Equip yourself to work as a professional interpreter and/ or translator on this highly respected master s, which can include a placement. Our is designed to give you strong grounding and all the practical skills you need to work as a conference interpreter and professional translator at an international level. You must have an excellent understanding of two languages and can choose from one of two pathways: path 1 allows you to work with two other languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish) into English path 2 allows you to work in both directions between Chinese/English This master s is highly respected internationally for the quality of the training. Many Bath graduates have gone on to work in organisations such as the EU and UN, as well as other language services around the world. The course covers professional translation and different types of interpreting, including simultaneous and consecutive interpreting and liaison in both public and commercial settings. You ll have access to the latest digital interpreting suites, and will participate in mini-conferences to put your skills into practice, holding debates on controversial topics and acting as both delegate and interpreter. In many cases we can arrange a unique placement in an international organisation such as the EU and UN or another independent agency, giving you first-hand experience of the workplace and valuable contacts for building your career. Bath has a memorandum of understanding with the UN and European Parliament for training interpreters and translators, which means their trainers visit us regularly. This will give you a unique insight into the skills needed to work in those organisations. The course is taught by highly experienced tutors who have all worked as professional translators and interpreters themselves. Many have interpreted for heads of state and government ministers, and work for international organisations. As such, they can share a wealth of experience with you and provide useful connections, including potential job opportunities. You will leave with: a proven ability to work with varied and challenging texts and speeches, providing a strong foundation for working at an international level practical skills, such as experience of working to deadlines and using style guides contacts with potential employers and colleagues from your placement contacts with our strong alumni network of linguists who work in international organisations, private bodies and independent agencies evidence of translation skills, including the 10,000-word translation and 5,000-word commentary you ll complete at the end of the taught part of the course. 2 3

3 Key Facts 4 Course structure diagram Consecutive interpreting Learn the skills needed to interpret challenging speeches confidently from one language to another in front of an audience using brief notes. Classes take place in the University s interpreting suite. Consecutive interpreting Continued as an all year core unit. This unit is taught in the University s state-of-theart labs, using professional equipment. In semester two, your skills with be reinforced in a series of mini-conferences involving speakers of all languages provided. Optional unit: Public speaking Optional units: Using technology in the T & I Industry Professional translation II Semester 2 (February to May) Simultaneous interpreting Continued as an all year core unit. Professional translation I Working with authentic materials to hone the fundamental skills and techniques that are required to embark on a career as a professional translator. Semester 3 (June to September) Dissertation - 15,000-word thesis: annotated translation or a project type You will undertake a 15,000-word project (or 18,000 Chinese characters), which will take the form of either an analytical thesis or a translation and commentary. Liaison and public service interpreting An exciting unit that requires students to work into and out of one of their foreign languages. You will facilitate communication between a native English speaker and a non-speaker of English. Liaison and public service interpreting Continued as an all year core unit. Learning and Teaching The teaching at Bath is highly regarded internationally. You will be taught exclusively by experienced tutors who have worked as professional translators and/or interpreters; many have interpreted for heads of state and government ministers and work for global organisations such as the EU and UN. As such, they can share a wealth of experience with you and provide useful connections to help with potential job opportunities and internships. We also regularly arrange visits from representatives of the language services of international organisations, government departments and commercial enterprises, to give you insights into their working practices. Placements Through our extensive network of contacts we try to organise placements for all students with the language services of international organisations, government departments or translation companies. They provide an invaluable insight into the work of professional linguists and are highly valued by employers. However, they are not compulsory and not always guaranteed. Our students have previously undertaken placements in the United Nations, institutions of the European Union, and some imminent private companies. Graduate Prospects The is a highly vocational course with a worldwide reputation for training professional translators and conference interpreters. Our graduates have excellent employment prospects. While some have found rewarding jobs in smaller companies and institutions, or chosen to work as freelancers, many have gone on to pursue stimulating careers as professional translators and interpreters with major international organisations. Duration 1 year full-time. Entry requirements Mainland China A four-year Bachelor s degree with a final overall score of at least 80% depending on the institution attended. Taiwan A Bachelor s degree with a final overall score of at least 75-80% (GPA or B) depending on the university attended. UK Typical offer Bachelor s honours degree or international equivalent of a 2:1 or above. To apply for this course, you must normally have mother tongue competence in Chinese or English. We may make an offer based on a lower grade if you can provide evidence of your suitability for the degree. If your first language is not English but within the last 2 years, you completed your degree in the UK, you may be exempt from our English language requirements. English requirements IELTS: 7.5 overall with no less than 7.0 in the speaking component and no less than 6.5 in the writing, listening and reading components The Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic): 76 with no less than 69 in the speaking element and no less than 62 in the writing, listening and reading elements TOEFL IBT: 108 overall with a minimum 27 in the speaking component and a minimum of 24 in the writing, listening and reading components Interviews All applicants will be further assessed for their suitability before acceptance to the course (you will be contacted individually regarding this process). 