1 Title: Department: Library Services Reports To: Library Director Date Prepared/Revised: October 10, 2017; Revised 12/17 Purpose, Scope & Dimension of Job: The provides expertise and direction relating to the acquisition, management, and discovery of electronic resources. This position is responsible for keeping abreast of emerging trends in content delivery and pricing models. This position works closely with other librarians on collection development for electronic books and serials to ensure a collection that meets the needs of the curriculum at the college. This position works closely with the Acquisitions Librarian to provide timely payment for all electronic books and serials. The provides recommendations to the Library Director in the acquisition of new database subscriptions and assists in price negotiations with vendors. This position maintains statistics on the use of electronic resources and provides acquisitions reports on a regularly scheduled basis. Additionally, the Electronic Resource Librarian may be asked to serve on internal library committees or work groups, college committees, and statewide work groups and committees. Supervisory Responsibility: None. Essential Duties/Major Accountabilities: A. Electronic Resources Management 1. Assesses, investigates, and recommends new products and services for library use, in support of the library s mission, and in support of curriculum needs at the college 2. Assists in the planning and budgeting for electronic resources; makes recommendations for continuations and cancellations, acquisitions, and standing orders 3. Provides for the development and maintenance of the library s electronic resources 4. Promotes discovery of resources through the maintenance of library systems, such as proxy server, discovery tool, OPAC, etc. 5. Provides troubleshooting and technical support for electronic resources access issues 6. Serves as a liaison to vendors; communicate regarding archives, site licenses, and invoices, etc. 7. Maintains, assesses, and analyzes electronic resources usage statistics; provide other statistics such as cost-per-use information and overlap analysis reports as needed 8. Develop and maintain licensing policies and workflows 9. Develop and maintain a knowledge base for electronic resources 10. Creates and maintains procedures and training materials related to electronic resources use for library staff and patrons Page 1 of 5
2 11. Trains and advises staff, faculty and students regarding the use of the library s electronic resources B. Collection Development 1. Participates as a member of the Collection Development Team in selecting appropriate resources for use by staff, students, and faculty at the college 2. Uses appropriate review sources to select electronic books and serials for the library collection 3. Follows the Collection Development guidelines when recommending items for purchase 4. Works closely with the Acquisitions Librarian regarding the budget for electronic books and serials; ensures timely payment of invoices 5. Provides assistance with cataloging of electronic books and serials 6. Offers directions and seeks input from librarians regarding purchases of electronic books and serials and other electronic materials C. Web Services 1. Works with Mott's web team to provide content and guidance on the library website design; updates the content and design of the library website to promote best practice of usability and design 2. Oversees the development and management of LibGuides, LibAnswers, and LibChat; gathers monthly usage statistics 3. Monitors the library s electronic presence on the internet and troubleshoots any issues D. Reference Services 1. Provide assistance at the reference desk to staff, students, and faculty 2. Provide assistance on virtual reference services via chat, text, and to staff, students, and faculty E. Other Responsibilities 1. Attends workshops, continuing education programs, library conferences, and other professional development opportunities related to the position or academic libraries or higher education 2. Serves on internal library work groups or committees, college committees, or statewide committees as it may pertain to the position or to the library or college 3. Models behavior that upholds the MCC Commitments for Employee and Student Success Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 1. Master s Degree in Library and Information Science (or the equivalent) from an ALA accredited institution 2. Minimum of three years of experience working in a library 3. Experience working with an electronic resource management system 4. Experience in applying the principles and practices related to electronic resources and electronic collections 5. Knowledge of electronic resource licensing and the legal framework in which it takes place 6. Knowledge of and experience working with metadata particularly in the areas of cataloging, indexing, and classification (descriptive metadata) 7. Awareness of emerging practices related to RDA/FRBR 8. Understanding of records management necessary for tracking electronic purchases, subscriptions, access, maintenance, and licenses 9. Experience providing user training or instruction 10. Experience providing direct customer service in a library setting 11. Ability to troubleshoot computer hardware and software 12. Proficiency with an integrated library system (Koha preferred, but not required) 13. Experience using MS Word and Excel 14. Able to work on multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and accomplish goals with little supervision 15. Good oral and written communication skills 16. Ability to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and public in a courteous and professional manner. Demonstrated understanding of and sensitivity to individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Ability to appreciate differences and be respectful of those different from them. 17. Good problem solving skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with a variety of issues and situations Additional Preferred Qualifications: 1. Three years working with electronic resource management to include vendor negotiations 2. Computer programming languages such as SQL 3. Knowledge of integrated library system (ILS) acquisition module functions 4. Ability to create a robust records management system 5. Experience in an academic library 6. 4 Physical Requirements: With or without accommodation, the employee in this position must be able to move about the entire library building and assist library patrons. The employee must be able to operate and constantly use a personal computer, communicate with others in person and via telephone, and must be able to stand, remain stationary and move actively for long periods of time. The employee must be able to climb or reach overhead and handle and move heavy volumes, fully loaded book trucks, and computer equipment. The person must be able to write and interpret reports and correspondence. Hours/Schedule: Typical work week is Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm. However, there may be evenings and weekends required occasionally to meet the needs of the library and the college. Some travel could be required for meetings and conferences. Page 4 of 5
