The Fashion Retail Academy is the first of 12 Skills Academies that will be developed across a variety of sectors to train and prepare the next generation of people for the work place. The Academy is a ground breaking industry led public-private partnership, teaching and developing the fundamental skills required for the fashion retail industry. The Fashion Retail Academy is supported by industry and sponsored by major retailers including The Arcadia Group, Marks and Spencer, Next, Tesco and The Home Retail Group. This is a unique combination of retail business and fashion education, aiming to introduce students to all of the vocational skills needed for the challenging and fast paced world of fashion retail. Students undertake work placements throughout the academic year and are positively encouraged to work part-time in the fashion retail sector. The Academy s state of the art technology is complimented by the vast resources available within our retail partners organisations to support and encourage learning and creativity. The learning process is a unique collaboration between academy and industry staff through work placements and industry master classes. 2 Facilities & resources Classrooms, Seminar Rooms & Tutorial Rooms The Fashion Retail Academy has a range of classrooms fitted with interactive whiteboards, seminar and tutorial rooms. The Fashion Retail Academy has 45,000 sq ft of teaching space over 6 floors, fitted out with state of the art teaching and learning facilities. These can be seen in the fully equipped lecture theatre, classrooms, IT Suites, student common rooms and Learning Resource Centre. Conference and Lecture Facilities The Fashion Retail Academy has a state of the art lecture theatre including a media wall and catwalk facility, with break out rooms for group work and seminars. Learning Resource Centre The Learning Resource Centre has an extensive stock of specialised books, DVDs and periodicals, including a quiet study area, reprographics and presentation area and space for group work. The wireless Internet access and PCs enable students to access the Library catalogue and a range of electronic resources and databases. The Learning Resource Centre also has four fully equipped IT suites and an audiovisual room. All IT suites have a range of software including specialist packages for visual merchandising and range planning Social Spaces The Cafe provides students with a choice of meals and snacks in a sophisticated café environment with plasma screens and outdoor space. The student common room is a relaxing area to meet friends and socialise with MTV, games table, Internet access and video jukebox. Virtual and Electronic Resources Moodle is a virtual learning environment (VLE) that enables students to access course materials wherever they are. 3 Courses Level: Further Education Study Mode: Full Time Duration: 1 year Level 2 Diploma in Fashion Retail Duration: 1 year Level 3 Diploma in Fashion Retail Course Overview The curriculum has been developed for The Fashion Retail Academy and is fully accredited by ABC Awards. Both Diplomas offer rewarding programmes, where hard work and dedication are professionally recognised. In addition to classroom study, students will undertake work placements in each of the year-long courses. Students will learn about all aspects of fashion retail including store management, customer service, visual merchandising, buying, technology, IT and marketing through a blend of work based learning including: Inspirational master classes and lectures by highly regarded industry leaders, including Sir Philip Green (Arcadia) & Stuart Rose (M&S). In-store experience. Students are expected to study Monday to Friday. High levels of punctuality and attendance will be expected. Hours of work may vary during the work placements and students will receive advanced notice of times and locations. Approaches to work placements differ depending on which course you study, form a vital part of the learning process. They are grouped in appropriate blocks of time, according to the particular units of study and taking into account retail trading patterns. 5 Student Support The student support area provides a confidential environment for one to one advice sessions on careers, finance, disability support, etc. Through an arrangement with the University of the Arts, students have access to a full range of experts in student support and guidance. Study Support Students have access to specialist support to help them with their academic work. This can range from advice on how to structure a report to time management and project management. Industrial Liaison Officer The Fashion Retail Academy employs a specialist industrial liaison officer to organise and monitor the students work placements. Special Needs If you have a learning difficulty or disability we offer the support and facilities to help you reach your full potential. Accommodation We do not have our own halls of residence and are unable to provide accommodation. We will however endeavour to help students by putting them in touch with accommodation agencies and putting students in touch with other students if they are looking for someone to share with. Students who have to relocate to London to take up their course may be entitled to financial support via the Residential Pilot Scheme. For further details visit: Fees & funding If you are under 19 on 31st August in the academic year you begin your course and are a home or EU student you do not pay any fees for a course you start in September. A Home student usually means a British National or someone with indefinite or exceptional leave to remain, who has been living in the UK for at least 3 years prior to the beginning of their course (excluding any temporary absences). If you are 19 or over on 31st August in the academic year that you begin your course you must pay tuition fees.
