Announcements and Updates a) Introductions of new liaisons b) Discussion of Meeting Day 1. It was decided that the meetings will continue to be on the third Thursday of each month 2. Next meeting is scheduled for September 15, 2011 at 4:00pm, Withers 320A and Polycom locations (Chester Park School of Inquiry, Fairfield District Office, South Middle, Union Technology Center, and Alma Elementary) c) School Daily Schedules to help us maximize our use of time please forward your school schedules to d) September Foundations in Mentoring training date changed to October e) National Council for Teacher Quality (NCTQ) Dean Rakestraw shared information on the non profit group assessing university based teacher education programs through questionable methodology; they may be contacting teachers for them to evaluate Winthrop s program. f) Unit Assessment Committee Lisa Harris (WFIR and Chair) 1. Opportunity for a school representative to serve on the Unit Assessment Committee to review data and recommend changes to the WU Teacher Education Program. 2. Meetings will be on a Thursday (Aug. 30, Sept. 13 and 27, Mon., Oct. 10), 11:00am 12:15pm so availability during the day is necessary 3. If you are interested please contact Lisa Harris at harrisl@winthrop.edu or Lisa Johnson at johnsonle@winthrop.edu g) NCATE (National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education) will be at Winthrop October 8 10, 2011

2 1. Partnership Advisory Council, school liaisons and principals will participate in this visit. Invitations will be sent out soon but leave your calendars open for Sunday evening (Oct. 9) and Monday afternoon (Oct. 10) 2. Highlighting collaborative work between the university and schools for Standard 3 (Field and Clinical Experiences) II. Programs and Initiatives a) Increasing mentor teacher diversity 1. NetSCOPE will continually accept mentor applications; looking at data on mentor teachers, we need to increase the diversity. We will revisit the data after fall 2011 and spring 2012 b) Research and Inquiry Grants applications are being accepted on a rolling schedule (until all funds have been distributed) please let us know if you have ideas and need assistance finding collaborative partners or developing a proposal 1. Restrictions resource district must partner with a high needs district (Winthrop Faculty can help match needs/schools) 2. Sue Spencer and Carol Shields shared results of their past research grants 3. If you are interested in a workshop on Research and Inquiry Grants contact Barbara Mallory at malloryb@winthrop.edu c) Early Field Placements 1. We want to meet the needs of school partners and Winthrop courses a. We will gather information on all field experience courses and distribute to liaisons as one page including: time in field, mentor teacher role, activities, etc. b. Liaisons should share the opportunities with mentor teachers at their school and reply to Paul Horne (hornep@winthrop.edu) with placement possibilities c. School liaison can also send needs for WU student service learning or field work. d. Note A background check is mandatory for all Winthrop COE freshman

3 d) Trends in Internship Work Sample Data see attached slides (Liaisons to share with Mentor Teachers with interns traditional and field experience) III Annual Assessment Plans creating SMART objectives and aligning evaluation methods 1. All plans are due August 30, 2011 (results of plan from past year; objectives for upcoming year); feedback will be provided on new plans by mid September 2. Revisit SMART objectives (see handout) to document and measure year end objectives achieved what were the outcomes of the objectives? At the end of each grant cycle, all objectives/results will be combined into a matrix 3. May want to continue objectives from last year or tie all objectives to a school based initiative (i.e., co teaching, math and science, etc.) 4. For a copy of last year s plan, contact Paul Horne at hornep@winthrop.edu 5. Felix for help or questions regarding creating clear objectives at felix@evaluationgroup.com IV. Open Discussion 1. David Beiter and Paul Horne will be out in the schools beginning next week 2. 4 Partnership Advisory Council ~ IWS Notes 08/18/2011 Internship Work Sample Analysis Using our IWS data to improve our programs based on analysis by Dr. Susan Green (in collaboration with Teacher Education faculty and mentor teachers) Improvements More extensive assessment plans wider variety of assessments being used Increased use of formative assessment Incorporations of interventions across all three levels of UDL (multiple representations of content, means of expression, and opportunities for engagement) Increased use of interactive whiteboards, subject-specific, and assistive technology 90.6% of students taught by teacher candidates made gains on at least one learning goal!! Internship Work Sample Analysis Work to be done Continued focus on differentiating instruction, especially for diverse learners o Improve use of contextual factors to identify student learning needs (ELL, IEP, 504, etc.) should be reflected in lesson plans o Pre-assessments need to address a range of understanding and skills (easy to difficult) o Use of formative assessment should be emphasized providing students the opportunity to improve - should be reflected in lesson plans 1
