1 Campus Ratings for Rebecca Creek Elementary School Background Information Community & Student Engagement Under House Bill 5 (passed last year by the 83 rd Texas Legislature), all districts are required to evaluate the district s performance and the performance of each campus in regard to community and student engagement. Districts must assign one of four performance ratings Exemplary, Recognized, Acceptable or Unacceptable to the district and each campus for overall performance, including the following categories: Fine arts; Wellness and physical education; Community and parental involvement; 21 st Century Workforce Development program; Second language acquisition program; Digital learning environment; Dropout prevention strategies; and Educational programs for gifted and talented students. House Bill 5 requires a local committee or committees to determine the criteria that the district uses to evaluate and assign performance ratings and to evaluate the district s compliance with statutory reporting and policy requirements. In Comal Independent School District, the District Educational Improvement Council (DEIC) developed the rating criteria and the campus sitebased decision-making teams determined the ratings for each category. Under House Bill 5, districts must post the ratings and compliance status for the district and each campus on the school district s website by August 8, 2014.

We opened the year with a promise to respect the history and culture of our school community and to challenge ourselves to continue to improve. 3 Fine Arts The Fine Arts program at Rebecca Creek Elementary consists of a dedicated team of teachers who are passionate and collaborative. They create opportunities for students and families to be involved in the Arts. This year RCES hosted A Very Specials Night, which exposed parents to our Fine Arts and Physical Education curriculum. Parent participated with their children as they rotated through stations in each content area. Our students participated in the CISD Art Showcase and their pieces were displayed at Support Services. Selected students and their family members were invited to attend a School Board Meeting to recognize and honor our students' contributions. We look forward to implementing an afterschool Strings Program for 4 th and 5 th grade students in the school year! 4 Wellness & Physical Education Wellness and Physical Education have been a focus for our students, community and staff and Rebecca Creek Elementary has much to celebrate. RCES organized our First Annual 5K North Shore Shuffle and it was a huge success! Local businesses, community members, school board members, students, parents and staff members throughout CISD attended. We are planning for increased participation every year. Our Field Day was planned with a focus on inclusiveness and fun, allowing many opportunities for physical activity, healthy competition, team building and class and school-wide spirit. Laps For Little Hawks is our afterschool community running club that is staff-initiated and sponsored. We had school-wide support and participation in all grade levels for Marathon Kids. Our campus was awarded the Spring 2014 Comal Fit Series trophy. Our nurse was invited to attend two conferences, Healthy Schools and Fuel Up to Play 360, and accepted the Healthy Schools Bronze Award on behalf of RCES. We are looking to bring home the Healthy Schools Silver Award in the near future! Overall Wellness & Physical Education -- Exemplary Opportunities to learn about making healthy life choices are provided Participation in voluntary health and wellness events Participation in UIL-sponsored competitions Availability of school nurses Availability of school counselors Character education evidenced as part of campus culture Availability of recess to elementary students 4 P a g e

5 Community & Parental Involvement Rebecca Creek Elementary parents, community, local businesses, PTA, Parent Support Specialist, Mentors and Watch DOGS have been very involved and supportive. Your dedication and contributions are paramount to quality learning environment. We have held countless events throughout the year including parent luncheons, trainings for parents on topics such as how to help their child with homework, potluck celebrations for volunteers, our annual Grandparents Day luncheon, cookout picnic lunches for families and monthly community dinners at area restaurants. We look forward to continued collaboration in planning even more school-wide and community events and celebrations in the school year. Thank you for partnering with us! 6 21 st Century Workforce Development Program Rebecca Creek Elementary s goal is to expand our students experiences beyond the walls of our school to include opportunities that will enrich learning for all students, community and staff members. We plan to include future opportunities for career exploration. We look forward to inviting parents and community members to share their career experiences and expertise. RCES will implement a Project Room for students and teachers to have access to technology and tools in a space that is conducive to collaborative work and communication. 7 Second Language Acquisition Programs Staff members at Rebecca Creek Elementary who serve our English Language Learners (ELLs) are ESL certified and highly qualified. We welcome community members and parents to serve on the Second Language Acquisition Task Force. We will work closely with our Parent Support Specialist and survey our parents and community members as we continuously improve our Second Language Acquisition Program. 8 Digital Learning Environment Rebecca Creek Elementary s goal is to reach exemplary status in creating a digital learning environment, as almost every aspect of our daily lives utilizes technology. We will focus on fluency with programs such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel and keyboarding skills, so that our students are well prepared to utilize technology as an effective tool of choice. Our goal is to embed technology when teaching content and expect that our students will naturally embed technology in their research, presentations, compositions and projects. 9 Dropout Prevention Strategies Rebecca Creek Elementary s Campus Discipline Community & Student Engagement and Attendance Committee has been formed to develop a school-wide positive behavior system following a book study on "No More Taking Away Recess". This committee will also streamline our expectations for proactive steps to ensure increased attendance percentages in all grade levels. We have implemented weekly grade level attendance incentives and also present award certificates for attendance at the end of each grading cycle. We hold a Perfect Attendance Celebration with the Spring Branch Fire Department. RCES will continue to communicate with parents regarding attendance and be proactive with communication prior to attendance becoming an issue. Overall Dropout Prevention Strategies -- Recognized The use of early warning indicators, including the 13 criteria for students being at-risk of dropping out of school Availability of high-quality, engaging classroom instruction and extracurricular activities Availability of mentors for students Implementation of positive behavior systems and reduction in rate of student removal from class Students targeted for truancy prevention in response to high number of absences 9 P a g e

10 Educational Program for Gifted & Talented Students Rebecca Creek Elementary s SAGE Program (Significant Activities for Generating Excellence) serves identified gifted and talented students. Our GT teacher is utilized as a resource to all teachers for sharing strategies and tools when creating meaningful and challenging projects. All students benefit from higher order thinking skills, problem solving, puzzles, challenges, projects, robotics, presentations, Legos, research, communication and collaboration. We continue to explore richer opportunities for students to share, model, present and showcase their knowledge and communications skills.
