2 Who are these courses for? We are a long-standing, successful provider of Subject Knowledge Enhancement (SKE) courses. These courses are designed for applicants who have been offered, or are hoping to gain, a place on a postgraduate Initial Teacher Training (ITT) course in England. SKE programmes are designed for ITT candidates to gain the depth of knowledge needed to train to teach their chosen subject. The courses will help you identify your individual training needs and top up your subject knowledge in areas that would be difficult to address on your own, such as certain practical elements of chemistry or physics. We will assess and discuss subject knowledge with all candidates at interview and advise them on the most appropriate course. The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) offers full funding for successful applicants and therefore courses are free to participants. The NCTL offers a bursary of 200/week to eligible applicants. 2

3 Am I eligible? To be eligible trainees must: Not be going onto a non-qts undergraduate course; Not already hold qualified teacher status; Have agreement from their ITT provider that they should attend. What can I expect from the course? University of Wolverhampton SKE courses are designed to be an introduction to Initial Teacher Training courses with a focus on the subject knowledge trainees will require to become successful teachers within their subject. All courses are taught by experienced teachers who have expertise both in their subject area and working with trainee teachers. Courses will take place prior to the start of ITT or with some elements being taught alongside the training programme. Please see individual subject pages for further details. Applying for SKE courses You may only apply to attend the SKE course in the subject that you will train to teach on your ITT course. For applicants from an institution other than the University of Wolverhampton, we will need to contact your ITT provider to ensure they are willing to support your application for SKE and to establish their preferred funding option. All courses, and their sessions, will be held at the Walsall Campus of the University of Wolverhampton (see back of booklet), which is easily accessible by car or public transport. Free parking is available. Sessions for all courses usually run between 9am and 4pm. 3

4 8-week (short) course This is a very intensive, 8-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Biology. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. This course is intended for those preparing to teach Biology. Consequently, it also includes elements of Chemistry and Physics suitable to the areas encountered in secondary science teaching. Core dates Thursday 12 th July 2018 Wednesday 5th September 2018 There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 4

5 8-week (short) course This is a very intensive, 8-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Chemistry. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. This course is intended for those preparing to teach Chemistry. Consequently, it also includes elements of Biology and Physics suitable to the areas encountered in secondary science teaching. Core dates Thursday 12 th July 2018 Wednesday 5th September 2018 There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 5

24-week (long) course This is an intensive, 24-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Computing who have limited knowledge of Key Stage 3

6 24-week (long) course This is an intensive, 24-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Computing who have limited knowledge of Key Stage 3 & 4 Computing/IT curriculum knowledge, yet have a subsequent interest within the Computing and IT subject area. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. This course will start with the basic beginnings of subject knowledge on the subject and the current curriculum being taught in Computing in UK Secondary Schools before moving into more advanced knowledge and depth in preparation for their teacher training. Core dates Monday 5 th February Friday 20 th July There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 16-week (medium) course This is an intensive, 16-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Computing who can already demonstrate some Key Stage 3 & 4 Computing/IT curriculum knowledge, and have a subsequent interest or experience within the Computing and IT subject area. Candidates may need to enhance some aspects of the advanced Computing curriculum. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. This course will start with the basic beginnings of subject knowledge on the subject and the current curriculum being taught in Computing in UK Secondary Schools in preparation for their teacher training. Core dates Tuesday 3 rd April Friday 20 th July 2018 There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 6

7 8-week (short) course This is a very intensive, 8-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Computing who need to revisit and/or consolidate Key Stage 3 and 4 Computing/IT curriculum knowledge in UK Secondary schools; or who may need to enhance any areas of learning in the subject which have been introduced or developed since it was last studied. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. This course will upskill subject knowledge on the subject and current curriculum in preparation for their teacher training. Core dates Monday 2 nd July 2018 Friday 24 th August 2018 There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 7

You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. Core dates Monday 2 nd July 2018 Friday 24 th August 2018 There may be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 8

28-week (long) course This is an intensive, 28-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Mathematics who have limited knowledge of Key Stage

9 28-week (long) course This is an intensive, 28-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Mathematics who have limited knowledge of Key Stage 3 & 4 curriculum knowledge, yet have a subsequent interest within the Mathematics subject area. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. Core dates Monday 27 th November 2017 Wednesday 30 th May 2018 There will be no direct teaching for two weeks at Easter and two reading weeks also occur which match most school half-term breaks. All taught sessions will take place at the University s Walsall Campus. There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 9

You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. Core dates Monday 4 th June 2018 Friday 27 th July 2018 Candidates will need to have a minimum of a GCSE in Spanish (or equivalent). There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 8-week (short) French course This is an intensive, 8-week subject knowledge enhancement course for those beginning initial teacher training in Secondary Languages offering French as a second subject. You will cover a range of relevant school based content at key stage 3, 4 and post 16. Core dates Monday 4 th June 2018 Friday 27 th July 2018 Candidates will need to have a minimum of a GCSE in French (or equivalent). There will be elements of distance learning where you are required to study at home. 11

Consequently, it also includes elements of Biology and Chemistry suitable to the areas encountered in secondary science teaching. By public transport: Trains call into Walsall station from Birmingham New Street and stations across the West Midlands region. The Number 51 bus stops at Jesson Road as it travels between Walsall and Birmingham. The 529 is the most direct bus route from Wolverhampton to Walsall.
