Equipment: Graphing calculator, TI-84 or TI-84+ Note: Calculators with computer algebra systems such as the TI-92, TI-89 or TI-Nspire are not allowed unless allowed by the instructor. Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: 1. Solve systems of linear equations involving two or three variables and use the techniques developed to solve problems. 2. Solve various types of equations and inequalities (including but not limited to linear, absolute value, and quadratic). 3. Use interval notation to write the solution of an inequality. 4. Use function notation to evaluate various types of functions (including but not limited to polynomial, quadratic, and radical). 5. Solve problems by identifying what information is available and relevant to the problem. 6. Solve problems by selecting or developing appropriate procedures and relationships. 7. Solve problems by correctly applying the methods selected to the information available. 8. Solve problems by verifying the validity and appropriateness of the solution.

2 Program and course assessment activities are deployed and results collected in accordance with the College s assessment schedule. Please refer to the information in the syllabus regarding the applicability of the assessment activity for the current semester. Course Outcomes and Competencies: Intended Course Outcome 1: Students should meet the general education core competency in mathematics. Course Competency 1: Students should be able to evaluate and solve systematically problems requiring computational skills, quantitative reasoning and symbolic reasoning. Intended Course Outcome 2: Students should be adequately prepared to be successful in mathematics courses that will transfer to senior colleges and universities. Course Competency 2: Students should be able to solve mathematical problems at the beginning and intermediate algebra level by identifying what information is available and relevant to the problem; by selecting or developing appropriate procedures and relationships; by correctly applying the methods selected to the information available; and by verifying the validity and appropriateness of the solution. Performance Measurement Instrument: Students will be given four applied mathematical problems to solve selected by the Mathematics Department to measure successful attainment of the competency. These problems will be embedded within student chapter tests and the final exam. A student scoring at least 3 out of 4 will be considered to have successfully attained the competency. The goal is for 80% of the students completing the assessment to successfully attain the competency. Online Course Attendance: Since online sections do not meet in class, attendance is monitored on MyMathLab. There are three ways the instructor will withdraw a student from class: 1. Any student will be dropped from the course as a No-Show if they have not logged onto MyMathLab and complete the Orientation Quiz with a grade of 100% by 8/26/16 at 1:00pm. 2. If a student does not complete an assignment on MyMathLab for a period of 15 days 3. If a student has missed two tests. Please note the following: You are responsible for all material and announcements presented, whether you are present or absent. Withdrawal: Should the maximum allowable absences be exceeded prior to midterm, a "W" will be submitted to the registrar to be recorded on the student's transcript. Should the maximum allowable absences be exceeded after midterm, a "W" will be submitted to the registrar if the student was passing

3 the course at the time of withdrawal OR a "WF" will be submitted if the student was failing the course at the time of withdrawal. No Shows: If you register for a course and decide not to attend for any reason, you must complete a drop form and process it through the student Records Office. You will not be automatically purged for non-attendance. If you do not submit a drop form, you will be responsible for course tuition and fees. By not officially dropping the course, you will incur a bill with the college that can only be addressed through the College s Finance Office. The college s refund policy and dates are posted each semester. Effective Spring 2015, the Student Ombudsman s office will no longer be the initial point of contact for requesting No Shows to be processed. Students who incur a bill must contact the Finance Office. Administrative Drop Requests: A student requesting an Administrative Drop resulting from medical event, death of family member, and other extenuating circumstances experienced while enrolled at Midlands Technical College should be directed to the Student Ombudsman s office. Our policy dictates a request must be made no later than 30 days after the affected term. Supporting documentation is required and must be received before the request can be processed. Once the request form is received along with supporting documentation, it takes approximately three weeks for processing. As a result of an approved Administrative Drop Request, the student may be granted a refund of tuition and fees. Military Withdrawal: According to College Procedure , students having to withdraw from college because of Military Deployment (active duty personnel) while enrolled must complete a withdrawal form and submit to the Records Office along with a copy of military orders. Disabilities Statement: At MTC, the Disability Services office operates within Counseling and Career Services. It is the student s responsibility to self-disclose as a student with a disability and to request accommodations through Disability Services. If a student requests accommodations for a disability through a faculty or staff member, they will be referred to Disability Services to complete the request. 4 Academic Dishonesty: For more information about academic dishonesty, see the Academic Affairs Student Guidelines and Expectations. If a student or students are suspected of cheating, the instructor will inform you. You may explain or refute the allegation. If instructor still thinks the charges are founded, you will be referred to the Office of the Associate Vice President of Student Development Services. Documentation is submitted to the Office of the AVP, SDS, by the instructor. You will then meet with either Dr. Holloway or Mr. Hayden. After the meeting, you will receive a letter with the sanction grade of zero (0) and any other sanctions deemed appropriate. Student has a right to file an appeal. Once the hearing and the notice of the right to appeal have been completed, instructor will be notified to apply the sanction grade of zero (0). Course Requirements: This is a hybrid course. Students will be required to have a MyMathLab account. This software will be used for all assignments in the course (homework, quizzes, and tests). MyMathLab: All assignments have a due date posted on MyMathLab. HOMEWORK: The purpose of homework is to help you learn the material. There will be a homework assignment for each section covered in the textbook. There are infinitely many attempts allowed for each homework problem. Quizzes: The purpose of quizzes is to let you know whether you have learned the material. There will be one or two quizzes for each chapter. Each quiz can be taken infinitely many times where only the highest grade will count. Tests: The purpose of tests is the let me know whether you have learned the material. There are five chapter tests in this course. Tests must be completed on any MTC campus in the Assessment Center. Tests can only be reviewed after the due date has past. It is the student s responsibility to complete each test according to the Assessment Center s hours of operation. Tests can be reviewed on MyMathLab any time after the due date has past.

5 **THE TEST PROBLEMS COME DIRECTLY FROM THE QUIZZES!! That means the problems you see on the test are regenerated problems from the quizzes for that chapter. They are same problem with different numbers. So if a quiz problem was 2x + 3 = 6, a problem on the test might be 4x + 5 = 9. I have had the tests setup like this for a number of years, but this is the first time I am letting students know about it. Course Grading: There will be 700 possible points for the course. 50 homework 50 quizzes 500 tests 1-5 (100 pts. each) 100 final exam Grading Scale: Students can see their current average in the course at any time in the Gradebook in MyMathLab A Superior Work B Good Work C Average Work D Below Average Work 0 F Unsatisfactory Work There will be NO make-ups! If you do not complete an assignment or test FOR ANY REASON by the scheduled deadline, you will receive a zero. However, at the end of the semester your final exam grade can count twice.
