1 HACC: CENTRAL PENSYLVANIA S COMMUNITY COLLEGE VIRTUAL CAMPUS COURSE INFORMATION AND SYLLABUS COURSE: Math 100 College Math for Business Spring 2015 CRN (V01) 3 Credits INSTRUCTOR: DIVISION: Robert Farinelli rfarine@hacc.edu Phone: Mathematics and Science COURSE DESCRIPTION: Basic operations of arithmetic with emphasis on percentage, trade and cash discounts, merchandising, depreciation, property and sales taxes, payroll, income tax, insurance, simple and compound interest, notes, credit and timebuying, the metric system, and basic descriptive statistics. The course is taught primarily through MyMathLab, powered by CourseCompass, a version of Blackboard designed specifically for Addison Wesley (our publishers). It offers a suite of resources such as video clips, multimedia features, practice problems, worked-out examples, guided solutions, study plans, sample tests and communication tools that will allow you to participate in class discussions. PREREQUISITE: Math 010 with a grade of C or better or placement through the College Testing and Placement Program LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: Analyze quantitative data to solve problems Demonstrate a basic working knowledge of the business operations of a for profit enterprise as it relates to: banking, payroll, federal, state, and local taxes; property, casualty, life, and auto insurance; taking trade and cash discounts; markup/down and breakeven; inventory valuation; simple and compound interest; installment and credit card operations; maturity and present value of annuities; and metric system conversion Demonstrate a basic understanding of stocks, bonds, and various methods of profit distribution as well statistics and charts related to stocks and bonds
2 REQUIRED MATERIALS: Text: Business Mathematics with MyMathLab (10 th Ed) by Cleaves, Hobbs, Pearson, If you purchase a new book through the HACC Bookstore, then the MyMathLab access code to the course will be packaged free with the text. If you purchase a new book elsewhere or a used book, you will still need to purchase an access code. You can purchase the access code online when you register for the course for about $95 (subject to change). A scientific calculator with exponent keys is required. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS (Minimum): This course will utilize both D2L (HACC s course management system) and My Math Lab. TO LOGIN IN TO THE COURSE: Go to myhacc.hacc.edu. Log in using your HACC username and password. Click on the Desire2Learn link on the left. Click on your course MATH-100-VO1. Follow the instructions to login to MyMathLab (also known as CourseCompass). The course ID is farinelli As soon as you receive your textbook, you should install the plug-ins that are located on the course website. These plug-ins will help you access and understand the various components of the course. If for any reason, the plug-ins do not work, contact the technical support people at Addison Wesley Corporation Technical Support (not HACC s Help Desk) (M thru F, 9 am 6 pm EST) support@coursecompass.com EVALUATION Exam #1 20% Exam #2 20% Final Exam 25% Graded Homework 10% Quizzes 15% Discussion Boards 10% Final averages will be assigned letter grades according to the following scale: % A, 80-89% B, 70-79% C 60-69% D, 0-59% F ONLINE QUIZZES: Twelve online quizzes are scheduled as shown in the outline that follows (usually each week that there is no exam). Students are required to log on to the My Math Lab website to take the quiz during the posted period. A detailed announcement for each quiz will be posted in the ANNOUNCEMENTS in D2L.
3 PROCTORED EXAMS: Two proctored tests and a comprehensive final examination are pencil and paper tests and will be given during the test periods posted by the Virtual Campus Office. Students are expected to log on to the Virtual Campus web site at to check the actual dates, times, and location at their campus. Students are to notify the instructor of their selected location, date, and time for each test at least one week before the start of the testing period. Students are expected to bring a calculator to the proctored tests. However, cell phones or any other electronic devices will not be permitted as calculators. Dates for Spring Exams: Exam #1 February Exam #2 April 1-2 Final Exam May 6-7 HOMEWORK: For each week, exercises will be selected and assigned as homework with a My Math Lab due date. Students need to log on to the site, go to the homework site, do the exercises and submit through the site. Students are expected to work on the homework daily. It can be partially submitted daily up until the due date. The score will be updated each time it is submitted. Never wait until the last minute to start the homework. DISCUSSION BOARD: Students will be expected to complete discussion board posts each week as well. These are found on D2L under the Discussions tab. These will collectively be worth 10% of your grade, so make sure you do not forget about them. MAKE-UP POLICY: DISCUSSION BOARDS, QUIZZES, HOMEWORK: Normally, these assignments are due by 11:59pm ET on Sunday night of the indicated week. In rare and extenuating circumstances, these assignments may be made up if the student has a valid reason and can provide documentation to the instructor. This request must be made before the due date of the assignment. EXAMS: When a student fails to take the on-line test(s) or proctored exam(s) during the posted testing period, no make up will be given unless the student has notified the instructor by phone or before the end of the testing period with an acceptable and documented excuse. The make-up test must be rescheduled and taken within one week. With the instructor s permission and within the scheduled time, the student may take the make-up for the proctored test at the Test Center located at his/her campus during the operating hours or make arrangement for another testing facility. Make-up tests are always harder. Only one make up per student per semester will be given, with no exceptions.
4 If a student cannot come to one of the campus locations to take the proctored pencil and paper exam, he/she will need to make the instructor aware of this situation and secure a qualified proctor with the instructor's permission. A test proctor form must be completed and mailed to the Virtual Campus Office for approval two weeks prior to the requested test date. The form will be forwarded to the instructor for approval. Guidelines for securing a proctor and a proctor form may be downloaded from the Virtual Campus web site. If you would like a form mailed to you, contact the Virtual Campus Office. REFUND DATES: 100% by January 27, 50% by February 10 ADD/DROP POLICY: 1. Students who drop the course by February 10, 2015 will receive no grade. 2. Students who have registered for the course but do not participate in any assigned work and required graded activities by the end of the third week will be dropped from the class as nonattendance. 3. Students who drop a course on or before the midpoint of the semester, March 4, 2015, and have participated in the course activities may be awarded a grade of W. Students who drop a course after the midpoint of the semester and on or before the last day of class, May 4, 2015, will receive a grade of W with progress grade of at least 60%; otherwise, will receive a grade of F. Students who do not attend the first proctored test and do not contact the instructor will be dropped from the course with a W grade. Students who do not attend the second proctored test and do not contact the instructor will be dropped from the course with a W grade if they would still have at least a 60% average, an F grade otherwise. 4. All withdraw forms must be completed and signed by May 1 in order for the process to be completed by the last day of classes. GETTING HELP: Students are encouraged to contact the instructor for help during the posted office hours or by appointment. Tutoring is available in the Learning Center at each campus, In addition, online tutoring is available and provided by SMARTHINKING and MyMathLab. For SMARTHINKING, go to for registration information. For technical help with MyMathLab, you may contact website support at (24/7)
5 OTHER INFORMATION 1. No retests will be given to any student and test scores will not be curved nor dropped from the calculation of the course grade. Once the test is taken, that is the grade that will be counted. 2. If a student is found cheating in a test or graded assignment, he/she will receive a grade of zero for that work. If cheating is repeated, he/she will receive a grade of F for the course. 3. In order to succeed in this course, students are expected to do the assigned homework and logon to the website to use the available resources. Students should logon daily and check for new announcements posted. 4. During normal school days, all questions/concerns sent electronically will be addressed within 24 hours. It may take longer during weekends and/or holidays.
