1 Blackboard - Importing Questions from Respondus Respondus allows you to import multiple choice, true-false, essay, fill in the blank, matching, and multiple answer questions from a file. The questions must be organized in a format that is acceptable to Respondus and the file must be stored in one of the following formats: plain text (.txt), rich-text (.rtf), MS Word (.doc and.docx), tab/comma delimited (.csv) format. 1. Format questions to import into Respondus Each question must begin with a question number, followed by either a period "." or a parentheses ")". The question wording must follow the question number. (Note: at least one space should be b etween the question numb er and the question wording.) Each answer must begin with a letter followed by a period "." or a parentheses ")". Correct answers can be indicated in two ways. First, you may place an asterisk (*) directly in front of the answer choice (do not put a space between the asterisk and the answer choice). The second option is to place a list of correct answers at the end of the file. The list must begin with the word "Answers:" and must be positioned at the end of the file. (Note: Any text after the answer list will be ignored.) Example: 3) Who determined the exact speed of light? a. Albert Einstein *b. Albert Michelson c. Thomas Edison d. Guglielmo Marconi Once you have all your questions formatted correctly, save your file. Remember Respondus can import.doc,.docx,.rtf (rich text) and.txt (plain text) files. 2 2. Importing the questions into Respondus When you start up Respondus you will see that it is organized according to 5 tabs: Start, Edit, Settings, Preview & Publish, and Retrieval & Reports. 1. While on the Start tab, make sure the Current Personality is set to Blackboard 7.x - 9.x to ensure that Respondus gives you only the options that are compatible with Blackboard. 2. 3 3. Importing exam questions into Respondus 1. Choose the Type of file from the drop down menu. 2. Browse to find the File to upload. 3. Select Create a new document, named: and enter the name of the test in the box. 4. Select Exam. 5. Click on the Preview button. 6. Read the Warnings for missing answers, etc. If you have warnings that need to be fixed in your exam questions, cancel the Import Questions window and fix any errors then restart the process. If there are no errors, continue to next step. 7. Click the Finish button. When the File Saved window pops up, click OK. Blackboard - Importing Questions from Respondus - 3

4 3. Edit Tab On the Edit tab you will see the questions appear in the Question List at the bottom of the window. From here, you can 1. Preview a question by clicking on the blue magnifying glass that is to the right of the question number. 2. You can click on the context menu icon to display a pop-up menu with various operations that can be performed on the individual question. 3. Points can be changed by clicking on the value in the Question List and typing new value or it can be changed in the edit question mode. Blackboard - Importing Questions from Respondus - 4

5 5. Settings Tab Respondus allows you to select settings prior to uploading an exam to Blackboard. This step is entirely optional, you can set these settings once you upload the exam to Blackboard. 6. Preview & Publish Click on the Preview & Publish tab, 1. You can preview the questions and modify them if necessary by clicking on the Preview the File button. When finished, close the preview window. 2. To publish to Blackboard click on the Publish to Blackboard link on the left and then click on the Publish Wizard button. Blackboard - Importing Questions from Respondus - 5

6 7. Publish Wizard 1. Choose Type of Publish (Choose Publish to single course if this exam is for one course). 2. In the drop down menu next to Blackboard Server, choose -add new server-. On the pop-up window, choose Yes, check for preconfigured settings. (Complete these steps the FIRST TIME you use Respondus ONLY. ) 3. Click Next. Blackboard - Importing Questions from Respondus - 6

7 7. Publish Wizard cont'd. 1. Choose Course to publish to: If publishing to one course, choose the course from the drop down menu. If publishing to more than one course, check the box next to each course the exam/survey will be deployed to. 2. Create or Replace Exam/Survey or Pool 3. Additional options for Exam/Survey If you didn't set any settings under the Settings tab, uncheck all the boxes and you can set the settings once you upload the exam to Blackboard. 4. Click Next and the Respondus will start uploading the test to Blackboard. WAIT for the last line in the status window to say Completed successfully, then click Finish.