4 Teaching Team and MA Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese) 6 I work as the Section Chief of the International Cooperation Department of CSG (China Southern Power Grid). My duties involve providing interpretation and translation services for the Board of Directors, organising and participating in international conferences, enhancing exchanges and communication with international organisations, relevant government ministries, counterpart enterprises and strategic partners, running the English website of our company and other administrative work. CSG, as a key state-owned enterprise, is a great platform to broaden my horizon and sharpen my skills, and the course at Bath was a stepping stone for me to secure this job. I appreciate my time at Bath and the course taught by the Department. I believe it will open more doors for me as well as for other students in the future. Xinlong Yao Graduate 2014 Jane Ping Francis Jane is a Course Director for the Chinese stream of the MA in Interpreting and Translating. Jane teaches on the MA in Interpreting and Translating and MA in Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese). She joined the University in 1998 and started the MA in Interpreting and Translating (Chinese). Alongside directing and teaching on the course, she also works, on a freelance basis as a conference interpreter, for the United Nations in Vienna, Geneva, Nairobi and Rome, and for the EU institutions, including the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg. She is a full member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists and AIIC (International Association for Conference Interpreters). Dr Yukteshwar Kumar Yukteshwar joined the Department in 2007 and is a Course Director for the Chinese stream of the MA in Interpreting and Translating. He teaches on the MA in Interpreting and Translating and MA in Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese). He has been involved in teaching Chinese literature, Chinese language pedagogy and translation and interpreting activities for more than 21 years. He has interpreted for top Chinese and Indian political and business leaders and authored several articles and books on social, political and diplomatic aspect of China and learning Chinese. Aside from interpreting at several international conferences, he has also translated several academic articles from Chinese into English and contributed in international journals and books. Miguel Fialho Miguel is the Course Director for the MA in Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese). He studied Modern Chinese at Durham University and the MA in Interpreting and Translating at the University of Bath. He joined the Department in 2013 after teaching conference interpreting at the Sino-EU Interpreters Training Centre at the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing for eight years. He has also worked as a freelance interpreter and translator since Miguel teaches on the MA in Interpreting and Translating and MA in Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese). He is an EU-accredited conference interpreter (Chinese-English) and works for the European Council, Commission and Parliament as a freelance interpreter. He also interprets for the Portuguese government in high-level state visits to China. The core teaching staff list and information is correct at the time of printing but can be subject to change. Our MA Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese) is a highly competitive, sought-after master s, ideal for those with an interest and aptitude for translation or business interpreting. You may be working already as a translator and interpreter in Mainland China, Taiwan, the UK or elsewhere, or looking to establish yourself with the specialist skills needed to excel in this profession. The focus of the course is on written translation from English to Chinese and Chinese to English, as well as business interpreting between English and Chinese. In particular, you ll develop translation and interpreting skills suited to working in business and tailored to market needs in Mainland China, Taiwan, the UK and other regions. The course is highly practical so you ll have plenty of opportunities to hone and develop your skills. You will: gain extensive experience in translating a wide range of texts, from general business communications to specialist and technical materials take part in weekly simulated real life business liaison scenarios to enhance your interpreting and negotiation capabilities gain practical experience of translation management software develop sought-after and important business skills such as editing and proofreading gain useful insights into marketing yourself as a freelance translator and interpreter. Placements You may have the opportunity to go on a placement in Semester 2. Several of our students have completed threeweek to two-month-long translation internships at the UN in London, New York and Geneva. However, they are not compulsory and not always guaranteed. Graduate Prospects Studying on this course will give you the in-depth training needed to work as a Chinese-English translator and interpreter in a variety of contexts, with a strong focus on translation and interpreting for business. You may go on to work as a freelance translator and interpreter and potentially set up your own translation and interpreting business. You could also work as an in-house interpreter or translator, teach at a university or take your skills into other fields. We also have an extremely active alumni network and tight-knit community that shares career advice. This enables us to help with short-term interpreting and translation opportunities supported by recent graduates. The course structure reflects the changing nature of the worldwide marketplace, where a large number of translators with business and enterprise skills are in need. This course has a strong focus on translation and interpreting in the business world, with core units including liaison interpreting, bidirectional English-Chinese translation and using computer-assisted translation tools. Yang Tang MA Translation with Business Interpreting (Chinese) Graduate 2017 In summer 2017, Yang Tang completed a 2-month-long translation internship at the United Nations in Geneva. Duration 1 year full-time. Entry requirements Mainland China A four-year Bachelor s degree with a final overall score of at least 80% depending on the institution attended. Taiwan A Bachelor s degree with a final overall score of at least 75-80% (GPA or B) depending on the university attended. Proofreading, editing and management skills for translators and interpreters (Chinese) A new unit that aims to provide students with key proofreading and editing skills required in many in-house and freelance jobs. This unit also gives students necessary individual and team management skills that can better prepare them for the workplace or freelance market. Semester 2 (February to May) Liaison interpreting for business (Chinese/English) Continued as an all year core unit. Chinese to English translation for business Continued as an all year core unit. English to Chinese translation for business Continued as an all year core unit. Advanced translation (Chinese) Working with advanced, specialised texts to consolidate translation techniques, enabling students to delve deeper into the world of professional translation. Using technology in the translation industry (Chinese) Familiarises students with the latest translation software and provides key skills that allow students to work more efficiently in a rapidly evolving market. Our teachers are experts in the field, as well as being translators and interpreters themselves, so we can learn from their up-to-date experiences. We not only learn from our teachers but our classmates also give us great stimulation and we continually learn from each other. My favourite unit is Liaison Interpreting because the content is very interesting and practical. We interpret daily content and situations in different industries and sectors, which pushes us to be open-minded and move out of our comfort zone. What s more, our teachers arrange regular theme-based workshops, which are relevant to our study and address any areas we re struggling with, which enables us to make significant progress!
