COURSE DESCRIPTION: Designed to develop basic algebra skills through a study of fundamental properties of numbers, fundamental operations in arithmetic and algebra, including polynomials and linear equations. LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to: Evaluate and simplify linear algebraic expressions using the properties of real numbers and the order of operations

2 Perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and factoring on polynomials Simplify polynomial and rational expressions Use the laws of exponents to simplify expressions containing integer exponents Solve each of the following types of equations: linear equations, quadratic equations by factoring, and systems of linear equations in two variables Translate real life applications into mathematical equations, formulate problem solving strategies, and interpret the solutions Solve linear inequalities and write solution sets using interval and set-builder notations Graph solutions sets for linear equations and inequalities in one unknown and linear equations in two unknowns Formulate the equation of a line given characteristics of the line PREREQUISITE: Placement through the College Testing and Placement Program or completion of MATH010 with a grade of C or better. TEXTBOOK: Elementary Algebra, by Carson and Jordan, 3 rd edition (or special edition for HACC), Pearson/Prentice Hall SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: The course website supports Windows, Macintosh, and Linux operating systems and various browsers (Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox) You can check your specific operating system and browser at GRADING POLICIES: Your grade will be determined by the following: 1) Online Assignments (20%) At MyLABS+ 2) Online Chapter TESTS (10%) At MyLABS+ 3) Discussion Forum (5%) Done at D2L Home Page!!! 3 If your percentage is then you will receive a grade of At least 90% an A. at least 80% and less than 90%, a B. at least 70% and less than 80%, a C. at least 60% and less than 70%, a D. less than 60%, an F. Online ASSIGNMENTS: See syllabus below Each student will be responsible for completing various graded assignments, throughout the semester. Please be aware of ALL of the due dates on the SYLLABUS calendar! Late Assignments will have 10% deducted from your assignment grade! ****NOTE: You will see ALL ONLINE assignments and tests at the Publisher s Website! (MyLABS+) Online Chapter TESTS! CH1, CH2, CH 4, CH 5, CH 6!!! (Check SYLLABUS Calendar these dates are also available at MYLABS+) ******ONCE YOU START A TEST, IT MUST BE COMPLETED IN ONE SITTING******* The TESTS have TIME LIMITS (usually 45min or 1 hour). DO NOT OPEN THE TEST UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO TAKE IT *** You may take each TEST up to 3 times!!** Only the Highest grade is actually calculated although each grade will be visible in your MyLABS+ Gradebook!! *****YOU MAY RETURN TO COMPLETE UNFINISHED ASSIGNMENTS at any time up until the Late Penalty DUE DATE! The exams have a 2 hour time limit, so make sure that you check the hours at the testing center and allow enough time to complete the exams! ** 1) Exam for material from CH 1,2,3 (Feb 18 or 19) 2) Exam for material from CH 4,5 ( April 1 or 2) 3) **Comprehensive Final Exam for material from CH 4,5,6,7, 8A (May 6 or 7)

4 **There will be Review Assignments that are in your ONLINE course in order to help you to prepare for the Proctored Exams. They should help you to prepare for the actual proctored exam** TUTORING: Tutoring is available in the Learning Center at each campus. In addition, online tutoring is available through SMARTHINKING. Go to the Virtual Campus web site for registration information. I believe there is ALSO a Link to SMARTHINKING when you log in to D2L (Desire to Learn). It should be located at the top of your D2L homepage which lists all of your classes. OTHER INFORMATION 1. No re-tests (Exams) will be given except for Medical or Personal issues!!. Exam scores will not be curved nor dropped from the calculation of the course grade. Once the test is taken, that is the grade that will be counted. 2. I expect the highest level of academic honesty from all of my students. Any incident of academic dishonesty will result in a zero on the work in question and/or a grade of an F for the course. 3. In order to succeed in this course, students will need to log onto the course web site on a regular basis. Please check your D2L MAT020 homepage each time you logon to your HACC courses for NEWS and MAIL notifications!! It is the student s responsibility to keep pace with the class and to adhere to all posted deadlines 4. s from students will normally receive a response within 24 hours. Response time may be longer on weekends and college holidays and breaks 5. Withdrawal information: **Registered students need to log into the course web site on the first day of classes, January 20 **Students who have registered for the course but have not logged into the course web site by the end of the second week, will be dropped from the course as never attended. Students who drop the course on or before the midpoint of the semester, and have participated in the course will receive a grade of W Students who drop the course after the midpoint of the semester (Check with Registrar!), will receive a grade of W if his/her grade at that point is at least a 60%; otherwise, the student will receive a grade of F. No withdrawals will be processed during the last week of the semester. 100% refund will be given if a student withdraws on or before the end of the 1st week of class (end of the first week!-check with Registrar)

