Office: CMS 021 o Prerequisite: Math 121 and Math 125 or Math 123C or Math 134 Description: This course studies the trigonometric functions, including their values, graphs, inverses, and verifying identities. It also includes solving right triangles and others, radian measure and polar equations. Student Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, the successful student will be able to: 1. Examine and interpret the graphs of basic trigonometric functions and their transformation. 2. Apply concepts of trigonometry to solve problems involving trigonometric functions. Textbook and XYZHomework.com: Since most assignments are online, you must purchase a xyzhomework access code. Textbooks purchased online, or at other bookstores, may not include the access code for xyzhomework. For students who prefer a physical textbook, please purchase it through the LAMC bookstore. The textbook is open source from openstax.org/subject/math where you would then select pre-calculus and use chapters 5 thru 8. The access code may be purchased on its own through xyzhomework.com or through the bookstore. Calculators: The use of a calculator is not required for most quizzes and part I of a test/final exam. You are allowed to use a scientific calculator for part II of the test and final exam. No graphing calculator, cell phone, IPOD, nor hand held computers are allowed during in class assessments. Attendance: Attendance is required for all class meetings. A student may be dropped after 3 absences, but it is your responsibility, as a student, to drop the class if you decide to stop attending. 2 If you stop attending the class or wish to drop a class, you must drop the class through the internet. Failure to do so may result in a grade of F in the class. A new state policy in effect as of 2012 limits students to three attempts per course. Receiving a grade or a "W" for a course counts as an attempt, regardless of when the course was taken. Withdrawal by the deadline to avoid a "W" will not count as an attempt. Cheating: Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. If caught, you may be given a zero for that particular exam. The event will be reported to the department chair and the VP of student services for disciplinary action. Student Conduct Students are expected to adhere to all school policies, and to abide by the standards of student conduct as described in the Los Angeles Mission College Catalog on page 34 to 35. Any infringement upon the rights of other students in the class, such as talking or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Exams and Quizzes: You will be given eight quizzes (almost weekly), four exams, and a comprehensive final exam on the dates noted on the time table which is given at the end of the syllabus. There are no makeup quizzes or exams. Two quizzes will be dropped and if your final is higher than the lowest exam score, it will replace the lowest exam score. All exams are given in free response format and all work must be shown to obtain credit. Grading: Final grades will be based on: Final exam 26% 3 exams 54% Assignments 10% on line Quizzes 10% Your grade in the course is determined according to the following scale: A: % B: 80-89% C: 70-79% D: 60-69% F: 59% and below For borderline cases, attendance, completion of assignment, and level of improvement on the final are considered.
