Engineers are in high demand in Australia and overseas. The fast-growing, high-technology fields of telecommunications, computing and electronics need engineers to drive the future of their products and services. Many of our graduates are offered employment before they graduate. INDUsTRy partnerships AND INTERNsHIps The Department of Electronic Engineering has developed an Industry Partnerships Program with major companies engaged in areas such as telecommunications, image processing, medical devices and software engineering. These companies such as Optus and Cochlear are located close to Macquarie University. Through the Industry Partnerships Program, undergraduate students are eligible to undertake a 16-week industry-based internship as part of their degree in the final semester of study. This provides valuable industry experience whilst also satisfying professional accreditation requirements. Another aspect of the Industry Partnerships Program is the partnership between industry and Macquarie University to work together to address the engineering skills shortage. ACHIEvEmENTs The engineering program at Macquarie University is built on a long-standing record of excellence in teaching and research, and engagement with local industry. One example of the achievements of the program is the innovative design of integrated circuits for wireless communication by Adjunct Professors David Skellern and Neil Weste. The success of this design resulted in the subsequent commercialisation of their wireless LAN technology company, which was acquired by Cisco Systems in Both David and Neil are still connected to Macquarie University. David is currently the Chair of the Department of Electronic Engineering s Industry Advisory Committee, and Neil Weste continues to undertake wireless systems research at the University. scholarships Macquarie University provides a variety of scholarships.