5 50% refund will be given if a student withdraws before the end of the 3 rd week of class (Check with Registrar!) 6. Office Hours: No fixed office hours! Students will take these tests at the Testing Center at the HACC campus through which they are registered. Testing Schedule (see Calendar above) If you cannot come to one of the campus locations to take your proctored paper exam, you will need to make your instructor aware of this situation and secure a qualified proctor with the instructor's permission. A test proctor form must be completed and mailed to the Virtual Campus Office for approval two weeks prior to your requested test date. The form will be forwarded to your instructor for approval. You can download the guidelines for securing a proctor and a proctor form from the Virtual Campus web site at You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file. Print out the form and follow the instructions on the form. If you would like a form mailed to you, contact the Virtual Campus Office.

10 Below are the answers to some common questions that you may have about this online course. If you cannot find an answer to your question anywhere in the syllabus or the course information that you ve been given, feel free to me at How do I log into the course web site? To log-in: 1. Go to ( there will Always be a link to this site at your D2L homepage) 2. Enter your username, which is your HACC ID or H-number (something like H ) and password, which will originally be haccstudent. 3. Click on the plus sign next to Spr2015 to expand the term. 4. Click on the name of your course in the course list. *If your course name is not listed or experience any difficulty logging in, contact your instructor. Do I need a Course ID or student access code to get into the course web site? In the past, students needed this information to register on the course web site. Simply being registered for the course at HACC allows you access to the course web site. You need only the user name and password. What is the difference between MyMathLab, MyLabsPlus, and MathXL? Your class is a MyMathLab course hosted in MYLabsPlus(+) the online teaching and learning environment- and incorporating MathXL the online testing and homework manager. You will find that these names are used interchangeably. You will only need to access Do I need to be logged in to the course web site at specified times? You may access course material on the course web site any time. However, you will need to log in to the web site regularly to keep pace with the class. You will also need to complete assignments, and tests during the time period that they are available. Do I need to come to a HACC campus? YES!.only for the 3 proctored exams

12 What is on the D2L website? Here s a general overview of the areas found on the course web site and how we will use them. Syllabus This will serve as reference section, where you can find the course syllabus which contains general course information, such as a schedule of course material and your instructor s contact information, and frequently asked questions. D2L Home Page for MAT 020 You should check the MATH020 D2Lhome page on a regular basis. Here you will find course updates, announcements, instructor notes and extra videos that I posted and any messages for the entire class. Your is also accessible from this page. Discussion Board (Required on the D2L home page) This is where most of the classroom interaction will take place. There are areas to post any questions, comments, or concerns. Each chapter will have a separate forum. You are required to post in each chapter 1) a question that you have about something in the chapter material and 2) a response to someone else s post. Just be aware that if you choose not to participate, the 5 points towards your grade is half of a letter grade Ex: an average of 93% will become 88%...dropping your grade from an A to a B! This is a classroom discussion. Hopefully one of your classmates can help you! If you cannot get your question answered in a timely fashion.. These pages will be where you will go to complete your online homework, and take your online tests! Study Plan(Has no effect on your grade!...optional) Here you will find links to objectives from the course material in each section of the text. Each objective is linked to exercises which help you practice it. This is where you CAN spend much of your time assessing your grasp of the material. Gradebook Here you will find the results of your graded work in this class. You are encouraged to immediately check whether any work that you ve done online registers within the course web site. 13 The Multimedia Library, Tools for Success, and Additional Student Resources contain various aids to help you acclimate yourself to the course web site and access resources available. Course Material You will find the material for which you are responsible within each Chapter. Here you will find a link for each chapter that we cover and some other helpful links. Under each chapter link, you will find links to online chapter assignments as well as links for each section of chapter and some end-ofchapter exercises from your text. Clicking on a section link will bring you to a page with the chapter lecture, your online multimedia textbook, and online exercises. You can also access the Study Plan for each section here. A link to your instructor or any of your classmates is available on the tool bar at the top of the page. What do I need to do to succeed in this online course? How do I do that? You need to do the same thing that you need to do in any course: learn and understand the material and demonstrate this understanding through your work on assignments and exams! You will need to learn the course material independently through the resources available to you. Those resources are as follows: Your instructor Do not hesitate to contact your instructor either by , phone, in person, or via the discussion board with questions on the course material Video lectures These are the same lectures that you might receive in an on-campus class covering this material. This is a great place to start your work on a topic. You can find a link to the video lecture for the material in each section of each chapter by clicking on the chapter and then the section in the navigation pane on the left side of the course web site. The Multimedia Textbook (and Exercise Set) This is essentially an online version of the paper text with some very useful added features. Alongside the material from the text you will find links to audio and video clips, practice problems (You Try It), and animations. This can be found in each section of each chapter on the course web site. The exercise set is essentially practice problems from the textbook. They not only offer feedback as to whether your responses are correct or not, but also stepby-step guided solutions and examples similar to these practice problems. Online practice exercises -- These exercises linked to the objectives in your Study Plan offer an opportunity to see how well you are comprehending the material. Each problem also offers a step-bystep guided solution, click the Help Me Solve This link, a similar example problem, click the View an

