this future by focusing on three key priorities: Research: creating new ideas and new knowledge; contributing to future prosperity via innovative approaches to the issues impacting our society and environment. 4 Domain House, Hobart Our Priorities Research We will: R1. Support research breadth, while pursuing the benefits of targeted research investment. R2. Attract, retain and support outstanding researchers. R3. Ensure the research performance of the majority of UTAS staff is at international standard. R4. Expand the research higher degree cohort. R5. Address the pressing problems of our time by drawing upon a breadth of disciplinary expertise and enabling cross-disciplinary approaches. R6. Bring our research to the attention of the world. Students We will: S1. Expand and diversify our student cohort by providing Tasmanians with greater access to higher education and increasing our attractiveness to national and international markets. S2. Seek a more balanced distribution of students across our campuses. S3. Develop a renewed curriculum that incorporates greater intellectual breadth and provides graduates with the skills required for participation in the national and international workforce. S4. Form partnerships to expand our offerings in areas where we may be constrained, including pathways with schools and the VET sector and articulation arrangements with universities. S.5 Provide a distinctive, memorable and rewarding UTAS student experience. Community We will: C1. Engage with the economic, social, cultural and intellectual life of Tasmania and extend this engagement into national and international networks. C2. Use our relationship with Tasmania to inform research questions, test research solutions at systemic scale, and translate research models into solutions for modern society. C3. Enhance our education programs by engaging with Tasmania s society and environment, fostering skills that extend the curriculum and provide real world experiences for our students. C4. Attract scholars and thought leaders from around the world to UTAS and support our staff and students to spend time at other institutions. C5.
