Once accepted on a course with us, and in order to complete an AAT course, you will need to pay to be registered with AAT before your course commences. Level 2 Foundation Certification in Bookkeeping: *NO FEE if you are in receipt of: Job Seekers Allowance Employment Support Allowance: Universal Credit: You will need to bring evidence of your benefit at your first appointment for audit purposes. (including those receiving National Insurance credits only) a) Work activity group (WRAG) a) All work related groups b) Work Preparation group c) Work Focused interview group Level 2 Certificate in accounting no fee remission available full fee due for all students. There is an instalment plan available (details can be requested either at interview or enrolment). #Level 3 bookkeeping: You can apply for funding via the Student Loan Service using an Advanced Learner Loan: To take out an Advanced Learner Loan, you have to have a confirmed place at college. More information is available upon request or at: You will have to register with AAT yourself separately as this would not be included in the loan amount. 3 When can I apply? January 2018 courses: September 2018 courses: Application forms will be available from 13 th November 2017 until the course is deemed to be full. Application forms will be available from 21st May 2018 until the course is deemed to be full. What happens at the initial assessment? The course will be fully described to you detailing what you can expect to learn and what software packages you will be using. You will be asked to complete a short maths assessment and also complete a short word processing exercise to show you have basic level skills. Other materials you may need to complete a course: If there is a text book recommended by the tutor, this will be available to loan from the Learning Centre. You will be taken to join the Learning Centre in the first weeks of starting a course. You will need stationery: pencils, pens, ruler, calculator, pad for notes and a folder if you want to store handouts safely. Registering with AAT In order to complete an AAT course you will have to register with them before the course commences. You will be asked to complete a registration form which will include questions about you, your personal details etc. Once completed you will be asked to pay a subscription fee and will be given an AAT student registration number/log in. Please note: The registration questionnaire will also covers questions concerning any bankruptcy, debt relief, and criminal activities. Depending upon your answers to questions of this nature, you may or may not be accepted for registration. If you are not accepted for registration you would unfortunately not be able to complete an AAT course and your enrolment would be declined. Cont d

6 AAT Bookkeeping: intermediate level (level 2) This qualification is designed to give you a thorough grounding in double-entry bookkeeping and basic accounting practices. Study it as a standalone, or as the natural mid-point between the introductory and advanced bookkeeping qualifications. Success in this qualification means you ll be awarded the Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping. The intermediate level will suit you if: You ve completed the introductory level and want to build on your skills You re already working in finance and you want an industry-recognised qualification You d like to work in bookkeeping with a large finance department or as an independent professional You run your own business and you d prefer to do your own bookkeeping. How long you will study: Intermediate level: approximately 24 weeks For these qualifications you can study at Aquinas College in the evenings, part-time and classes generally take place between 6 and 9 pm depending on the level. 7 What you ll learn on the introductory level The introductory level consists of four units: 1. Introduction to bookkeeping Understanding the job role and career path for a bookkeeper Understanding different types of business organisations Knowing the terminology used in bookkeeping 2. Working within bookkeeping Understanding single-entry bookkeeping Knowing the general principles of VAT Understanding what is meant by both cash and credit transactions Understanding the principles of coding and batch control Understanding how to process information in the books of prime entry (excluding the journal) Understanding responsibilities when working in a bookkeeping environment 3. Bookkeeping and accounts Knowing how to complete financial documents Recording cash and credit transactions in books of original entry Preparing bank reconciliation Understanding the petty cash imprest system Extracting a trial balance from ledger accounts What you ll learn on the intermediate level The intermediate level consists of two units: 1. Processing bookkeeping transactions Understanding double-entry bookkeeping, integrating books of prime entry and describing coding system functions Understanding discounts and settlement, trade and bulk discount differences Preparing and processing customer and supplier invoices and credit notes Totalling and balancing a 3-column analysed cash book Totalling, balancing and reconciling petty cash records within an analysed petty cash book Processing ledger transactions and extracting a trial balance 2. Control accounts, journals and the banking system Understanding the purpose and use of control accounts and journals Maintaining and using control accounts and the journal Reconciling a bank statement with the cash book Understanding the banking process and main services of banks and building societies Understanding requirements of retention and storage relating to banking documents 4. Spreadsheet software Using a spreadsheet to enter, edit and organise numerical and other data Using appropriate formulas and tools to summarise and display spreadsheet information Selecting and using appropriate tools and techniques to present spreadsheet information effectively
8 AAT Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping: (level 3) The Advanced Certificate in Bookkeeping develops existing skills and knowledge to an advanced level for anyone wishing to pursue a career in bookkeeping. The course offers progression for those who already have bookkeeping knowledge a foundation level, either to gain employment in a bookkeeping role or to further study eg: (a professional bookkeeper; a senior bookkeeper; an accounts manager; a ledger manager). The course is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment. How long you will study: Advanced Certificate: approximately 35 weeks For this qualification you can study at Aquinas College in the evenings, part-time and classes take place between 6 and 9 pm. The advanced certificate level will suit you if: You re a practicing or part-qualified bookkeeper who already has a basic knowledge of manual bookkeeping You re looking for new finance administration skills to enhance your career prospects You own a small business and want a basic understanding of computerised accounting.
9 What you ll learn on the advanced level The advanced level consists of three units: 1. Advanced Bookkeeping Double entry bookkeeping Acquisition and disposal of non-current assets Prepare and record depreciation calculations Record period end adjustments Produce and extend the trial balance 3. Indirect Tax Understand and apply VAT legislation requirements Accurately complete VAT returns and submit them in a timely manner Understand implications for the business of errors, omissions and late filing and payment Report VAT-related information within the organisation in accordance with regulatory and organisation requirement. 2. Final Accounts Preparation Distinguish between financial recording and reporting requirements of different types of organisation Explain the need for final accounts/accounting and ethical principles underlying their preparation Prepare accounting records from incomplete information Produce accounts for sole traders Produce accounts for partnerships Key differences between preparing accounts for a limited company and a sole -trader.
10 Why Study AAT Accounting? The AAT Level 2 Foundation Accounting qualification is an ideal starting point for anyone wishing to pursue a career in accountancy or finance. The purpose of this qualification is to offer grounding in the core accounting knowledge and skills needed to progress either to employment or to further study. It is suitable to younger students or adults returning to work after a break or wishing to change career. It is open to those who are working and those who are not currently in employment. It could also help someone who is already working in an entry-level finance role to progress in their career by offering them development and formal recognition of skills. You will develop accountancy skills in double-entry bookkeeping and basic costing, as well as an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. You will learn to use accounting software and to develop the professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute in the workplace. You will require good communication skills, IT skills and an understanding of the business environment. AAT recommends that you begin your studies with a good standard of English and maths (level 2, functional skills or GCSE).
