REGISTRATION: To register for Spanish 1 or other Scholé Academy courses visit COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will be a great opportunity for 8 th graders through adults wishing to study Spanish with a seasoned educator. The focus of the course is to present both supplemental instruction to accompany the study of the text and to provide a forum for questions, discussion and practicing Spanish. This course is designed for middle school students through adults who want an introduction to the Spanish language and who wish to get high school language credit. This class builds novice and intermediate skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students learn vocabulary and conversational skills that allow them to greet and introduce themselves to others, describe their family life and daily routines, order and talk about foods, and to navigate a marketplace among other things. Students learn the basics of Spanish grammar including present, past and future tense verb conjugation. They also learn about many different cultures in the Spanish- speaking world. COURSE TEXT: The course text is Descubre 1 (ISBN: ) and is available for purchase at Vista Higher Learning ( The cost is $83.00 for the vtext with Supersite code edition. This is an online version of the book and is the site through which assignments will be completed. Students who like a hard copy can also purchase the student edition or can print off lessons ahead of time from the vtext.

2 CLASS SIZE: The class will be limited to 20 students of any age. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS: Students will be following the sequence of study contained in Descubre: Level 1. Some student work and assessments will be completed in the text and some will also be completed using some online tools and assignments. During online discussion, students will review answers, and practice grammar and conversation. GRADING: Teachers will communicate with students regarding assignment feedback and grading through the free online grading system, LearnBoost. The teacher will provide students with more detailed information and access to the class grade page when the course begins. THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM: We will be using free online virtual classroom software provided by Zoom, one of the leading companies that provides such software. The virtual classroom will provide students with interactive audio, text chat and an interactive whiteboard in which texts, diagrams, video and other media can be displayed and analyzed. We will provide students with a link (via ) that will enable students to join the virtual classroom. Specific information regarding the technology used by Scholé Academy (including required technology) can be found by visiting Students will submit documents by uploading them to an online project site. The location of this online site will be provided once the course begins. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Julie Huber holds a Masters degree in Spanish language and culture from the University of Salamanca, Spain. She has taught beginning through advanced Spanish classes for six years at Issaquah High School in Washington State. Her passion for the Spanish language began in high school and has lead her to study in many countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Perú, Guatemala, and Spain. She hopes to travel abroad regularly with students someday and thinks that experiencing other languages and cultures opens doors, opens minds, and changes lives. She lives in Issaquah, Washington and enjoys reading novels (especially in Spanish!), writing music, traveling and spending time with her husband and 3- year- old daughter. Julie teaches four levels of Spanish through Scholé Academy: Spanish for Children: Primer A, Spanish for Children: Primer B, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2. 2

Students will need to watch the lesson on their own time that week and do a few additional activities in their workbooks. Scheduled holidays include: November (Thanksgiving) December 20 January 9 (Christmas and New Year s) March 30 April 5 (Holy Week/Easter) *Please note the above dates and times are the anticipated class sessions for this course. However, all dates are subject to change as circumstances might dictate (e.g. illness, family emergency). Any classes canceled by the instructor will be made up at an alternate time designated by the instructor. OFFICE HOURS: In addition to scheduled class times, an Office Hours session will be held on Thursdays at 9:00 a.m. During Office Hours students may raise questions, seek assistance, or review class material. 3
