Course Description: Students will examine the distribution of wealth, status, political power, and other valued resources by class, race/ethnicity, gender, and other axes of stratification in the United States. Special attention will be centered on cases of intersectional identity and economic disparity. Textbook: This course requires the following text. Dasgupta, Katsuri. (2015). Introducing Social Stratification: The Causes and Consequences of Inequality. Lynne Reinner: Boulder. PREREQUISITES The following is a list of prerequisite courses required in order to attend this class. Be sure to check UTRGV ASSIST for more details. This course is a degree elective. There are no prerequisites for this course. Required Technology: I will conduct regular quizzes, surveys, and attendance exercises over the Pingo digital platform. Attendance: Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes and may be dropped from the course for excessive absences. UTRGV s attendance policy excuses students from attending class if they are participating in officially sponsored university activities, such as athletics; for observance of religious holy days; or for military service. Students should contact the instructor in advance of the excused absence and arrange to make up missed work or examinations. For review of missed lecture materials, be sure to read the class slides. Course Drops: According to UTRGV policy, students may drop any class without penalty earning a grade of DR until the official drop date. Following that date, students must be assigned a letter grade and can no longer drop the class. Students considering dropping the class should be aware of the 3-peat rule and the 6-drop rule so they can recognize how dropped classes may affect their academic success. The 6-drop rule refers to Texas law that dictates that undergraduate students may not drop more than six courses during their undergraduate career. Courses dropped at other Texas public higher education institutions will count toward the six-course drop limit. The 3-peat rule refers to additional fees charged to students who take the same class for the third time. Trigger Warning: The study of Sociology may, at times, include readings, documentaries, audio recordings, sculptures, illustrations, photographs, or diagrams that are explicit and may evoke a strong emotional or visceral reaction. 3 Grading Policies, Assignments, Exams Students of this course are expected to attend all classes, complete all readings, and submit completed assignments in a timely fashion. Late assignments will are deducted 10 points for every day they are late, with grade forfeiture occurring 5 calendar days after the due date. Make-up examinations must be schedule no less than three days in advance of the exam, otherwise your exam grade is forfeited. All Scantron exams utilize GREEN scantron slips. The following assignments and Exams will be used to evaluate your performance in this course: Assignment How many? Total Points Description BlackBoard Quizzes and Reviews (3 points each, with two lowest scores (or absences) dropped) These materials are designed to help you review the week s readings. If you receive a low score on your weekly quizzes, this is an indication that you may need to spend more time working with reading materials. Online Midterm 1 30 (30 Points) Two exams covering material reviewed in-class and in the readings. Multiple choice on BlackBoard. Group Annotation (Book and PEW Center Website) 2 20 You will be asked to work within a group to annotate and create a glossary for a portion of one chapter from the book. In addition, I will help you conduct basic research on the PEW Center website to correlate this annotation to a real-world case study. Your group will present this material on BlackBoard and to the class between weeks 12 and 14. Groups and topics must be set by Week 3 and cannot be changed after week 4. In-class Final 1 30 A Cumulative Final covering material reviewed throughout the semester. Multiple choice, scantron. Attendance 13 Weeks 39 (3 points per week) TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS IN THIS COURSE: 158 Attendance will be taken at each class using the Pingo platform. Login at Your final score will be calculated by adding up the total points you have earned, dividing them by the total possible points, and multiplying by 100 [Score=(X/198)100]. This equation calculates the percentage of points you have earned, with the highest percentage being 100%. Final scores will be assigned according to the values listed in the table below. A 100% to 90% B 89% to 80% C 79% to 70% D 69% to 60% F 59% or below Decimal scores of 0.5 or above will be rounded up to the next whole number, while decimal scores of 0.49 or below will be rounded down. - Page 3 of 6 -
