Mission Statement for NOC: Northern Oklahoma College Course Syllabus MATH 0123-Spring 2017 Fleshman MATH 0123 Intermediate Algebra Spring 2017 Northern Oklahoma College, the State s oldest community college, is a multi-campus, land-grant institution that provides high quality, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities and services which create life-changing experiences and develop students as effective learners and leaders within their communities in a connected, ever-changing world. 2. Course Title: MATH 0123-Intermediate Algebra Division of Mathematics: Cassie Firth, Chair Course Description: Designed to provide in-depth applications of algebra necessary to complete college-level mathematics. Intermediate Algebra includes topics such as factoring, rational expressions, simplifying radical expressions, quadratic equations and graphing linear equations in two variables. This course meets the deficiency requirements for students who do not meet entrance requirements by either high school course work or equivalent placement scores. Prerequisite: C or better in MATH 0023 Concepts of Algebra or equivalent placement scores. Prerequisites: None. Course Format: Lecture with guided practice and daily internet-based homework. 3. Course Objectives: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to: Use elementary algebra skills to solve linear and literal equations, simplify using properties of exponents, and factor polynomials. Solve rational expressions by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing. Simplify complex fractions and solve proportions. Reduce roots and radical expressions. Add, subtract, multiply and divide radical expressions. Solve radical equations. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers. Solve quadratic equations by factoring, square roots property, completing the square, or the quadratic formula. Graph the equation of a line. Determine x- and y-intercepts of an equation. Find the slope of a line and determine slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines. Solve systems of equations in two variables using graphing, substitution, and eliminations methods. Translate real-life application problems into equations and solve using appropriate methods and critical thinking.

2 5. Textbook(s) and Materials: Fleshman MATH 0123 Intermediate Algebra Spring 2017 Textbook(s): Algebra: Introductory and Intermediate-An Applied Approach 6e, Aufmann and Lockwood. (Note: A physical copy of the textbook is not required) Course Materials: 1)WebAssign access code (purchase at bookstore or online at 2)computer with internet access, and 3)note-taking materials. 6. Course Policies: Attendance is an absolute requirement for your success in this course. Therefore, attendance will be monitored closely. Please do not come in late or leave early. If there is a problem, you need to visit with the instructor before or after class. Please note: an absence is an absence no matter the reason, including absences due to illness or emergency For campus safety and to maintain an appropriate learning environment, no children are allowed to attend class with their parents. Institutional Attendance Policy: Instructors may administratively withdraw any student who does not attend a single class within the first two weeks of the semester or who does not attend at least 75% of instructional time within weeks Instructors may also establish a more stringent attendance policy that will preempt the minimum of 75% if it is included in the class syllabus; however, students, not instructors, are responsible for safeguarding their transcripts by dropping classes they are no longer attending or withdrawing from the college if needed. When bad weather requires one or all of the Northern campuses to close, information will be posted on the NOC website and also be announced through area radio and television stations. Instructors will post any additional information needed for individual classes on Blackboard. Students are also responsible for reading and following academic policies on Academic Integrity and Use of Cell Phones and Electronic Devices, as well as policy on Use of Tobacco Products. These policies are found on our website at Student Responsibilities: 1) Attend class-arrive to class on time, 2) Participate in class-ask questions, answer questions, take good notes, 3) Complete assignments outside of class, on timeutilize tutoring center services properly as required or instructed. 4)Avoid developing bad study habits-including the mis-use of online homework helps such as Mathway, Google, etc. 7. Course Grading Policies: Grading Scale: Grades will be determined solely by calculating the percentage of available points earned in the course. Obtaining less than 70% of the points available will not remediate your math deficiency. A = % ( points) B = 80-89% ( points) C = 70-79% ( points) D = 60-69% ( points) F = 0-59% (0-599 points) Examination Schedule: See Course Schedule and Assignments. Any changes to exam dates will be announced in class at least one week before the exam. The final exam will be administered according to the NOC Stillwater Final Exam Schedule. Page! 2

3 Procedures for Determining Grades: Grades will be calculated using a simple points system as outlined above; however, students must demonstrate proficiency by achieving a satisfactory score on the final exam in order to receive a passing grade for the course: Exams = 100 points each (5) 500 points total Comprehensive Common Final Exam points Homework = 10 points per section assignment (28) 280 points total and In-Class Exercises=2 points each (9) 18 points total Quiz Remediation=2 points (1) - 2 points Homework for each section of each chapter will be completed using WebAssign outside of class and is due by midnight on the date shown on the course schedule following and coordinated in Webassign. WebAssign allows for automatic and other emergency-related extension requests, but late work will be penalized. Quizzes, also on WebAssign, are designed to be completed out of class for exam preparation. the quiz items after completing a quiz to understand your mistakes (ask questions if needed). Quizzes will not be available after the beginning of the chapter exam. Exams are to be taken on the scheduled date. Failure to do so could result in not passing the course. Arrangements to make up exams missed as the result of an emergency must be made by the next class meeting (You must contact your instructor by the day of exam providing details of the emergency). No graphing calculators, cell phones, other web pages, or other electronic devices may be used during exams or other assessments. Only scientific calculators may be used. Violations will be treated as academic dishonesty with penalties including dismissal from this course and/or the college. It is in your best interest to stay on track. Complete homework on WebAssign each day immediately after the lecture, taking advantage of the tutoring as required. Work through the review quizzes and study guides for exam preparation. Do not abuse extension requests and get behind as it will reduce your learning effectiveness!!! Extra Credit Course Policy: No extra credit work will be possible. Your effort should be in doing the best work possible at all times. Outside Work: It is expected that you will spend an extra 1-3 hours per class meeting outside of class time in order to stay on track working in the tutoring center is recommended. Mandatory work in the tutoring center may be assigned if you fail to complete work on schedule, make acceptable progress on exams, or effectively participate in class.. 8. Statement of Student Support: If you believe you have a disability of any type, please let me know within the first two weeks of class so I can work cooperatively with you and the Counseling Office to provide reasonable and fair opportunities for you to be a productive and successful learner in this course. It is your responsibility as a student to notify the Counseling Office of your disability.