14 Example link, and a link to the section of the text which covers the objective, click the Textbook Pages link. Some practice exercises also offer links to animations which walk problems involving some of the same topics, click on the Animation link. Still other practice problems offer links to helpful video clips, click on the Video link. You will also find a link to Your Instructor whenever help is needed. These problems can be found be accessing your Study Plan or the Tracked Tutorial Exercises link in each section of each chapters What do I do if I have questions on the course material? Learning Center FAQs WHY SHOULD I USE THE LEARNING CENTER? Why not? It s free, and it s an opportunity to gain further understanding of course material and possibly earn a higher grade. WHEN IS TUTORING AVAILABLE? Check the campus schedule for details of availability. DO I NEED TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR TUTORING? No, tutoring is available on a walk-in basis. WHO ARE THE TUTORS? Professional tutors hold at least a bachelor s degree, and may be adjunct instructors on campus. Peer tutors are students who have successfully completed the course(s). WHAT KIND OF MATH HELP CAN I GET? Tutors can help you work through problems that are similar to ones on homework or review sheets, strengthen computation skills, practice problem solving, and highlight important concepts and material. WHAT KIND OF WRITING HELP CAN I GET? Tutors can help you plan and focus your paper, suggest ways of clarifying thesis statements and arguments or strengthen conclusions, point out repeated grammatical, mechanical, and punctuation errors, provide guidance with documentation, and provide references to textbooks and electronic sources. Tutors do not provide editing or proofreading services. WHAT OTHER SERVICES & RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE? Numerous software packages are available on Center computers for students to use at their convenience. Informational handouts on a variety of learning skills, such as note-taking, time management, study tips, and test preparation are also available. WHAT IS SMARTHINKING? Smarthinking is an online tutoring service provided for free for all currently registered HACC students. It offers tutoring in math (all levels), economics, accounting, chemistry, Spanish, and writing for all subjects. For login information, visit your campus Learning Center

15 In addition to getting help from your instructor or the Learning Center, HACC also provides access to SMARTHINKING, a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week online tutoring service. For more information go to the HACC s Virtual Campus web site at What do I do if I have technical problems? First, be sure that the necessary plug-ins have been installed and the internet browser is configured correctly on the computer with which you are working. You can do this by clicking on the Browser Check on the Support page. There is also a link in the Announcements. Then, contact your instructor with any technical problems (please include specific information). Your instructor will be able to help you with many simple technical issues. For more serious problems, contact MyMathLab product support. Information on contacting technical support can be found by clicking on the Support tab on the navigation pane on the left or the Tech Support link on the tool bar at the top of the page. When will I receive feedback from the instructor concerning test and assignments? How can I find out my grade? Any paper assignments or exams, except the final, will be graded and posted in the Gradebook as soon as possible. Check your online Gradebook to see how you are doing in the class!
