2 SOUTH LYON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY/MEDIA SPECIALIST QUALIFICATIONS: REPORTS TO: JOB SUMMARY: 1. Valid Michigan teaching certificate 2. A Master's degree or higher, with a Library/Media endorsement required 3. At least three years of successful experience as a classroom teacher 4. Prefer advanced training in curriculum and technology High School Principal The library/media specialist manages the library media center and its services and implements the automated library and media retrieval system for optimum accessibility and inventory control. The professional media specialist provides instruction in the utilization of a wide variety of learning resources for students and staff. The library/media specialist plans with teachers to integrate and teach information processing and media literacy in the curriculum. He/she reports to the building principal and collaborates closely with the educational technology coordinator. ESSENTIAL DUTIES/ RESPONSIBILITIES: Instructional Functions 1. Plans integrated lessons cooperatively with classroom teachers. 2. Provides instruction to students and staff in the use and applications of technologies in individual and group situations. Automated catalog and circulation system Computer and computer related skills (i.e. Internet, CD ROMS, software programs, online services, electronic indexes, etc.) Multi-media production Instructional technology support 3. Team teaches with classroom teachers to integrate information processing, media literacy and technology skills with the classroom curriculum. 4. Works collaboratively with teachers in the integration of instructional technology. 5. Provides reading, viewing and listening guidance. 6. Provides orientation for faculty and students via ongoing inservice programs. 7. Maintains and promotes professional library for faculty.
3 High School Library/Media Specialist Page 2 Media Center Management 1. Maintains a flexible and open schedule for optimum access to the library/media center. 2. Coordinates daily operation of the library/media center. 3. Manages automated library and media retrieval system. 4. Evaluates, selects and purchases all media utilizing professional review sources, and faculty recommendation. 5. Organizes and maintains records of media acquisitions, circulation, etc., for inventory, maintenance, and certification purposes. 6. Trains and supervises library/media center support staff. 7. Trains, schedules and supervises student aides and adult volunteers. 8. Plans and supervises the distribution and storage of all media materials and equipment to provide maximum access for faculty and students. 9. Promotes the library/media center program, informing staff, school and community. 10. Implements related district policies. 11. Attends staff meetings, inservice sessions and district library/media specialist meetings. 12. Plans curriculum related library/media activities. 13. Manages the library/media center budget. 14. Supervises and schedules equipment repair. 15. Evaluates the library/media center program annually 16. Assists with library/media center and building remodeling and/or planning to insure appropriate application of technology.
4 High School Library/Media Specialist Page 3 Leadership/Curriculum/Staff Development 1. Keeps classroom teachers and principals abreast of new developments and emerging technologies. 2. Provides technology leadership at the building level. 3. Serves on curriculum review teams and attends curriculum inservice sessions. 4. Surveys teaching staff to help determine media center resource needs. Support Functions 1. Serves as building resource consultant for teachers and students. 2. Provides curriculum materials and bibliographies for classroom use. 3. Recommends print and non print resources for various curriculums. 4. Provides and maintains a variety of production materials, equipment and services for staff. Competencies and Capabilities 1. Skill and sensitivity in working with all members of the school community. 2. Flexibility and ability to adapt to change. 3. Ability to plan, organize and execute the full range of tasks associated with the library/media center program. 4. Competencies in new and emerging technologies: Automated catalog and circulation system Electronic indexes as appropriate (i.e. InfoTrac, SIRS, etc.) Computer operation and software applications Internet access and searching
5 High School Library/Media Specialist Page 4 Necessary Skills Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, journals, technical procedures and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write for various purposes. Ability to effectively present material and respond to questions. Skilled in oral and written communication. Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with concepts like probability and inference. Ability to apply concepts like fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Reasoning Ability: Able to solve problems and interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply current research and theory to the instructional program. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on curriculum and the needs and abilities of students. Able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
