Course Catalog Description Course covers preparation and analysis of financial information using generally accepted accounting principles. Content includes financial statement fundamentals, cash, receivables, inventory, payables, long-term assets, long-term debt, stockholders equity, cash flow statements, internal controls, and financial statement analysis. Course incorporates computer component. Prior computer experience not required. IV. Multiple Journals e. Bank Reconciliations f. Bad Debts g. Inventories h. Fixed Assets i. Payroll j. Corporations k. Stockholders Equity l. Long-term Liabilities and Bonds m. Investment in Stocks n. Statement of Cash Flows V. Academic Integrity Students and employees at Oakton Community College are required to demonstrate academic integrity and follow Code of Academic Conduct. There are serious consequences to violations of the academic integrity policy. policies and procedures provide students a fair hearing if a complaint is made against you. If you are found to have violated the policy, the minimum penalty is failure on the assignment and, a disciplinary record will be established and kept on file in the office of the Vice President for Student Affairs for a period of 3 years. Details of the Code of Academic Conduct can be found in the Student Handbook. VI. Outline of Topics See detailed on Pages 5 and 6. VII. Methods of Instruction Each chapter will have some of the following teaching tools: Online Power Point lectures Practice quizzes Practice homework using Wiley Plus (an online homework manager) Graded homework using Wiley Plus Graded quizzes via WEBCT Three problem based examinations Departmental Assessment Exam NOTE: The examinations are proctored and must be completed in one of the Oakton testing centers (Des Plaines or Skokie Campus) Homework is completed in WileyPlus and chapter quizzes in WEBCT There are specific due dates posted in WileyPlus and WEBCT Calendar for quizzes, homework and exams. Also refer to the course schedule in WEBCT for specific due dates There is an automatic 30% reduction in assignment grade for any WileyPlus homework that is completed after the due date Exams submitted after the deadline will be reduced by 15% of the maximum points Quizzes and Departmental Assessment Exam cannot be completed after the due date VIII. Instructional Materials The Oakton bookstore sells the soft bound textbook bundled with the WileyPLUS access code at a reduced cost over purchasing the text and access code separately. A WileyPlus access code should be purchased along with your textbook. Using the URL above, students should log-in to their WileyPlus accounts and complete the homework problems assigned. It is recommended that students attempt the ungraded practice problems as well as the graded assignments. If you did not purchase a new book from the Oakton bookstore, you can purchase a Standard WileyPLUS registration code at: WebCT We will be using WebCT along with the textbook. You can access WebCT from your home through your Internet service provider. X. The exams are mandatory. The exams must be taken on campus at either the Des Plaines Center or the Skokie Center. You will have a 7 day window to take the exam. Centers are open Monday through Saturday. You will need to show an ID at the time of the exam. Exams completed after the deadline will be reduced by 15% of the maximum points. Wiley Plus Graded Homework and WEBCT Quizzes (up to 260 points): WileyPlus is the interactive online homework tool created by the textbook publisher where you can practice exercises and receive immediate feedback. There will also be some graded homework problems on Wiley Plus throughout the semester. You are allowed two attempts on Syllabus Page 3

4 each graded homework assignment. The WileyPlus system will grade the homework upon each submission It is not necessary to forward any hard copies to the instructor. You must have access to WileyPlus. If you purchased your textbook for the Oakton bookstore, the access code comes with your textbook. To register for Wiley Plus: 1. Go to 2. Click Register and use the access code that came with the book. 3. If you have purchased a textbook without an access code, go ahead with the registration and when asked for the code, you can purchase one online for around $75. In addition to WileyPlus, there are graded multiple choice quizzes, one for each chapter, in WEBCT. Please note that these quizzes are timed and you will only have one attempt to respond to the question. Practice quizzes will be provided that are not time and allow you unlimited access. Accounting Cycle Project (20 points): There is a comprehensive bookkeeping project in the first part of the course. This project is worth 20 points and it is mandatory. The project will be completed in WileyPlus. Departmental Assessment Exam (20 points): All students enrolled in ACC153 are required to complete a mandatory standardized 20 question multiple choice exam covering their general understanding of the accounting concepts covered in chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the course. The exam is 30 minutes, proctored and must be completed in Center. WebCT: All course communication will take place in WebCT. In addition to various other features, WEBCT has its own system. WEBCT is the best way to contact the instructor with questions. To login into WebCT: 1. Go to online.oakton.edu 2. Use your regular Oakton login ID and password. 3. If you don t know your login ID, you can find it at XI. Other Course Information 1. Tutoring Tutoring is available through The Learning Center in Room 2400 at Des Plaines campus, and Room A-135 at Skokie campus. When available, the instructor will provide you with a listing of available tutors who specialize in accounting subjects. 2. ASSIST If you have a documented learning, psychological, or physical disability, you may be entitled to reasonable academic accommodations or services.
