56 Pre-Course Assessment The Pre-Course Assessment helps instructors and students identify the level of student understanding. It also enables students to practice essential prerequisite skills. The Pre-Course Assessment includes: Part 1 Pre-Test Questions Part 2 Improvement Plan MindTap s Pre-Course Assessment lets students diagnose and improve foundational skills on their own, so that instructors can spend time on current class topics. Pre-Test Questions The Pre-Test consists of a group of questions designed to identify student knowledge of prerequisite skills. Topic concepts do not display with the question to test student knowledge without reference to the particular concept. For example, in the course PreCalculus by Stewart, when the instructor creates a Pre-Course Assessment they can select from 9 concepts: Real Numbers and Their Properties Exponents and Radicals Combining Algebraic Expressions Factoring Algebraic Expressions Solving Equations and Inequalities Rational Expressions and Equations The Coordinate Plane and Graphs of Equations Complex Numbers Lines For each concept selected, 5 questions will display in the pre-test. Default includes all 9 concepts for a pre-test of 45 questions. Many of the questions are multi-part, so a 45 question pre-test may actually require 55+ responses. NOTE: For other course titles, the concept topics will be different matching prerequisites for the particular course. IMPORTANT: The student must finish the initial Pre-Test questions with sufficient time remaining before the due date/time so that they can take advantage of the study benefits in the Improvement Plan. The default time is 11:00 pm on the due date, so students should finish the Pre-Test by 8:00 pm to use the remaining time on the Improvement Plan and Targeted exercises. MindTap for Math, Statistics and Physics Instructor Guide Page 56 Cengage Learning

57 Improvement Plan To use the Improvement Plan, students begin with the Pre-Test Summary. The summary shows students how they performed on the assessment with a graph and score for each concept. Users can click on an assessment item and the question displays with the answer that was given. Clicking the Improve Score button brings students to a choice screen for viewing help topics in different resources (readings, videos, questions). Students can try new questions to improve their knowledge. Review material takes the following forms: Tutoring Materials readings, videos Practice Questions to improve understanding Quiz Yourself Questions to improve score Review questions are categorized by concept. The student enters a concept then chooses: help, practice or quiz. Inserting the Pre-Course Assessment As instructor, you insert the Pre-Course Assessment into your course by the following procedure: Step 1 From the Learning Path, open the Week View and click on the desired week. Click the Add to Week button. Result: A date selection box displays. 2 Select the Due Date for your Pre-Course Assessment. NOTE: The Available Date is set on a different screen. Initially, all concepts are included shown as checked ( ). Select the concepts to exclude click the checkbox to uncheck it which removes the concept. NOTE: Default is 5 questions per concept, so if all 9 concepts are checked, then the Pre-Test will contain 45 questions. Many of these questions are multi-part, so students may actually supply answers for 60 questions. NOTE: By default, all prerequisite topics are included in the Pre-Test. MindTap for Math, Statistics and Physics Instructor Guide Page 59 MindTap version /29/2016

60 Step 7 Click NEXT (Assign to Course): Result: The Assign To Course dialog box displays. 8 Edit the following fields: Description Available Date (day students can start Pre-Course Assessment) NOTE: The Due Date is already pre-populated in this screen. 70 Gradebook and the Progress App The gradebook is part of the Progress App. Instructors edit grades, view analytics of class performance, setup categories for scoring, and place assignments into different categories. Instructors can import and export grades from the Progress App to a spreadsheet program, such as Microsoft Excel. Grades The Progress App contains the gradebook that maintains student scores for homeworks, quizzes and exams. Scoring is viewed and accessed under student name showing information on performance: The Gradebook contains scoring categories, weighted scoring, and analytics. An overall performance graph shows current student progress. Use the Progress App to Create Gradebook Categories, Insert Assessments into Categories, and Use Categories to Weigh Assignment Types.
