Acquire a general understanding of Canadian law as it applies to business in Canada. This will be assessed on the mid- term and final exams, in general class discussion and in the reports to the instructor from small group discussions. 2. Recognize legal issues as they arise in business situations. Assessed as above 3. Create and carry out business practices to prevent legal problems. Assessed in general class and small group discussions of business problems 4. Communicate effectively with others in business about legal issues. Assessed as in 1

2 2 OBJECTIVES AND COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the important fundamental concepts of law, and provides an introduction to the principles of most of the specific areas of law that touch upon the conduct of business in Canada. It is expected that students will acquire a basic knowledge of the major legal principles applicable to business. Students will learn the methods used by lawyers to analyze legal problems. Students will be able to identify legal issues that may arise in business, and will have a broad understanding of the legal principles applicable to legal issues that arise in business. Students will be able to organize their business affairs so as to conduct their business using the best business practices that result from knowledge of the law applicable to their business. Students will be able to effectively and efficiently use lawyer in business. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS: Contemporary Canadian Business Law, 9 th ed., Willes and Willes SUPPLEMENTAL READINGS: Summaries and notes handed out in class. ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION: Reports from Small Group Discussions 25% Second Mid-term 20% Third Mid-Term 25% Final exam 30% % GRADING SCALE: A A A B B B C C C D F < 49 CONDUCT OF THE COURSE 1. Regular class attendance is expected. 2. Students are responsible for all announcements made in class, whether the student is present or not.

3 3 3. Exams must be written at the scheduled date, time and location. Only a legitimate reason, such as illness, will be accepted as an excuse for not writing an exam as scheduled. The student must notify the instructor of the absence at the earliest opportunity and if necessary provide reasonable evidence to document that illness. 4. Final percentage grades will be converted to letter grades using the above grading scale. 5. Students must complete all the specified requirements of the course, or a final grade will not be given. 6. Course information is subject to change (consistent with College policy) with notice. 7. Students are responsible for maintaining a classroom atmosphere which will promote and encourage learning. Frequent classroom disturbances either directly or indirectly as the result of a student s action may result in that student s removal from the course. SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT: It is the aim of the School of Management of e to promote throughout each course the mastery of core skills such as reading and reading comprehension, writing fluency, verbal articulation, and math development. These core skills will be practiced by means of student presentations and/or class participation, and will be evaluated on submitted work. Critical thinking and problem solving exercises will be encouraged at every opportunity.
