Prerequisites: with a grade of C or better. 660 Catalog Description: An introduction to database systems, including design, organization and implementation. Prerequisite: Previous experience using several computer application software packages in a Windows environment. A student who has credit for CSIS or the equivalent cannot receive credit for CSIS Course Objectives: After completing /44-660, the student should be able to define basic terms used in database management systems describe the advantages and disadvantages of using database management systems describe the database development process understand the basic concepts of logical database design describe the physical database design process incorporate business rules into a conceptual data model model sophisticated relationships among data, including strong and weak entity types, composite attributes, multivalued attributes, derived attributes, cardinality constraints, unary relationships, binary relationships, ternary relationships, and supertypes and subtypes 1/6
2 normalize a set of database tables to third normal form understand the basic concepts of physical database design, including volume estimates, designing fields, denormalization, indexing, and query optimization retrieve information from database files using SQL use a DBMS to implement database applications design a database to meet the requirements specified by a client Textbook: Modern Database Management (12 th Edition) by Jeffrey A. Hoffer, Ramesh Venkataraman, Heikki Topi. Published by Pearson Education, Inc. ISBN: For residential, undergraduate students this text is available from the campus textbook center. Graduate students enrolled in will need to purchase this textbook. Software: Students must have access to WinZip or some other software to unzip files downloaded from the course site and to zip files that you are uploading. Apache, PHP and MySQL -- these are free downloads (instructions for installing will be provided) Announcements and Announcements are communicated via the course website and your Northwest Missouri State University account. It is your responsibility to check each of these sources daily. All s in this class will be sent to your Northwest address. s from students to the instructor should be reserved for those instances where private communication is necessary. In those cases where an is necessary, the subject must include the course number ( or ), and the must include your first and last name. For security reasons, I never open s that do not include an appropriate entry for the subject. I do not respond to s that are not identified with a name. Professionalism: Students are expected to behave in a professional manner in their dealings with each other, the class assistant, and the instructor. This is particularly important when using electronic means of communication, such as or discussion threads. s between close friends or individuals who know each other well are frequently written in a very informal manner, which is quite appropriate. However, communications to the instructor, class assistant, or a classmate with whom you are not well-acquainted should be written in the same manner that you would use if you were sending an to an employer. That is, the s should be politely written, use proper grammar, and follow the rules of capitalization. Similar rules apply to the discussion threads. Use of Publicly-Available PCs: All code that you store on a hard drive in a public lab or classroom must be moved to your student storage when you leave the PC. Hard drive space is not intended for private storage. To avoid losing any of your program files, use your student storage for your files. Academic Honesty: The policy stated in the Northwest Missouri State University Undergraduate Catalog will be followed. The document CSIS Academic Integrity Policy clearly explains those types of behavior that would be considered academic dishonesty. You are responsible for reading this document and abiding by the guidelines described therein. Note that plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, failure to give credit for help received on a homework assignment. Also note that all assignments are to be done individually, unless specified otherwise. You may talk to classmates and other students about an assignment, but you must do all the work yourself from beginning to end. Two or more students may sit down together and discuss an assignment as they are working on it, but each student must do his/her own work in completing the assignment. You cannot copy another person's code or written work. You cannot copy database objects or any portion of a database from another student's files. Failure to follow these guidelines and the remaining guidelines described in the CSIS Academic Integrity Policy will be subject to the penalties described in the catalog. 2/6
3 Disability Accommodations: Students in this course who need disability accommodations/modifications should present a copy of their official Northwest accommodation letter from the LAP/S Committee to the instructor during private office hours as early in the term as possible. Additional information can be found online at (Links to an external site.). Grading Policy: Grades are posted in the online gradebook. You are responsible for checking the gradebook at least once a week to ensure that your grades are properly posted. If there is an error in grading, you must bring that to the attention of the class assistant or instructor within two weeks of the time the grade is posted. Exams and Quizzes: Exams and quizzes must be taken at the scheduled time. Some exam dates are in the syllabus, but are subject to change. If you have to miss an exam, it is your responsibility to notify the instructor in advance and to provide the instructor with written verification of the reason for your absence. Failure to follow these instructions will result in a deduction of points or possibly a grade of zero on the exam or quiz. Pop Quizzes: Pop quizzes will sometimes be given at the beginning of class. These will be worth about 5-10 points each. If you arrive late to class and miss the quiz, you will receive a 0. You will not be allowed to make up points lost for quizzes unless an official written notice of your absence is provided (i.e. doctor's notification, etc.). Assignments: All assignments are due at the designated time. Assignments are individual projects. You may talk freely with your classmates, instructor, and class/lab assistants regarding the assignments, but any help received must be fully credited. Failure to credit a source constitutes plagiarism and is subject to the university rules regarding cheating. It is never permissible to copy another person s work. Read the section in this syllabus on academic honesty for details. Class Attendance: Attendance will be taken every class period. Although there are no points assigned for attending class, your attendance may make a difference in your final course grade. Due Dates: Assignments must be turned in by the due date/time. Assignments turned in after the due date will receive no credit. Worksheets: All worksheets, including solutions, will be available on the course website. Worksheets are not turned in or graded. However, doing the worksheets will help you to perform well on the exams. Use the keys to the worksheets wisely. By the time you take an exam, you should be able to complete all the worksheets without referring to the keys. Graduate Paper: All students enrolled in will be required to write a paper on database topics. Topics must be approved by the instructor. Further details will be provided on the course web site. Miscellaneous Points: Miscellaneous points consist of any extra points that may be awarded pop quizzes or other activities. These are not extra credit points. If used, they will be required for the entire class, except as noted below Points Grading Components Points Grading Scale points each % A Final exam (comprehensive) 200 >= 80% and < 90% B 2 30 points each 60 >= 70% and < 80% C Chapter Assignments 15 pts each) 45 >= 60% and < 70% D SQL Assignments (2 at 15 pts each) 30 Below 60% F 3/6
