COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed to assist you in your transition into the University of Florida. First Year Florida will emphasize the development of academic and personal skills that support success in college, as well as familiarize you with campus resources. COURSE RESOURCES All course resources will be posted online using e-learning in Sakai. This can be found at Students will be required to submit assignments and will be able to check their grades through this website. Assignments should be posted on Sakai as a Microsoft Word Document or PDF format by 10:30 AM on the day they are due. COURSE OBJECTIVES First Year Florida educates new students to maximize their learning and development by creating environments which provide opportunities for: Engagement (with UF faculty/staff, upper-class mentor, fellow students) Awareness and respect of diversity Involvement Knowledge of resources Active engagement in one s own learning Healthy lifestyle Understanding of UF expectations This course also connects students to key resources at the University of Florida: a faculty/staff member who is committed to first-year student success; an undergraduate peer leader who is experienced in the challenges of making a successful transition from high school to college; and other first-year students. Because this class only meets one time per week, there is really no such thing as a "freebie" when it comes to absences. If you do miss a class for some reason, it is your responsibility to obtain any material or assignments from a fellow class member. Excused absences include: Required student participation in a University sponsored event: These events will be excused with official documentation from the appropriate faculty or staff member. Documentation should be received PRIOR to the event. Religious Holidays: Religious holidays are always excused; however, please notify the instructors, in writing, within the first two weeks of class so that appropriate accommodations may be made. Medical Emergencies: Medical emergencies are excused with appropriate documentation from a health care provider. Family Emergencies: These emergencies are only excused with written documentation. 2

3 Each unexcused absence from the classroom will result in 25 points deducted from the final grade. Points will also be deducted each time you are late to class. Two late arrivals to class will count as one absence. Out-of-Class Attendance, Participation, and Assignments To supplement class discussions and actively engage you in opportunities at UF, attendance and participation will be required for a handful of out-of-class activities. Excused absences for the following activities follow the same absences guideline as noted above. Late/Incomplete Assignments In order to earn a passing grade in this class, ALL DELIVERABLE ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE SUBMITTED. Late assignments will be accepted at the discretion of the instructor, but points will be deducted. Journey to Leadership October 16, 7:00 p.m. Reitz Union, Rion Ballroom John Bul Dau endured the most extreme hardship during his youth and used it to transform his life and the lives of others in profound ways. Gator First Year Experience Workshop Success Series (50 minutes each) You will need to attend two workshops of your choice on your own time. For a listing of workshops and to register online, visit to secure a spot in the workshop. You must register for the workshop in order to attend. If your plans change and you will no longer attend the workshop, please return to the site to unregister ; this will provide an open seat to someone else. Workshops fill up so sign up early! Your attendance will be documented at the workshop and ed to your professor. If you are more than 5 minutes late, you will not be counted as attended. It is a good idea to get a handout or take a picture of yourself at the workshop for your portfolio. Discussion Board Post Getting to Know You -- Introduce yourself to your instructors and classmates! Tell us where you're from, your major, your hobbies... tell us about your family, your pets, your friends... tell us why you're here in First Year Florida. Anything you feel like sharing, now is your chance! DUE SEPTEMBER 3 ON E-LEARNING Academic Integrity Module (Integrity) To complete the module, log onto You will need your UF ID number to start the module. The module is successfully completed once you score an 80% or higher on the quiz. Once completed, print out the time-stamped certificate and turn it in to your instructor. 4 Resume Draft You will submit a draft of your personal resume for review using the information provided in class. DUE OCTOBER 1 ON E-LEARNING Discussion Board Post Presentation Reactions -- Two reactions will be assigned during the semester. Your discussion board post should be approximately words in length and discuss your thoughts on the presentation and how you will use this information. Post your reaction by no later than 11:00 PM on the Saturday of that week. In addition, you are required to post a response to two (2) of your classmate's discussion board posts. Please be sure to offer thoughtful responses of approximately words in length. Simply saying that you agree with them is not enough! Pose questions, offer suggestions, engage in a meaningful exchange of ideas! Post your two (2) responses no later than 10:30 AM on the following Tuesday. You will complete a follow-up reaction paper about your experience and don t forget to take a picture the day of your project for your photo portfolio!! In the event of an unavoidable conflict, if you are not able to attend our service learning project you have the option to attend with another class on a different day. It is your responsibility to contact the other instructor and receive approval for you to attend with their class. If you are participating in another volunteer experience you cannot use that to double count for FYF. DUE SEPTEMBER 24 ON E-LEARNING Your capstone assignment for this course is your FYF Photo Portfolio details are in the Nist textbook pg This assignment is completely determined upon your completion of other requirements in this course so be sure to plan ahead. There will be a mid-semester portfolio check to monitor your progress ON OCTOBER 8 IN CLASS. Final portfolios will be DUE DECEMBER 3 IN CLASS.
