1 Syllabus Electrical Association Apprentice Course Year Three 2017 / 2018 Course Description This course has been validated by Century College for a minimum of 144 hours of training for unlicensed electricians and apprentices in an indentured apprentice program, as presented by the Electrical Association (EA). The Course will consist of live real-time online classes and require completion of worksheets and quizzes. *Please note: 8000 hours of on the job training will need to be completed prior to sitting for the Minnesota Journeyman Exam. There is an exception to this rule in Minnesota for 2 year approved trade school graduates who need 6000 hours after graduation. These classes do not qualify as a trade school to apply towards the 8000 hour requirement. *If you are taking the MEA apprentice course to meet requirements in additional states please verify that this program meets their specific requirements Start and End Dates Classes begin Tuesday, September 26, The scheduled final exam due date is May 8th, Orientation Orientation will be held September 12 th and September 14 th from 6:30pm 7:30pm. A WebEx invitation link will be sent to your to access the session. If you are unable to attend either live session, you may view the recording later. Days and Times Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings, 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM (CT). Students are encouraged to log in 30 minutes prior to the start of the class. Speakers and a microphone or a headset 2. High-speed hard wired internet connection (i.e. DSL, cable, or satellite) ********COMPLETE THIS TASK BEFORE THE EVENING OF THE FIRST CLASS******** Prior to the first class, make sure your computer will work with WebEx software. 1. Copy and paste the following URL into your browser s address bar: System requirements can also be found here. 2. Enter your name and address. 3. Click the Test a Meeting button. Wait while the system test is performed. If you have any technical difficulties with the WebEx site, contact the 24-hour WebEx technical support line at Note: This course is not accessible with Chromebooks, Mobile Wireless Devices or Windows XP. If you are using Windows 10, this course is only accessible using Internet Explorer. Technology Outage It is the student s responsibility to have a functional computer in order to participate in this class. If it takes longer than 10 minutes to resolve a student s computer issue, the student must view a recording of the session. If there is a technology failure during class, the student is expected to stay connected to the WebEx session for 30 minutes after the failure. Cancelled Class If a regularly scheduled class is canceled, it will be rescheduled. Notification will be sent by either the trainer or Electrical Association via . Students must attend the rescheduled class or view a recording of the session, which will be available in the apprentice course website. 2

3 Grading Weekly Assignments: Block Exams: Attendance: Final Grade: Complete 100% of the assignments and quizzes with a score of 70% or better. 100% of the block tests and Final Test shall be completed with a score of 70% or better. Students must attend all weekly classes or view recorded sessions. Follow the process below if a class is missed due to illness, vacation, or job related travel. 1. Notify your employer 2. Notify apprentice coordinator at apprentice@electricalassociation.com 3. Make arrangements to complete the assignment/exam before the deadline. 4. View the recorded session of the class that was missed. Make-up sessions, assignments and exams must be completed by May 11, The final grade shall be PASS or FAIL based on the requirements above. Extensions will be given for special circumstances only. You must notify the MEA administrator for permission prior to May 11 th, 2018 for consideration of an extension. Participation To receive credit for attending a class, the student must actively participate and maintain a high level of attentiveness during the class. The technology used for this course has the ability to track participation levels.. If other tabs, windows, browsers, etc. are open on your computer during class, the report will show a decrease in attentiveness and may result in an incomplete for your attendance. Additionally, the student must respond to questions, polls, and other activities during each class. Students who are not fully engaged in each class will be required to view the recorded session. If a student is more than 10 minutes late for class or has logged out early, they will be required to view the recorded session. No credit will be given for partial class participation. Class Room Behavior Students are expected to be respectful of the instructor and other participants in class. Do not write inappropriately on the whiteboard, slides or in the chat panel. If inappropriate behavior continues, the student s employer will be contacted. Progress Reports Students and their employer-designated administrators have access to an online gradebook where they are encouraged to view and monitor progress at any time. The employer or apprentice administer will receive progress reports on a monthly basis. Signed Waivers Students must sign waivers allowing the release of their progress to their employer. Law requires training institutions to have a signed waiver specifically granting permission in order to share the grades of students. Employers need to have students sign a waiver, which allows EA to inform them of the student s progress. 3

4 Weekly Quizzes and Homework All homework and quizzes must be completed before the start of the next class. A quiz or a block exam will accompany each lesson. Students are allowed to submit quizzes until they have earned a score of 70% or better. All quizzes are open book and have no time limit. Block & Final Exams Exam Access: Exam Deadline: Exam Attempts: Reschedule Exam: Exams will be accessed through the website at Instructions for taking exams will be provided in website documentation. Block exams must be completed by noon 2 weeks from the start of the exam, at which time the exam will automatically close. Example: An exam opened on Monday night is due two weeks later at noon, unless otherwise informed by your instructor. The final exam will be available for completion for a period of 2 weeks. Students have one attempt to take the exam while it is open and should make sure they are satisfied with their answers before submitting the exam. If the exam is missed or you would like to improve your score, your employer or apprentice administrator will need to contact the Electrical Association at apprentice@electricalassociation.com. Additional attempts will not be provided without employer approval. 4
